It can be so angering listening to people regurgitate tips and tricks they've heard but don't fully understand themselves. Audio can be so deceptive for reasons that can get very complex, but you know how to navigate through it all. I watched your hour long video about mixing drums and it blew me away. Exactly the type of sound I was after but didn't really know how to get to it in the mixing stage. Anyways, thanks a million, I'll be here for the next one!

as a millennial, it took me a long time to get in situations in real studios when I finally understood what all the bussing and routing in DAWs was even based on. DAWs are amazing tools but the fundamentals come from decades of recording sound pre-computer. I love my DAW, and I love my TASCAM Porta Two even more.

I'm just echoing everybody else's sentiment here, but seriously mate, I have found no other mixer/engineer online who even comes close to the wisdom you are sharing with us. There are some amazing mixers out there, with great info and practical examples to share, but they are often on either side of a competence spectrum - either too beginner focused or too far into the professional weeds to be useful to intermediates. Forgive the obvious analogy but your lessons sit snugly in the mix. They provide clarity for those of us who lack the formal training and terminology, while simultaneously expanding our perceptions of what mixing can achieve, and how it can be used. Keep 'em coming, brotha.

Dude. This video instantly made my mixes better. I took an old mix I did the other day and just tweaked the levels and some EQ in mono, and I got it sounding how you said it should sound. The kick, snare, bass, and vocals are clear at low volume, and the high end of the snare just coming up in front of the vocal. Dude. This shit is the most important video I've ever watched on mixing. That moment when KZbin has been around for 13 years and we still didn't reach peak mixing tutorial videos. Until this guy that is. You sir, know your shit. And I for one has learned the lesson of mixing on quiet volume (a mix that sounds great quiet will likely sound amazing loud, while a mix that sounds great loud will often sound crap when played quiet - also goodbye ear fatigue). But until now I have not understood that the very same idea applies to mono and stereo. Mind blown.

Yeah, quiet mixing is key! I do still spend a good amount of time at loud volumes, to check how the transients are hitting my ears and to make sure nothing is too sharp or too full. Quiet mixes can be too full and sound great, but when you crank it suddenly the room is swamped by 100Hz and the kick subs are smearing the bass movement. Every mixing volume has its uses for me, I also like conversational level to see if the mix is too loud, meaning it shouldn't make it impossible to have a conversation!!

@@TheHouseofKushTV I love taking a couple passes super quiet to hear what's coming out on the top of the mix. Sometimes I'll keep turning it down until I can only hear one or two elements and then try to bring everything up to match that at the quiet level, and then go back up to normal volume. That's sometimes a really reliable way for me to get a nice basic balance to start mit- picking over.

For LOGIC USERS: Go to your "Stereo Out" track (not the master fader), then add plug-in from the factory list as such. "UTILITY - GAIN - STEREO" (not "dual mono"). Once the plugin is open, press the MONO button on it and you are good to go. Don't forget to turn it off once your mix feels great and then you can crack a cold one and marvel at your stellar mixdown. i approve of this technique!

I am going to try this. I been producing for over 30 years and i swear i STILL cant nail a perfect mix for the life of me. I mixdown on the NS-10M's, i mix down on a shitty mono garage speaker. i mixdown and listen in the car, listen on a phone. listen in the DT-220's. REPORTING BACK: Finally had a chance to apply this technique to a song i previously had about 10 hours into a mixdown on. It worked great! Certain things stuck out like a sore thumb that i didnt notice before. Especially on the vocals! It seemed so much easier to dial them in. I spent about 2 more hours getting everything re-faded at very low volumes. THEN i almost forgot to turn the mono off. haha, And when i did it's like Cotton Candy on your Ice Cream!!! To hear it in all of its stereo glory at a good volume it really surprised me and made me smile. I will probably be applying this technique to all my future mixes. Thanks again Kush! I'm an old school guy from the 60's that grew up listening to many musical parts on records and have been trying the work the same way as 60's records with things double tracked and lots of stuff in the mix. I've been driving myself nuts trying to get it all in there with no luck and happened upon you channel about an hour ago. By going to mono I fixed things in 5 minutes that I've spent countless hours on because of masking(2 acoustics, 2 electrics(clean) bass, piano, and kick with some low string in there as well some times.)By just be addressing the masking problems in mono it made a world of difference.I made a living playing music for almost 40 years and in a couple of minutes you help save me from(as you described) my ears shutting down from to much info.Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Right on! That reminds me, I need to do an ep on how to "properly" double track instruments. Forgive me if you know all this, I'm typing it partly to congeal my thoughts: don't just record the same part on the same instrument twice, they never did that in the 60's (or any era, really). Record different voicings in different registers on different instruments wherever possible, to minimize masking and maximize contrast. And keep each instrument away from the notes of other instruments. I arrange everything on piano like an orchestra, separate by default with overlap for drama and texture!

I've noticed that the difference between a professional mix engineer and a novice are all the things you mentioned. Working in mono and also working at moderate or low mix volumes (unless the client walks in of course) are all something pros do. You'll get so much further working this way, it's just not the most exciting way to work.

I read about kendrick lamar's producer basically doing this by mixing on a shitty mono speaker instead of typical studio monitors. The logic was "if I can make the mix sound good on these small mono speakers, it'll bump on anything." would you recommend that? if you also use a mono speaker to mix?

It's a tradition that goes back to the 70's with the venerable auratone, aka 'horrortone'. My second set of speakers are the ns-10's, but I also have a pair of Avantone mix cubes to check on as well. I *definitely* recommend getting a pair of band-limited references, even some crappy usb speakers can help. It always helps to get a totally different perspective, and a smaller one at that!

Do you think you could do a video on adding stereo width to vocals? Whenever I mix in mono, I have a problem where my vocal will sound well leveled, until I go back to stereo, and the vocal is buried under all the stereo information in the mix, even if there is some stereo FX on the vocal. Maybe I am not doing enough side compression, or should be layering more FX and sending them all to a bus? Any info would help!

Hmm... it sounds to me like maybe your idea of a "well leveled" vocal in mono is actually "too quiet". It's a common mistake to try to make the mono mix sound like a narrow version of the stereo mix, but that never works. The more panned sounds you have in the mix, the louder the vocal needs to be in mono. Try making the vocal and snare almost uncomfortably loud in mono, see where that gets you :-)
