I, too watch the toaster, when I was younger (like maybe...7?) I was watching it and wanted to touch it but I *knew* that wasnt a good idea (smart 7yo), so I had the *brilliant* idea of taking something else, touching the red bit with THAT, then touching it, so I could feel the supposed heat by proxy, (great? plan?). Guess what I took as my proxy finger? A butter knife! That's when I learnt about fuses, fuseboxes and electrocution. Good times. Over 20 years later, I just watch the glowy redness and when I get the impulse to touch..I remember...

The trick with cooking a cake in a rice cooker is to use it like a bain marie. Put water in and then the cake in (in a seperate pan!) because the water will stop it turning itself off. It's to do with sensor detecting when the bottom of the rice cooker gets over 100 degrees celsius. If there's always water in the bottom, it won't get oo hot and will stay on. At least, that is what I have been told by rice cooker expert Uncle Roger!

When I was a child, our oven did not work, so my late mother would make vanilla cake in a microwave-proof, donut shaped plastic container. It tasted better than what you describe, though, I believe it is because my mother did it so much she perfected to make it taste good with the texture. It brings back nice memories of eating the cake she would make, as a treat for school with a pastel coloured icing.

We lived in a tiny apartment after we got married and our oven died for over a year and all we had was the crock pot so I got really good at crock pot baking. The trick is to put a towel over it before you put the lid on to catch condensation so the top doesn't get wet.

7:43 there's also a version of putting water in the pan and a smaller cake tray on top and covering it so it's a steam bake. I've tried that, the air fryer, waffle iron. Rice cooker is great for puddings as well!
@emberise6613
@emberise6613 5 ай бұрын
I grew up with cakes made in the microwave, though they are often more like puddings than cakes (the British version of pudding - like steamed puddings - not the American one). But also other cakes (Parkin was a good one). We did have specific recipes for it though, not just normal cake batter. You can make excellent sticky toffee puddings in the microwave - as long as you don't put them on for too long. Really easy to burn them in the middle. I also once had an excellent recipe for banana upside down cake in a slow cooker, though we lined it with foil first. The bananas went red-purple. I think you have to adapt the recipes and cook them at the right settings to get the best results.

Sorry if I am telling you what you already know! But the reason food KZbinrs are doing less food content/food tips and instead challenge/gimmick things like this is because of KZbin itself. The actual cooking/baking videos, like tips on how to make food, how to decorate, stuff like that, it just isn't pulling in the views, engagement, and attracting new subscribers, and KZbin itself is not recommending those videos to people at all. Where as things like this, the price points, or videos about trends, those are giving Laurie and channels like her views and traffic flow. How To Cook That did a video on it a while ago that explains it better than I did, but it just sucks as yeah, many of us enjoy that content, I am sure they also want to create it, but if they want to stay relevant and make money they need to do stuff like this!

10:14 in RE: the air fryer Perhaps covering the batter in the beginning, and then taking it off? Air fryers super-het the outside of things. Cakes need internal heating. The microwave is all internal, quick heat, and the air fryer is all quick outside heat-precise opposites, in this case.🤗 13:23 Dishwasher: I have always seen foods placed on the top rack. Fun video Laurie 🤭 Not sure I woulda done the toaster!!! Giant fire hazard there. My Mom in the 70’s baked cakes in the crockpot and the microwave all the time. My mom would use crockpot while doing other things. Not having to be tied down to the oven. I’ve used the microwave to “finish” a cake that wasn’t completely baked in the middle. And I make mug cakes in the microwave all the time. Chocolate cakes bake better in the micro than white. White cakes don’t come out with a very good texture. Too rubbery. But if you need some quick cake for cake pops/cakescicles, definitely a time saver. I I have baked cakes in my instant pot. But honestly, it takes the same amount of time in the oven. So not really worth it.

When I was a kid, I had a babysitter who taught me how to make "Iron Cheese Sandwiches". Basically a grilled cheese sandwich, but you put the sandwich in a envelope of aluminum foil, and then put the iron on each side for a few minutes. It heated quickly and would come out amazing. If you didn't move the iron much, the browned bread would have the pattern of the iron on it (with the steam holes, etc) which was kind of a kick. The big bonus for a kid... there was no pan to wash. That said, cake in a dishwasher is silly. I've heard you can bake a cake in a box under a campfire. Try that. (I know you can boil water in a paper cup in a campfire. I've actually done that.)

They actually sell specifically made "grilled cheese bags" but I've never bought them.😊 And maybe the container that was used in the dishwasher should not have had the vent lid but a regular solid lid. I don't think that would help much but who knows...😊 Thanks for the videos and for the laughs!❤

Maybe if you tried egg rings to do mini cakes in the frying pan? My great aunt once cooked salmon in the dishwasher. I think it involves several layers of foil.

My Mom used to bake and decorate cakes and when Microwaves came out her and I took a microwave cooking class. We learned how to make cake and other desserts.

We used to have a waffle iron brownie recipe. It was SO good. We used like a Belgian waffle maker for it. I wish I still had that. Also, Betty Crocker has a slow cooker lava cake recipe that's really good. It does take long, but it's worth the wait.

That was hilarious. So glad none of the appliances were harmed or I would be running in to you at Walmart again.
