Ted is a nice stand alone. I know every episode uses the monster of the week to explore the characters to some extent. But When She Was Bad (ep 1), Lie To Me (ep 7) and Ted really placing characters first is really a mark of the show maturing and becoming the masterful cultural icon that is studied in universities it is today.

I really dig both of these episodes, TED becaus it feels like an as afterschool special (and John Ritter is amazing) and BAD EGGS because I agree that it feels like a 50s monster movie. I'm finding that many of the kids who review BUFFY hate these episodes (and they're like 12 so the AFTERSCHOOL SPECIAL reference means nothing to them, if you don't know you school ask around, someone old enough to listen to NIRVANA.

"Dru was like, no, now I call the shots." Actually, Dru always called the shots. If you go back and look at the scenes with Spike and Dru together, Spike always takes a beat and looks to Dru before he acts. She was always calling the shots. even when she was weak. It is just now, she can do it more directly.

Completely agree. It's such a strong episode because it manages to root a silly robot story in the real horrors of child abuse, and the fear that your parent will prioritize their partner's happiness over your safety.

I was going through some shit at home when Ted first aired and I gotta say, I felt SEEN by Buffy. Buffy Summers, vampire slayer extraordinaire understands me. So I loved this episode. It genuinely helped me cope. I had no idea so many people considered it a bad one for years. I'll always have a soft spot for it.

I was also shocked to find out that this was considered a dud episode by so many in the fandom. It's a fantastic episode and John Ritter is brilliant in this.
@williambowman16609 ай бұрын
@@menty6633It’s not a dud episode. The early shows get retrospective grief because of the increase of the quality of the show, topics, and mature themes. Most all of the naysayers did not watch this when it aired. The folks now, most binged watched, can not understand how the show was talking to us. My friends and I thought having a popular John Ritter play an abusive stepfather was chilling and great. 2 girls I knew confided to me that they had a stepfather that in public was supportive but in private told them they were spoiled and nothing special. The internet viewers can’t get that. The reaction to Bad Eggs was okay but everyone thought the red neck Vampires were the best.

@@williambowman1660 I am an old school Buffy fan. I started watching around the middle of season 1 in 1997. I've always liked this one, but it does get a very mixed response from the fandom. Whether that is because binge watching the show so many years after the fact is a factor, I don't know. Could be. I've found there to be some wild swings of opinion when it comes to Buffy in general, and there are many pockets of the fandom that hunker down on opinions or ships that I find puzzling.

Notice the overalls Buffy wears the day after she "kills" Ted. They are very out of character for her. Sudden change of clothes, cutting of hair, pushing away friends and family, being withdrawn and sullen, threats of suicide... all are signs of depression. Buffy has exhibited all of these traits at various times throughout the 1st 2 seasons so far.

Quick history lesson The decision had been made to move Buffy from Monday night to Tuesday. At this time the WB had no programming on Tuesday and Buffy has not been on for even a year. The move was to be the second week in January. Whedon knew he had to do something to get his audience to want to move and stay. Bad Eggs was the last stand alone Monday show. The next one you watch, Surprise, was the last Monday and the next, Innocence was the Tuesday premiere. I’m telling you this to understand why the next 2 episodes are written and produced the way you watch. For a monetary reason they are 2 of the most important episodes of the series. If the move had failed, Buffy might not have lasted and the network would not have given the leeway that he earned. The next 5 wonderful, trailblazing, and great seasons happened mostly due to the next 2 and then the final 8 episodes. Enjoy the journey
