I'm actually kind of surprised that one of the reasons for uniforms in prisons wasn't mentioned, profit. Private prisons and even government holding facilities are responsible for clothing, feeding, and maintaining prisoners for long periods of time. If they allow prisoners to wear their own clothes, laundry expenses go up. If you make all prisoners wear the same clothing, you can buy from the same manufacturer, get bulk deals, and laundry is quick and "efficient" since every piece of clothing is the same. Some companies who own private prisons even have prisoners make prison uniforms and can save money that way. Uniforms, like everything else in the prison system, is a means of cost saving and profit boosting depending on the facility you are at

That's similar as to why my country maintains a prison uniform. it prevents people from being targeted based on clothing. Another reason is that textiles used to be a major blue collar employer in my country, Both employers and prison reforms groups lobbied the government to have Prison uniforms produced within the prison system allowing inmates to learn job skills they needed on the outside. So various state governments spent a lot of money installing textile mills in certain prisons.

He also wrote about the use of the panopticon for controlling prisoners (through fear, IIRC).

Why did prisoners wear stripes Me an intellectual: so they wouldn’t be spotted
@richardjohnson87964 жыл бұрын
I actually grew up thinking it was so they'd stand out in daytime or nighttime. Black stands out during day, white during night, so the stripes are fully visible in both.

I lived in a small East Texas town in the 90’s where the local bar was across the street from the local jail. On Halloween one year, a prisoner got out and went to the bar (which had its usual costume party) in his orange jumpsuit . He was given drinks and everyone laughed at his awesome costume. How funny wearing an orange jumpsuit across the street from jail, hahaha! The police came and got him. Everyone laughed as he went back across the street to his cell realizing it wasn’t a costume.

I think casual clothes during Court/work/sleep and wear the stripped whenever they’re being moved or punished for breaking a rule in the prison, it’s human and it’s equally fair.
@littlebear15203 жыл бұрын
The reason behind the pink is that it keeps them from being less violent for some reason it's a calming color and they should have different clothes than the general population

A guy I know made a shock collar type GPS system, similar to the house arrest GPS. If tampered with it ejects the GPS into the leg in such a way that makes it difficult to remove. So that if they escape they will be forced to seek out medical attention all while being tracked down.
