so everything you did was fine and will work good, you do not need a wire on each of the screws for the whole plug to work, what you could (or should for me) have done would pre twist (tightly) with one pig tail for your white wires and your black wires, good pre twist with wire cap will keep power flowing through the circuit even if that plug fails (possible lose screw etc.)

You're exactly right. That's what I normally would have done. I knew I was going to hook up a GFI outlet later in the video and I wanted to show line and load. I know this has nothing to do with the 2 prong, so I should have showed them separately. Thanks for the info!

SO WHAT ABOUT all the other existing 2 prong outlets in the room. Is there a trick? or do you have to put a GFCI outlet in every outlet?

HI... If your panel box will fit the easiest fix it to install a GFCI/AFCI combo breaker where those plugs that you want to fix are. If the breaker won't fit in your panel box then I you should be able to put one GFI plug at the start of the circuit and the downstream outlets should be covered. It's a bit tricky to find the start of the circuit.. a little more than I can explain in a sentence or two.

Good information. If you use the Load connection to protect downstream outlets, you can change them to 3-prong. You then should put 2 stickers on the faceplates, "No Equipment Ground" and GFCI protected outlet ". For extending wires, I'd rather use the Wago brand lever nuts either in the splicing form or 2-postion. They are a known commodity and generally have a good reputation.

If you need to put a gfi, how do you figure which other outlets in the room are down stream or up stream?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Ай бұрын
That's a good question... The first thing to do is find the breaker to the one you want to work on. Shut off the breaker, then see which other outlets are affected. From there it's a bit of a guess to find the first outlet in the group. More than likely it'll be the first one that is closest to the panel box... I'd start with that one. Keep that breaker off and disconnect one set of wires .. Make sure the wires are good and separated then turn the power back on and see if the other outlets have quit. When you find the first outlet all the other outlets won't work with the wires disconnected. Obviously if youre not comfortable doing this, then don't attempt it!

So if you’re not sure what outlet is the main one feeding the “room” is it okay to replace every outlet with gfci? Thank you.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel
@TheHomeImprovementChannel 5 ай бұрын
HI... No I wouldn't do that. The GFI's will tend to fight each other and they will wind up tripping when they shouldn't trip. I would turn off the breaker and see all the plugs that were affected. Then you can disconnect one set of wires from one of the plugs and see which ones work and which ones don't. You'll have to turn power back on to test this. IF you're not comfortable working around live electric then certainly don't try this. But you have to eliminate one by one which one is what until you find the first one in the circuit. The first plug in the circuit will have power on one set of wires and the rest of the plugs in the circuit will all be off. I would try an educated guess by trying the plug closest to the panel box and trying that one first.

@@jloza9840 HI again. Yes on any individual circuit that you want to put a GFI plug you should only use 1 GFI plug at the beginning of the run and the rest of the plugs in that circuit can all be regular plugs. If you're trying to bring an older house up to code depending on what sort of panel box you have the breakers should also be combo arc fault/GFI as well. For example if you have an older Federal Pacific box then there's no such breaker type, but if it's a square D, then yes the breakers should be changed. I think these breakers are required everywhere except maybe bathrooms, garage plugs and outdoor plugs as well...
