I am 70 years old, ride about 2000 Km a month now, used to ride a lot more. I still ride my 1971 Peugeot px10 which I bought for $400. I also have a trail bike Trek Roscoe, which is 3 years old. Trail bikes keep breaking for me. I also have a 1983 Specialized for indoor training, paid $150, and a 1981 Sakine which I paid $180, converted to a gravel/ touring bike. For me Steel is real. $500 for Computers, etc, I had a heart attack, pay close attention to heart monitor. $40 for a roller trainer I spend about $30/year on cycling shoes, $20/year on shorts. I wax my chains get about 3 years out of a chain. Over the years, have spent about $1000 on tools. I do not get caught up in what is trendy, only what is most comfortable. Cycling can be very economical, or it can bankrupt you, depends on your state of mind.

Love your voice bro! 🙂 Really nice video! One idea that I would like to make a video on and suggest you as well, is the importance of having a serious hobby! Putting in 6 years and several thousand kms on the bikes is definitely a serious hobby which has long term positive effects on physical as well as mental health... something the next generation (i.e. 10 yrs younger than us) is sorely lacking and I feel we need to be their guides!

Thanks Unmesh! That's a great idea for a video, I had my hobbies growing up, but none were outdoorsy ... wish I had gotten into cycling when I was 26 instead of 36!

That is really well summarized.. I have an idea about the total expense that I have done and I think its about 15-20% higher than yours but in about 3 years of my cycling journey at 15K Kms. A major contributor to all of that is the apparel section - Jerseys': have kept it in the range of 2.-3K, but BIBs, gloves, headwear and sunglasses.. :(.. Damn! those OAKLEYs, but they do look good. I still feel that its a very expensive sport in India because of the purchasing power parity between India and other countries. Anyways, nothing much can be done about it - the only way to get ahead is get enough mileage on the bikes owned, keep good health and fitness. Great content as always..
@TheIndianCyclist Жыл бұрын
Thank you :) Significantly higher in half the time, and not from bikes!? Man, that's something! How many bikes do you have though? And yes, can't deny the Oakley's look fantastic - especially the Kato IMHO. Have you had any flaking problems with the Oakley film? I took very good care of mine, still started to flake in about 2 years. Few others have said this is a known problem, but I'm not sure if specific just to the Sutro that I have or other models as well.

@@TheIndianCyclist I started with a Polygon cascade 3 (size M) - landed up with back problems, then sold it Next, was Polygon premier 5 in size L - completed about 3.5K on these bikes. I now own a Scott Subcross 30 that I rode all of 2022 about (8K Kms) and then got my first roadie TREK EMONDA ALR 5 (as advised by Ronit) and have been in love with it. I haven't been riding for the last 3 months though because of a disc bulge; hoping to get back on the saddle from June onwards and its going to be Scott Subcross 30 during the rains in Goa. I have not had an issue with flaking, but I have started to see stains on the lenses. I had the JAWBREAKER from OAKLEYs and the issue I have had is the nose clip was completely corroded and had become very brittle. I had stopped using them and was very disappointed with the brand. Is that the start of flaking? I then got a pair of AGU (only because Jumbo Visma uses them) and they look super! However, they are a slightly delicate. Since, I had never owned a SUTRO and so I got one of those too - a photochromic sutro and they are just WOW! I do a lot of early morning rides and I wanted to have a photochromic glass. I am looking to get the SUTRO Black someday.
@TheIndianCyclist Жыл бұрын
I dare say the emonda will be even better in Goa, as long as your health allows it though; disc bulge sounds very serious! Re: Oakley flaking, pause at the oakley clip in this video, you'll see what I mean, I was talking about the lens too. Not like it flakes off, but more like it losing its coating in parts, despite good care. Must say a photochromatic pair sounds really handy, i have to keep my glasses off for 30 to 60 minutes on some rides.

Spending on bicycles, accessories and other stuff is purely personal. There are people who spend crazy money or spend on one good bicycle and ride for rest of their life. Yet, the bottom line is its all come to bicycles. Better than a car. Great video by the way. Cheers

I just bought the exact Domane SL5 in mercury color today. Found this video while looking for a water bottle cage to match the bike paint maroon to black color scheme. You caught me… Putting my wallet away for bike related purchases until at least the bike shop has mine built. Busted😂😂.

It's pretty simple and straightforward. Is cycling an expense sport? Yes. But only if you want it to be. Only if you want to keep things more "exciting"(For the lack of a better word) 😅

I've bought x road bikes, all carbon. Every time, I hesitated before buying, thinking do I really need to spend so much? Every single time, it's been worth every single paisa for the sheer enjoyment of riding them. I refuse to total how much I've spent on bikes and assorted accessories so far 🤐
@TheIndianCyclist Жыл бұрын
Vijay, I'm still on my first carbon road bike (though second road bike) and those were exactly my thoughts too. Took me about a year to decide to buy it, then still delayed waiting for, 'some event'. Finally got an offer I couldn't refuse. In the right spots, the bike really comes into its own and man, couldn't be happier with how awesome it feels!

whats the reason for the knee surgery? did it happen because of cycling?
@TheIndianCyclist Жыл бұрын
Not sure what caused it. Something (not sure what - a fall perhaps) caused some tissue damage which later calcified. As the ligaments rubbed over this calcified mass, more tissue was damaged leading to it getting larger - so cycling would certainly exacerbate it. Unfortunately out-patient techniques did not provide a permanent solution, and I had to have an arthroscopy instead. Kept me off the bike for a few months during recovery and initial diagnosis.
