How come “that carpet really tied the room together” is the bigger loss to “the Dude”? I would have guessed that having his head dunked several times into a really dirty toilet would have been considerably worse, but “the Dude” never addressed that afterwards? Obviously the Coen’s had a funnier script plot line with the carpet replacement running theme, but most folks would object more to the toilet head dunks! I guess that was part of the Dudes’s uniqueness, a pothead with decorating taste.

It’s a parody of The Big Sleep (Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall). Both stories have a rich old man hiring a detective, a femme fatale daughter and an out of control younger woman who’s involved in crime. The detective in this case is the Coen Brother’s stoner friend.

This movie is indeed a bit of a parody. As mentioned by others, it takes the structure of old detective movies and basically throws in a character (the Dude) who does not belong in such a story and is just trying to get out. One detective movie that was a big influence is "The Big Sleep," which is considered by many to have brilliant acting and a plot that doesn't make a lot of sense (partly because the studio cut out important information because they thought it was boring and they wanted to focus more on the characters who were flirting).

A parody of life is actually a really good way to put this film. I wouldn't call it a parody of any genres or anything like that but it definitely is a parody of life. The Coen brothers, the directors and writers too I think, make great movies that have unique characters that feel weird but real at the same time. They also often have weird plots. Incompetence is a common theme that they draw humor and drama from. All around some of the best film makers that work in Hollywood today. Some of the few that can actually make films and not fast food movies.

Ellie got it right. This and many other Coen Brothers movies have a lot to do with the futility of trying to make some order out of chaos. The universe doesn't care about your plans or your perception of how things should be. Stupid shit does, indeed, just keep happening and happening. Sometimes it's comically absurd like in this or "Burn After Reading" and sometimes it's dark and tragic like in "No Country for Old Men" or "Inside Llewyn Davis," but the fact remains that life is constantly unpredictable. But hey, without chaos we wouldn't have sweet, sweet serendipity.

It definitely is to the irony of life. How you can do everything right and get everything wrong. Vice versa. And it does a good job of expressing that by making life interesting. Comedy and tragedy are cousins.

The detective in the Volkswagen reminded me of a great early Coen Brothers movie, Blood Simple. The Homies should watch it.

It's a while ago that I've watched that movie. More than ten years ago. Question: Does anybody know, where the seperated bloody toe in the handkerchief came from? I've forgotten it.

To be fair, because of your accents and the way you roll you R's, you say "parody" a lot more convincingly than us in the United States. When we say "parody" it sounds like Parroty. Which is sounds like the bird lol
