Ever since Willie Venstra of the 2013, 2014, and 2015 Bluecoats, I LOVE how him and Samuel Crawford, instead of just keeping straight time and standing like a statue up there on the podium like so many others, really tap into the grooviness of BC's shows! Willie and Sam really get into it and truly add something to the show with the creative and enhancing cues and body movements. Can't wait to see Sam back again in the 2017 season!

I think he means in relevance to everyone else. The only other drum majors that I've noticed that get that much into their show and move while doing so is probably the Phantom Regiment. Dean Patterson specifically.

I mean you don't want too much of that. Dean Patterson levels of movement might be one thing in a concert setting, but as someone on the field, I prefer just straight time. If you can do both, great, but moving around and breaking from the pattern can get in the way of showing good time to the ensemble. I've never been on the other side of either of these conductors, so I can't speak to the readability, but still. I'm wary of that kind of performance in marching music.

Awesome! The drum major in my band watched this and now she does a lot of the things you do, like duts, funny comments, and nodding her head. It's pretty funny because I used to march cymbals and I thought the DM just flapped her arms around, but now that I'm in the front ensemble, and watching this, it's a lot more than that and crazy demanding. Great job!

Around 7:48 is kind of my favorite part! His conducting also reminds me of how I conduct! There are so many great elements to this. The only downside (lol) is that there are less people in the front ensemble. I like the setup, but I think we need to quit reducing the amount of people in the pit!

In most drumcorps, marching members are taught how to keep their upper body still while moving at high speeds. Drum majors obviously, are not. :)

Joseph Marsh it's really not comparable to marching, but you do get to experience and express the music in a different way when you conduct. it sort of just flows out through your hands instead of your feet
