That bird was all target . You made the right call. Great lesson in turkey hunting. A simple barbwire fence can lock a bird up. This is priceless footage and a great lesson I learned from. Thanks guys.

I personally would take a 50 yard shot but I've also patterned my gun out to 80 yards with 10 different turkey loads to find the one that patterns the best out of my gun. Having said that I wouldn't promote my 8 and 9 year old boys to shoot anything over 30 yards away. I think you made a wise decision and it's always good to see the youngins get involved. Great stuff as usual guys.

My 20 gauge with TSS #7 would reach out easily to 50 yards, but not knowing what's behind that bird would be a concern. In a wide open field where the entire load of shot is unobstructed I have a lot of confidence, especially when his neck is stretched up like that.

You must have neighbors that are letting some go. Where I am in Alabama the turkey decline is terrible. The first 2 weeks you can see and hear turkeys. After that they travel to far off areas in yeti and igloo coolers. They don’t gobble anymore inside those coolers.

Great video! And so glad y'all were teaching young Master Bennett the right way if hunting! One suggestion though, y'all might want to straighten out the tail feathers of your decoy. The scruffy feathers tell other birds he's not healthy. Illness and poor diet make the feathers scruffy looking. 😉

This is a double edged sword. If I was on private and knew what was beyond the hill and I knew for certain there was no one there I would take the shot knowing that the pellets wouldn't travel much further than 300-400 yards. But if I didn't know what was beyond the hill there was no way the trigger would get pulled

Best way to reduce the predators woul be to run some traps during the trapping season. Bobcats are not as hard to catch as coyotes, but both are fun and challenging. You will definitely catch some cats and thin them out. Invest in good American traps.MB 550s are hard to beat. Made by Minnesota Trapline.

First thing that comes to mind is much of the shot doesn't have a backstop which if you had local knowledge and knew that nothing was behind there I would be OK because the pellets will be on the ground within 200yds my biggest problem is 50 yards for a turkey shot is way too far

When it comes to predator management dont forget the nest predators, raccoons, possums, and skunks. With the decrease in trapping and racoon hunting nest predator populations can explode and wreak havoc on turkey nests.
@robertmashburn39003 жыл бұрын
Depending on your budget, but with a 20 gauge with TSS load and good tight choke like I use I'll take that shot every day at 50 yrds. I've actually shot a turkey at 62 yrds and dropped him like a rock. But it's what's in your comfort zone and what you have confidence in your gun and yourself .
@matthewhoffman50553 жыл бұрын

I doubt the little lad could make a shot that far or have a weapon that patterns out to 50 yards, so Hell NO! My guns Easily shoot 50 yards but I spend a lot of time patterning my weapons every year. Knowing your setup inside and out is Ethical hunting not keeping your shots less then 40 yards because you don’t pattern every year. I’ve seen choke load combo’s you shouldn’t shoot out to 40 yards.
