The most Flames kind of season for them would be for Huberdeau to have a resurgence season, Kadri continues to be a bright spot, young players like Cornato, Zary take a big step forward. Kuzmenko shooting at 25%+ again potting another 35 goals 70+ point season. The Flames unexpectedly make the playoffs like they did in 2015. They try to short-cut the rebuild again at the 2025 draft by trading some draft capitals for NHLers just for them to fall off the map again in the 2025-26 season.

As a Flames fan I have been really impressed with Conroy and what he has managed to do since taking over. These are my thoughts on what he has done. 1) Look at what he was able to get for the expiring contracts that were all going to demand a premium to retain or were going to walk for nothing. 2) We had a 6 picks in the first 3 rounds of this draft, including 2 in the first round. 3) With a new stadium about to begin construction after the Stampede wraps up this is the best time to retool and make the team competitive for the first season in the new building. 4) In his first press conference he said that he wants to give players in the system a chance to prove that they deserve a spot on the main roster. The wranglers have been one of the best teams in the AHL the past two seasons its about time we see what they can do in the NHL. 5) We have over 20 million in cap space!!! 6) We have players that want to be here, and want to see the team succeed, including Nazem Kadri I am optimistic that we won't be bottom dwellers this season. Yes the Team that we had back in 21-22 is drastically different than the one that we have now, but the doom and gloom from the "Fans" is getting old really fast. Conroy was an American player that played in Calgary retired and is now running the team. He could've left Calgary in the dust after retiring but he considers the city home and wants to see the team succeed. Yes we aren't likely going to be competitive for a couple seasons but the future is looking bright.

Good post. They might not win a whole lot this coming season but the old core has been cast out and if they build this team the right way, through some good drafts like this past one, they can start to turn it around in a few years. Getting the number one center through the draft will be key obviously.

@@billwhite93 completely agree, Conroy has done a phenomenal job so far. Handled all of the UFA business he said he was going to handle, had a phenomenal first draft that he had more than 5 minutes to prepare for, and have made some smart signings so far in free agency. Not to mention that this team somehow has the most cap space in the entire league while still having Huberdeau's contract on it. He has done nothing but impress so far.

That the Flames, as of the date on which the video was released, had had over US$20 million a cap space didn’t surprise me all that much considering how badly they had ended last regular season and there’d appeared to have been no easy out for the coming season for them.

Flames fan here with a thorough take on the current state of the Flames and where most fans heads are currently at with this franchise: We realize it's going to be a very rough next couple of seasons. But I can safely say that the vast majority of Flames fans are looking forward to it. We have never drafted in the top-3 in franchise history and the time has come for us to have a real opportunity to do that the next couple of seasons. In the past, ownership made it a cardinal sin to use the "R" word (rebuild) and it has held us back for so long. Now, whether they want to admit it or not, they are doing a rebuild or heavy retool. So far, I'm pretty content with the way Conroy has done things. He seems to have the right principles in place: 1) don't let assets walk for nothing 2) give young players a proper chance to show their stuff (last year we had Zary, Pospisil, Coronato, Solovyov, Wolf, Pelletier, etc) 3) create a positive culture to encourage people to want to be in Calgary. Even with the prospect camp this summer you saw that he was joking around with the players. He doesn't want the image of being the big, scary boss upstairs. 4) not signing any big money, long term contracts at this stage. Sharangovich at 5.75mil for the next 5 years is the biggest contract he's signed so far and it is pretty fair for a young 30 goal scorer. CAP SITUATION: around 20mil in cap space INCLUDING Huberdeau's contract is an amazing situation to be in. We can easily broker deals or retain in trades to bring in more draft capital. Conroy has shown that he is not going to mindlessly spend that cap. Mantha at 3.5mil for 1 year and lomberg 2mil for 2 years are low risk signings and is a refreshing change of pace from pointless signings of the past like Brouwer, Neal etc. PROSPECTS: What was rather bleak just a couple of seasons ago, has turned into a top-10 prospect pool in the league. While I agree that determining the success of a draft is foolish because we won't know for a few years, I think Conroy's APPROACH to the 2024 draft was a major win. Acquiring high skill is the most difficult thing to do for a team and the draft is the best way to do it. Guys like Parekh, Basha and Misa are huge pickups. The team already has 4 NHL level prospects that have seen time with the team and will only get better (Zary, Coronato, Pelletier, Wolf), so there is no shortage of talent. The offensive defensemen in the pipeline are also plentiful with Poirier, Brzustewicz, Morin, and the aforementioned Parekh. I like the sneaky prospect pickups they did in trades as well. Grushnikov may be the perfect d partner to any of the offensive guys. The 3rd we got from NJ for Toffoli became Aydar Suniev who I think is going to light up the AHL and if he can increase his footspeed, he can top out as a top 6 NHLer. UPCOMING DRAFTS: 4 first round picks, 3 second round picks in the next two drafts. And that doesn't include any more they can receive for trading any pieces like Andersson, Backlund or Coleman. That trade stipulation in the Monahan trade to Montreal still makes my head hurt and I don't fully understand it. All I know is it's in the Flames best interest to finish in the bottom 10 this year which I think they will. Regardless, we have Vegas's UNPROTECTED 2026 1st pick which may be higher than people think because they are lacking some serious scoring in their top-6. COACHING STAFF: Huska is the ideal coach for this transitional stage. Plenty of coaching experience in the AHL and NHL so he can continue to help transition young players into the line up while still allowing our veterans to lead the way. No need to make a change in this position for at least a couple of years. So with all that being said, how long is this rebuild going to take? No idea, but I think there is a chance for this to be a 3-5 year rebuild as opposed to a 7-8 year rebuild. Dream with me Flames fans: The year is 2026. The Flames proudly select with the 1st overall pick, Gavin McKenna. One year later, he is on hand along with new free agent signing Cale Makar at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new arena. Parekh is coming off a phenomenal year in the AHL where he leads all defensemen in scoring and is ready to make the jump full time. Captain Nazem Kadri is centering the 3rd line and is showing these young superstars how to be good pros. The Wranglers continue to get better with the inclusions of Honzek, Misa, Gridin, 2025 first round draft picks, 2026 first round draft pick (from Vegas) and some of the 2nd/3rd rounders. Flames return to the playoffs over the next few seasons and continue to make signings with trades until they become legit cup contenders. After years of having everyone wanting to leave, I can't think of a team more deserving of a positive turn around and good karma.

