Smells like a teenage boys bedroom is about the most diplomatic way of describing that particular scent I've ever heard! 🤣

That really is a stunning garden. I've been racking my brain to remember where I saw a large Enkianthus campanulatus growing ever since I saw the picture on Wednesday and I think it was at the Hyde Estate in West Sussex in their rhododendron gardens. That's a garden I've always really liked too. Sadly, not enough water and too much sun at my place to grow such pretty plants .

I might add I’m not sure I agree with Matthew about the smell and it only seemed to emanate from one specimen. Regards Stephen

Enkianthus campanulatus is spectacular in my Rotorua, NZ garden at the moment. Mine has grown to about 4 meters, is great for picking and has stunning autumn col,our. It's an unusual shrub here but should be more widely grown.

Charming plant! Must see if I can grow it here in Washington. I think it would be fabulous in a flower arrangement in an entry vestibule. One campanulatus and one rubens mixed in with some peonies, e.g. What do you think? Would they hold up well if cut and put into water?
@thehorti-culturalists29 күн бұрын
I'm sure it would make a good cut flower however I don't think I could bring myself to cut it. Regards Stephen

This episode had me smiling throughout. Thank you. Northern Wisconsin USA. Acidic soil here. Don't suppose these are deer resistant? Would you guess?

Love your video on enkianthus. I grow one but I think it's too dry as its on a bank, can I move it and when?. I live in Southern Ireland. Thanks.
@thehorti-culturalists29 күн бұрын
They will move quite well if shifted when dormant. Regards Stephen

Hi Stephen and Matt. Inspired by your video, I bought an Enkianthus campanulatus Prettycoat, but the plant I received is very lanky and has very long shoots with some leaves only at their tops (whereas it was advertised to be "compact"... but I guess that's relative). Would I do wrong to cut these long shoots back by, say, half? Or should I leave it as it is?
@thehorti-culturalists24 күн бұрын
I would just leave it as they have a naturally tiered form that pruning could ruin. Regards Stephen

Are there varieties that are under 3 meters as mature plants?
@thehorti-culturalists29 күн бұрын
Most people won't live long enough for most species to reach 3metres! Regards Stephen

Hot tip for growing enkianthus, if you have a small shrub version in a pot, don't go on a week's vacation during a raging hot spell and leave your son in charge of watering..... ☠️ I bought it years ago, knowing nothing about it except it was the 4th shrub in a buy 4, get 40 percent off all of your purchases 😂 Farewell, enkianthus
