It was the "right decision" from a strategical point of view. The SA was like a wild beast. They were useful to strike fear in the hearts of the party's enemies, but you could not really control them. They would have followed orders only as long they are in favor of the orders given. You know, after a revolution is done, the first ones you have to get rid of are the radical revolutionaries, in order to secure your leadership permanently.

Yes indeed my dear Watson, kinda like what Pablo Escobar did when he used the nazi's to storm the palace of justice siege, he used them and after that he got rid of them, insuring his power and that everyone that knew what actually happened (except his closest sicarios) was dead.

Politically savvy, yeah I'll give him that. But as a military officer, and in his personal life, he was far from it. No matter what side you were fighting on, ordering an attack on the Russian Caucasus in late fall, with winter fast approaching, was not a smart decision. Refusing to allow one of the few military geniuses you had on hand (Rommel) to assist your army currently stuck in the mud and snow isn't a great idea either. Finally, fighting a two-front war on top of helping Axis Italy with their own misadventures is a great way to stretch yourself too thin and risk enormous loss.