Hmmm, the way I see our draft picks along with our developmental players, we're probably around 4ish years from being able to contend with the top. I think that a lot of our uneven play can be attributed to the moving of many players throughout the season. It's difficult to have a cohesive team structure when a good chunk of the guys are gone by the end of it. With a fresh system and likely fewer major players being moved, I'm optimistic that our overall team structure will be better. In terms of how we'll do, I think probably bottom 10, but I don't think we're bad enough to hit bottom 5. Although we don't have Markstrom, we have a lot of solid young players coming up the ranks. One of our biggest strengths last year was that we had so much support in scoring. It definitely hurt not having a top scorer, but we had so much diversified production that we weren't handicapped if one scorer was playing a bit worse.

Shannon The Hockey Guy mentions, starting at the 5:30 mark of the video, salary retention slots the Flames have filled. The only one they have filled is that of Jacob Markstrom, US$1.875 million of whose per-season cap hit they agreed to, for this season and the next one, retain. That leaves two retention slots left they can use for this season, and of players who they have under contract for this season, if the per-season cap hit is at least US$1 million each, I count, of those eligible to walk into unrestricted free agency, come July: - 2025: Kuzmenko, Mantha, Rooney and Vladar - 2026: Backlund, Lomberg, Andersson, Bean and Miromanov - 2027: Coleman

I really thought last season would have gone better with all the ufa's coming into contract years. This year feeling optimistic. Still feel like battling for 8th. Would be nice to back into Kylington contract at this point. Flames need better D after losing Tanev and Hannifin. Biggest loss this summer though is our play by play broadcaster Rick Ball who got a well deserved promotion to a front seat to call Chicago games for the Bedard era.

A 2-3 year rebuild sounds promising but the Huberdeau and Kadri contracts will be problematic in that timeframe. They will have both declined in production by then but their contracts will have enough years left to make for very punitive buyouts. We'll see if they go the same route that Minnesota took with Parise and Suter a few years ago.

I love heading into a new season with low expectations. For me this is a win win, we bear and grin it through a really rough season and get a top 6 in the next draft. Or, Wolf/Vladar steal games (I like the tandem, both 1b aiming for a 1a job who can play-off/encourage each other), defense plays better than they look on paper and the top 6 produce enough. Stranger things have happened. I'm ok with either scenario. But if not making the playoffs sure hope the Flames don't land in those 9/10/11 spots

As a Flames fan I feel the final piece signifying a full rebuild was the Markstrom trade. If they wanted to compete I feel they’d have gotten rid of Vladar to free up room for wolf rather than move Markstrom. Either way, it’s in our best interest to finish in the bottom 10. If we don’t, we give our first round pick to Montreal.

At a certain point, goalie height doesn't matter, unless they're laying down on the ice. Athleticism, positional play, reflexes, anticipation, and the will to compete matter a lot more than size. Otherwise, Fedotov wins the Vezina next season. Richard "King" Brodeur dragged the Canucks to the Finals vs the Islanders and he was only 5'7". The Islanders goalie he faced, Billy "Killer" Smith was only 5'10", but I'm pretty sure nobody called him short to his face. Many of the best NHL goalies have been 6' or shorter

looks like a huge rebuild and years to complete unless they find a way to move Huberderp. 10 million for 30 point guy in 2027 is going to be really really bad compared to the 10 million for 50 points this year. He is getting worse every year. Weegar at 6 and change million for a fifth round draft pick. That's also pretty rough. He is hanging in there now, but 2031 is a long way away to keep up 6 millions worth of a production. That is one big contract to buy out, or trade away for Huber. I don't think any team is going to want that with the way he is playing. Maybe at 5 million its worth a gamble that he can find his game again somewhere else. Honestly the Flames giving him that contract made no sense if they weren't going to keep the team together and pay everyone else to stay. I guess they didn't plan on blowing it up at the time?
@star-iv
@star-iv 22 күн бұрын
If Huberdeau was magically off the Flames, they'd be 10 million under the cap. Him being on the team doesnt negatively affect their current plan: Finish low in the standings to secure high draft picks. Even when rookies come onto the team in the coming years, they will be on cheap ELC contracts. The Flames might need cap space in 5 years, when there is 2 years left on gis deal. His contract will still be brutal, but it will be easier to move.

