The Elfin from Xgimi is also pixelshifted but since it is a larger DMD and higher than 540p originally it shows almost the same as 1080p res. I'm only mentioning this as you say in the video you prefer the 1080p from the Mogo Pro than the 720p on the competing projector but in reality the 720p may be better (the 720p H8 from wowoto I tried with the Mogo Pro once seemed sharper to me than the Mogo Pro and also had a far more vibrant image).@@TheHookUp

I use XGIMI Halo+ at home and I'm very happy with it. We don't have tv and it's on all day long. Good thing is you don't have to place it to the middle of th room! It's staying in a corner and it can adjust the view.

The attached photo is of the projector projecting onto my white closet doors. I still have not messed with the settings but I can't wait for our first family movie night on a larger scale. If you have issues with volume not working with your firestick, go into volume settings and you will find your solution there.

I really wish the throw distance/range were included in this review. How short of a throw and still focused and how far and still within ANSI tolerance. But this is an awesome resource for deciding which projector to purchase for casting monochrome microscopy images for taking very accurate measurements :)

Projection distance would have been an interesting metric to note. I'm contemplating buying a projector that we could also use outside for movie nights during the summer and we'll need a longer range. But even though mobile would feels like it should fit this scenario I suspect a lot of them aren't powerful enough for much more than a few meters. But, the quality of work in the rest of the comparisons was really helpful and I thank you for the clear and comprehensive comparisons for so many core metrics. To me it seems like the Nebula Capsule 3 is the overall most balanced one. Compact, good picture quality, good sound, good performance and app support, well brightness, ok battery life + type C. If only the price was a bit lower

With all the bad reviews on the Samsung Freestyle, I avoided it and instead bought a cheap $250 projector. After finding out that you had to download some shady app to get Airplay, I returned it, plus dust was already getting on the inside of the lens (how?). Got the Freestyle for slightly under $500, wow, it's really great, no regrets, Airplay out of the box along with the official Netflix. Serves as a competent speaker too. $500 is a great price point for it. I actually run it in standard mode taking up only 28watts of energy and have it run all day long, luv it!

@@TheHookUp Even at $500 I don't think it has any competition. If you primarily use it as an HDMI projector, then the video and audio performance takes center stage. But for me, and I think think most people who buy a transportable projector, connectivity features are equally as important. Having all the legit major apps included + being able to Chromecast to it + Apple play from not only ios devices but from any Mac + any Windows computer without having to install anything extra is phenomenal.

When measuring contrast, please use a checkered pattern instead of an all black (where brands can juice up the contrast by software gimmick)

On some of the projectors you can tell when the "all black screen magic" happens and the light source turns all the way off. In those cases I bring up the plex play status bar which forces the light source back on.

I saw that you did not like the Samsung freestyle model in one of your videos, but it got a good score in the collective projector comparison (it is in the top 3). My expectations from the projector are as follows ( 1. If possible, it should be self-powered or rechargeable with powebank for use in camps. 2. I want the image quality to be really satisfactory. 3. Xgimi has the Elfin and the Hirizon models don't have batteries and are 800 lumens and 22 respecrivly lumans. The Horizon also comes in a 4k version. They have the super smart features and both work great. (I own both) I hope that helps!

I just returned the Samsung freestyle! Could barely watch it in anything but total darkness the fact they priced that initially at 1,000 is one of the more insane pricing decisions I’ve ever seen! So so disappointed! It is NOT. A tv replacement and for north of 600 I’d expect it to be, much less 1,000. Got a 200 Wimius and it’s brilliant! Cheers for this though your vids are great

I still think $900 for a 250 ANSI lumen projector with no battery, slow OS, and limited connectivity was absolutely insane. Especially since they were marketing it as a TV replacement. They have now cut the price by roughly 50% and have a battery option (which also needs a price cut), which make it a much more reasonable option.

I have a Capsule 3 and the screen door effect is very strong. It uses the 0.23" DMD where as the Halo+ uses a 0.33" DMD. I wonder how much less apparent the screen door effect is on the Halo+

I don't notice any screen door on the Capsule 3. Are you sure you have a Capsule 3? SDE was very apparent on both the Capsule and Capsule 2, but the 1080p screen of the Capsule 3 has plenty of pixel density.

@@TheHookUp Yes it's a Capsule 3. The SDE is very apparent to me. Seems likely something to do with the 0.23" DLP chip being only 540p and having to dither/switch to show 1080p. I haven't tested many portable projectors though. I don't remember having this bad of SDE on a 11 year old DLP W1070. An old JVC HD250 I picked up for $75 with LCoS has basically no SDE. I am guessing there would be a difference in SDE from the Halo+ and the Capsule 3 due to the Halo+ using a 0.33" DMD. Doesn't seem like anything in the portable space has a 0.47" DMD which is the smallest chip with native 1080p without dithering. These dither/switch to 4K.

@@parawizard Yeah, pixel shifting is becoming the norm. However, pixel shifting actually reduces SDE, because it blurs the lines between individual pixels (they shift in more of a "blob" than a grid). Most people say the downside of pixel shifting is reduced contrast rather than reduced resolution.

I hooked up a Christie DS+305W (Only other DLP right now) /w DLP 0.9" DMD at 1400x1050 and corrected a 1080p movie to be the same size on the wall. The Capsule 3 should have a pixel density advantage with 16:9 content vs the 4:3 projector. It also has the advantage of a softer image as the Christie is tack sharp (It did MSRP at 14K USD in 2008) which should help blur any grid. Looking at it though I can see a grid on the Capsule 3 much further away than the Christie. I do not have my W1070 anymore to compare. I am not sure what the Capsule 3 is doing but I can see the grid pattern in the content compared to much older DLP projectors.

Taking pictures up close in the above scenario the grid on the Capsule 3 seems thicker and less defined but more apparent. The Christie has a thin but very sharp grid. To me I noticed the distracting grid/sde on the Capsule 3 right away but haven't noticed this on any of my other projectors except when close to the screen at large screen sizes. I wonder what the Xgimi Horizon's grid looks like vs the Capsule 3.

Thank you for the super detailed videos. I'm looking for a small projector for a closet I've converted into a kids play fort, but I'm having the hardest time finding the true minimum throw range before these projectors can't display a focused image. The things that really matter to me in this tiny space are heat / noise, and minimum throw. The projector will be about 30 inches from the screen. In your testing have you found that these projectors can produce a clear (even if small) image at this distance?

is there any good small(er) portable projector without battery included? Something you can ideally just toss in a backpack and won't use much space and can use around? As long as you're not camping there's bound to be some power outlet and even when camping a dedicated powerpack/generator might work better than whatever is included.
