I don't comment much on youtube videos, but this series was extremely helpful. I've struggled with understanding buck bedding in big woods/hill country. You did a great job explaining it and how to use a slightly off wind to capitalize on it. Thank you!

Climbers are good stands for just kinda walking around with atleast for me. I like these videos I have been watching them all trying to learn more. I only hunt 14 acres so it’s tough to walk to far around. I’m thinking about trying the state land around the area sometime this season
@MrShysterme

I still like my climber if I know I'm in the right woods for one, but I'd rather have a hang on with climbing sticks if going in somewhere unknown because they always work if there are any trees. Field edges or disturbed land often have no trees that a climber will work on.

first off, I love the show! you guys know how to relay the information to the general public! not all hunters are year round deer commandos and it's nice to watch, listen, understand, and learn from your videos. I've only hunted a couple of times when i was younger and that was out of a blind over looking acres of open field during firearm season. last year i finally had time to actually spend in the woods got a cheap bow found a spot set up. saw 2 does and a nice little 6 pt. I'm not out for a trophy I'm just out for meat. unfortunately the does never gave me a clean shot. the 6pt was in range however, he was behind me and all I could do was watch him as he walked away. so this year I've been taking hunting more seriously and the videos you guys have produced have contributed so much to my increased knowledge. I found a new spot that is very promising. (using the kayak approach) and this weekend I'm going to scout the boundaries of the marsh to see if there is any sign in the abutting hardwood so wish me luck. That being said come hunt SWMi sometime! if ya'll do you will have a place to stay! keep up the great content and good info! lastly do you have any tips on using grunts or bleats?
@TheHuntingPublic
@TheHuntingPublic 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ray! You will get a shot at one soon! We don't call a ton to deer unless we can see them. For example, if you see a buck passing by out of range, wait until he gets behind a tree or something and grunt to him softly until he hears it. You don't want them to pinpoint your location up in a tree. It's easy to over do it. Many bucks we call in take one or two grunts.

Just a tip on the cell phone question. If you have a phone that you can remove the battery easily, go on eBay and buy a few extra batteries for your phone. Charge them up ahead of time and bring them with you. It beats using a mobile charger in my opinion. And depending on your phone, the batteries can be pretty cheap. Hope that helps.

I hunt the deep dark mountains of Harlan county Ky and there is only natural food, such as acorns and wild growing greenery. A million log roads old and new all over this county. A ton of reclaimed strip mines. I’m a lifetime hunter and at 42 it’s still hard around here to get to where the mature bucks are!

Yes! So glad to hear you guys are planning to try saddles this year. Been hunting from a saddle the last three years and love it. Just posted to the ask winke site two weeks ago asking if you guys have ever considered saddle hunting. Looking forward to seeing how you setup to film. The ability to keep the tree between you and the deer is such an advantage especially when hunting high pressure states like michigan where i hunt. Y'all gotta get your butts up to the wolverine state and match witts against a wiley 3 year old great lakes buck. Cause if they get to be 3 in michigan, thats an educated buck (and a real trophy). Thanks for filling the content void for the average public land hunter. So much of the deer hunting content today is focused on managing and hunting private, which is fine if you can afford land ownership or even leasing of private ground. For many, however, hunting public ground is the only option available.

How do saddles work on rainy days where the deer can sneak up on you in heavy timber? What about when the deer come from unexpected directions? Half my bow kills were where I was expecting them to come in from one direction and then I glance somewhere else and "there's a buck at 20 yards!".

great series. I only wish I knew about it before hand do I could ask questions. Love the channel and the content. The channel has giving me motivation to explore different states public land. I have hunted a lot of public land in MI and PA and this series will help me to locate quality hunting locations. MI gets a lot of hunting pressure, but you proved that some hunters are lazy and don't get in the thick stuff. It seems to me that deer are very similar to fishing for bass. I like to locate points, draws, saddles, and ditches. These areas seem to produce good quality fish.

It'd be great to tie using maps and boots on the ground together with setting up strategic trail cams based upon map/boots intel and then coming back to the cams and using that data to fine tune even more. Where do trail cams fit into all this for you? I buy cheapies and set them up high on public land. Also, curious about what you guys think about bringing in a camo cloth and a few stakes to make quick blinds that you brush in. Regarding tree stand carry straps, it adds weight, but I buy surplus MOLLE packs that just have the frame and straps and tie the bottom of the stand platform to the plastic frame. You then have a sternum strap and padded belt.

Have you ever witnessed or heard from Dan on a scenario where a buck will bed facing in to the wind instead of having the wind at his back? What would that scenario be? I have this bed I've found where this little point of trees runs out in to this marsh/lake. Around this point the water usually comes up to it on 3 different sides and pretty deep. So I figured he would want the wind go to blow up thst point of little trees to him. But in general theory that would mean he would face the water with wind at his back. But why would he face the wAter when 99 percent of the time nothing is going to come from that way? Would he rather bed there with the wind coming from the wAter and him looking down the little point of trees? Sorry if this got a little confusing. Just trying to figure out which wind this deer will be in there on.
@TheHuntingPublic
@TheHuntingPublic 6 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say in that scenario. We see them face the water or down the bank often. He could be bedded there on multiple winds. Dan sees that often in the marsh.

@TheHuntingPublic

It's hard to say exactly. If access is tricky we tend to go in early morning under the cover of darkness and/or wait for wet windy conditions. Otherwise it may be best just to try it on both and see what happens, then adjust from there.

Not sure if you guys check all comments but #1 i love the what you guys do. Im just having a hard time relating to my area in central / northwest Connecticut. I do well as a stand hunter & have several P&Y bucks over the years but id like to get more aggressive. I have private & State areas that are quality. I do see shooters every year but its sporadic & random & 80% of the time its during the rut. Id love to see you guys do a seminar & get boots on the ground im my area. If you could possibly do something like that id be happy to help organize it. The woods are different here obviously & id like to see how you decipher things here in the Northeast.. I run a Facebook page called "Connecticut Bowhunters Exclusive" I welcome you guys to check it out! Thanks.. I

@GLHF_Dunnskies

I think they were referring to using the hunting saddles instead of a tree stand. they're pretty neat little contraptions. but you face the tree so you're constantly having to look right/left. or trying to lean and shoot around the tree. just google hunting saddles. I don't know how I feel about them yet. they're more convenient than tree stands as far as sound and weight are concerned. I'm still waiting on a few more "trusted reviews" of the product before I commit or try it.
