I tried pointing shit like this out back in Gamergate a decade ago. There's dude using these 'wars' the way thieves take advantage of civil protests. You can't smell shit in a methane factory. I want to preface this by saying I don't consider myself Left or Right or none of that nonsense ,I hate both sides. With that said the one thing I notice about the right is that as long as you parrot what they want they won't really care about someone character , where as the left will eat their own. There is some context to what Salim was saying earlier that kicked off the misunderstandings here. Notably the claim that the reason people didn't buy/support Tales of Kenzera was because of racism. In perpetuity, doesn't this line of thinking sound familiar? Of course that's going to get mocked. Like Mike, I also felt it was taken too far because unlike other woke garbage, Tales of Kenzera looked like a pretty cool take on African culture that featured platforming gameplay that looked promising. Other people felt the same way in that maybe there is misunderstanding here that affords a second look. Had this been say....a specific SBI co-founder, they would not be afforded any grace whatsoever and we wouldn't all be here talking about a podcast reaction.

This is precisely what I can't stand (or one of the things I can't stand) about online discourse, particularly around ideological/political topics. Fair nuanced points get muddled, weakened, or outright ignored by the radical and factually bigoted nonsense on both sides, which the fools on the other side use to generalize their entire perceived opposition. It's frustrating, especially when they pretend to that their views share the same root as people with sensible takes just because they happen to be on the same side, and too many people can't tell the difference. It's insane that no one else on this podcast (which I've never heard of, not that that matters) calls this bile out for what it is, if only because it's going to poison the entire discussion by not filtering that kind of garbage out. Just proves that there's ignorance and cowardice on both sides of this (or any, tbh) ideological controversy. It's the internet, after all, I guess. Isn't it wonderful that we can be in an independent/center space where you can assess the good and bad of an argument without compromising your integrity to save face for whatever "team" you're on? Glad channels like these exist. I think the adulting stopped back in 2020, when it because very apparent that the criticism and constructive dialogue goes nowhere. I used to be on the fence too. Then they killed off Joel in the most pitiful way possible to shoehorn in a token trans and turned a fun game into a torture simulator. I saw as far back as Battlefield 1 in 2014 where this could have gone and I was rather passive about it, same as you. I don't dismiss your position because it's good to be more level-headed about it. But like me, at some point ,they will come for a game you cherish and they will corrupt it and weaponize it for their political propaganda. That will be the moment and all those experience will snap into place at once: this is why there is such a massive pushback that is called Gamergate 2. People are getting fed up with the direction gaming has gotten and unfortunately, you have original IPs that try to do what they can, but because they signed on with SBI, it was just bad timing for that game. And this will likely continue for some time now. The post-woke era is here and Tales of Kenzera is going to become one more thing to forget about because they decided to sign up with Sweet Baby Inc. and the cancer that is DEI consulting.

As someone who has started watching Smash JT more as of recently, I'm a bit taken back at the wording of the other content creators especially Ryan. I hope he takes the time to reflect on who he associates with and remembers this fight is against the bad decisions taking place in the gaming industry, it has nothing to do with the color of someone's skin. I do not think DEI in itself is the problem, it's the forced DEI that sacrifices jobs away from talented developers and hiring activists with no gaming experience to push their agendas and check off ESG goals, that is the problem. as i've read a few of these "anti dei and dei people are both stupid, and i don't care for it" comments, i'll try and formulate this comment: that is a rather narrow view. DEI is only a part of a huge Propaganda Machine. it's just the door opener for Activist for a far more left cause. When there is an issue, say a building has suddenly a much higher water-bill for all tenants, then that should be a prominent topic among the tenants, so everybody gets aware, and necessary steps can be taken to find the issue. if everyone would be the "i don't care for this topic i just want to have nice topics, it would eventually lead to bigger damage, or at least cost everyone dearly. the ignoring of the issue, in order to not feel bothered by it, or asking everyone else to stop talking about it, is always a damaging position and only enables the issue further. and saying "oh Anti-DEI enables racists!" is plain stupid. they are always there, that was the enabler for DEI. there will always be a handful of cnuts in every possible political spectrum. ignoring the spectrum doesn't make the two extrems go away.

The messed up thing is that this game isn’t bad. It’s centered around exactly what Salim was talking about. It’s about a son going on one last journey with his father and finding peace with that loss. Could Salim be acting trying to manipulate people? maybe, but I don’t think he is. This game is a casualty of this gaming war, people didn’t buy this game because it was on the sweet baby detected list, plus it’s a small game that really wasn’t marketed. Race had nothing to do with it and Salim pulling the victim card is despicable, but when you see people like this on this panel, especially reality based and sammy, it makes the undecided think the DEI crowd has a point. All this hyper fixation on how Salim appears, or on his job title, etc instead of the game he and his team made doesn’t help the cause against forced DEI. As I stated, the game was fine, I would wait for a sale for whoever is interested. The game is a bit rough around the edges, and it did crash on the final boss for me, forcing me to redo the last part. I was on switch, so that could have been apart of my problem. But It was nice to see a different pantheon get its time in the spotlight and playing a smaller Metroidvania-lite after the spiderman games.

The way I see it, there are two types of ways to use DEI as an advantage: the game deves use DEI as either a sheild to use against criticism, to make money off ESG scores, or to be indirectly racist towards a certain group of people. The other is critics of DEI that use it as an excuse to be racist and get gullible people to follow that viewpoint or rage baiters to get views and interactions based on outrageous claims whether its popular or not. Regardless, this guy wrote his games death warrant by being within the ranks of Sweet Baby and will probably never recover unless he cuts ties completely, so I feel no sympathy that his game flops regardless. But i do see the problem in saying DEI is exclusively bad because it mostly involves people who aren't white. It gives no excuse to hate the game just because it features black characters or it's made by black people. Content of character, not skin tone. For the record, I'm not defending DEI. I'm just saying that some aspects of it can be positive, just not when it's forced.

I'm in this extremely uncomfortable position where I am all for uplifting representation and pushing for more diverse approaches to culture in games, if it is done in a respectful and non-intrusive way. I absolutely dislike the censorship of games and creative processes and more than anything, I am absolutely against Sweet Baby and their malicious acts within the industry (shut outs to that one Kim Belair GDC clip) But I absolutely hate how much this whole conversation has devolved into just witch hunting and how cozy people are with bad actors in whole this (this one racist guy from the podcast being a prime example) I really dislike how common "Look, this game you never heard about is DEI WOKE SCHLOPP! I want to point out that I'm no saint myself by any stretch of the imagination. If the group chats of me and my friends were to be leaked I would be nuked off of the internet. That being said, there is a distinction between making jokes, that most likely are distasteful in private between a friend group and blatantly being racist online in public. You just simply cannot act like that and ask to be not perceived to be as a racist. Some of the best games that are fun are side scrollers, like: Hollow Knight, Prince of Persia the lost crown, Nine Sols, Dragon Ball advanced adventure, Heart of Darkness. The only problematic ppl on this stream was Reailty Based and Sammy3peat, everybody else made great, solid points.