Let the rebuild continue, but hopefully we don't trade away all the veterans. We still need the leadership to teach the young guys. The Flames have never been lucky enough to win the draft lottery, so I really don't expect that to change. Hopefully we manage to hit on some of our picks (I'm currently cautiously optimistic with Zayne Parekh). I'm still holding out hope that in 2025-26 Vegas will be garbage (so banged up, they can't get out of the basement even with LTIR), and Calgary gets it's first draft lottery win (100% it will be Vegas's pick). Hopefully with our own pick being a top 5. In my little dream world, the Flames get Gavin McKenna with the first overall, followed up by Joe Iginla (with 4th or 5th overall).

They should do a full rebuild from the ground up. You could easily move the kadri and weegar contracts for good returns Pick up marner and a 1st from Toronto, would probably cost weegar and a 2 way forward. Ship out marner with 50% retained at the deadline for another 1st+, probably going to Winnipeg in exchange for ehlers and a first. Coleman will be a good value for western teams (looking at Dallas, LA, and Colorado) likely fetches a mid prospect like Christian Kyrou. Anaheim is stockpiling top 2 defenders like it is going out of style so could work out something like a forward for a dman. Up another 2 first rounders and a couple prospects while still having some veterans around for support. 4 years to be relevant if they do it right, a lot longer if not.

Is a ground-up rebuild like Buffalo, Ottawa or Columbus? Young players need to learn how to play and win in the NHL and be surrounded by good, veteran teammates. They should strive to finish bottom 5, but not tank to the detriment of player development in the NHL

@christopherjohnson9176 22 күн бұрын
@@star-iv You'll still have Huberdeau, Mantha, Bean, Andersson, and Miromanov who all have had reasonably successful careers and played for teams who made deep playoff runs/won cups. You're giving up the present to have a season similar to a columbus season or two, then you're running a strong young roster with plenty of depth. Parekh was a HUGE pickup for the flames and Gridin should be able to fill a middle six role in a couple years. Moving the players listed in the original comment gives A) the cap space to be somewhere teams dump contracts (yes they have $20M now, why not have more?) and B) play time for the young guys to get developing at the NHL level sooner rather than later. New Jersey did similar with their roster 6 years ago and look at them now, getting jinxed by THG but otherwise a competitively viable team. Only difference Calgary should make is contacting Detroit for a goalie, or work out a deal for Askarov.
@star-iv
@star-iv 21 күн бұрын
@@christopherjohnson9176 I want to see veterans that are going to play hard every game. Coleman, Kadri, Weegar, Backlund and Andersson are going to do this. I don't see Huberdeau as this type of player. I don't know much about Mantha's game, but he is new with the organization. I don't consider Bean or Miromanov to be veterans. Sure, they're in their mid to late 20's, but how long have they actually consistently played in the NHL? Zary has more NHL GP than Miromanov and Sharangovich has more played 90 more games than Bean. I don't understand how the best two Calgary players could net Marner and a first. Calgary received 2 roster players and a first round pick for just Tkachuk. There's no way Toronto would ever make this deal. The Flames cannot shed any more cap space or they'll be under the cap floor. They may have to pick up an LTIR contract. I do think they should trade their pending UFAs Kuzmenko and Andersson at the deadline. I don't like how NJ built their roster in 20-21: They had 11 players 24 and under and their only vets were Tatar, Hamilton, Subban and Vesey. The youngsters nearly outnumber the vets 3-1. They also neglected their goaltending, which was a large factor why they missed the playoffs in 23-24. And they already had 2 first overall picks before predictably doing terrible in 20-21 and drafting Nemec at 2. Looking over their rebuild, they iced very young teams with too few vets IMO. Do they finish higher than Dallas in the standings this year? I'm not sure Calgary has a great goaltending prospect in Wolf. With Markstrom traded, Wolf will have plenty of opportunities to play this year. It'll take some time for Wolf to adjust the the NHL, and between the weak defense and centre positions, Calgary should finish in the bottom 10. Being terrible and getting #1 and #2 overall does seem to work, but I don't want to see a decade of darkness or whatever is happening in Buffalo and Columbus. And not to mention, #1 and #2 are not even guaranteed: teams need to have a bad season and then get lucky with the lottery.

I don't think Conroy has any intention of completely tanking the team. The only thing he's said publicly is that he wants this team to be competitive and have a chance to win every night. I think this is the right mentality to have. You want a team that wants to win, because it will be better when you come out of this if you've built the right culture around the team as well. The problem with tanking is the losing mindset that often comes with it. Conroy wants to avoid that, and has picked up players who want to be here and want to compete. He's taking the right approach to this.
