I love it when reactors actually understand the artist and story behind the music. And can we talk about the absolute genius of the video itself? From the views of Johnny and June, to the decayed feast, the interspersed footage of his life, and the images of Christ (knowing what He meant to Johnny). Just heart-wrenching. I cry every time I watch it.

There will never be another. I live a few miles from Folsom Prison and the city made a beautiful bike/ walking trail that goes through Folsom and the Folsom lake. It’s beautiful. It’s called the Johnny Cash Trail. Dedicated to him.

This song caps an absolutely brilliant career and life. I don’t think any musician has ever ended with anything better than this. What a gift to us all Mr. Cash was! 1932-2003 RIP to The Man In Black

God bless Johnny Cash..the man in black... Perspective is acquired in age and the young have difficulty grasping the concept of true value in this existence...that all that glitters is not gold... RIP Johnny..🖤🙏🖤...🌿🌿🌿

My dad passed exactly one month ago today and watching this song with Johnnie looking so frail and old and battered just reminded me so much of my dad and I'm bawling my eyes out. He thought he could live another 10 years but we all knew he was going soon. I've never met a better man in my life. I'm not just saying that because he was my father. He was truly an honorable man all his life and worked so hard to support his family. 😭❤️✝️🙏Miss you Dad...

Just imagine you are being asked by this icon to cover your song... as a testament to his life! Trent Reznor is an icon like JC is for that! Amazing, haunting, beautiful and very very sad at the same time! R.I.P. Legend!!! 🖤🖤🖤

Just found your channel. Your descriptions of your thoughts are very interesting. I'm 64. Was an RN in hospice care. No one is born with a hole in their soul. We are here to learn about ourselves, learn about love, respect, humility. And, yes, don't be hard on yourselves. All will be well.

I thought I had commented but I guess not. This is the most emotionally stirring cover I have ever seen. Amazing. The imagery is surreal.

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

I have never liked any of Johnny’s music…except for this. His cover was absolute perfection and it is a punch to the gut that is on par with Bowie’s “Lazarus.”

This is one of great songs. Most artists never find one, and sometimes the artist elevates to greatness. This is one such song. Another was Elvis' In The Ghetto

I have to HIGHLY recommend that you react to Dan Vasc. If you are not familiar with him, you will be absolutely blown away. For your first foray into Dan I have to recommend his Amazing Grace cover. I've been a huge fan of his for years but right now he's going absolutely viral. I can guarantee you would get a LOT of views!

*26. February 1932 - † 12. September 2003 , the song was recorded 2002 ... man thats hard he knew after closing that piano he would never open one again :/ i lovew the fact that cashs version shows it watching from an elderly perspective while nine inch nails is quiet the opposite :D and i think i read somewhere that nine inch nails said it would be an honor wort more than a grammy to them :D

David Bowie's ' Fame ' comes to mind ... Is it any wonder ? ~ I'll reject you first ... fame fame fame fame ... Only person famous I met that I didn't regret was a passing glance with Liberace on Bourbon street / New Orleans in the late 80's ... I was a 21 year old punkish guy wear wearing cat style eyeliner ... As he passed me going the opposite direction trailed by hoards of people he smiled and said " Hello " ...

Oh, life isn't futile, the pursuit of excess material wealth is futile. Born, raised and lived a big chunk of life in big cities, I knew there was something better, so I moved to the country. There are a lot of sacrifices and not much money, life can be hard in the winter and there aren't any theaters or museums, etc. But as long as there is a roof overhead, clothing to wear, food to eat, clean water to drink and warmth in the winter, quality of life is the next worthy pursuit IMO. The wind comes off of the mountains so clean and fresh I can almost drink it and the does have their fawns in the forest that is my back yard. Mid-seventies are very, very good to me. I'm so sorry that Johnny couldn't be happy, too.

Hurts for all the right reasons. Johnny looks like my g'pa, Sounds like the man who taught me about love in the last stretch when his body was failing his spirit. I come back to this vid because it brings me back to him. Danke for the react... you always bring a view that is needed.

So this song, for me, is called Jonny cash “Hurt” or Trent Reznor’s “Butt Hurt” because TR pouted that Cash took this song and made it into an icon’s vision of Blessèd life and redemption.

That’s not even a little true. He was hesitant to let anyone cover it because it was an intensely personal song for him. Ultimately, when he saw the video paired with the cover he said that it wasn’t his song anymore and gave full props to Cash & Rubin for what they created from his song. If anything, he was extremely humble over something he compared to seeing a woman you loved with another man who you know is better for her: it hurts but you’re happy for them.
