The phrase was coined in 1914. It was believed that if the germans, the Kaiser and its allies could be defeated, agressive foreign policies would cease (the british believed that the germans and its allies were the cause of war). The scale and devastation of WW1 was supposed to dissuade anyone from waging war.

Happend often enough in daylight. If an attack fails, and you retreat, your artillery thinks your the enemy and lay down hellfire. If you attack and have success, but your trench doesn't know it or the runner was too slow, your artillery AND the enemy artillery lay down hellfire on you. If you successful defend a trench, but some retreated, the trench is considered fallen and your artillery last down hellfire

To be precise, they used the trench clubs not because they were out of ammunition, but simply because they were much more effective in close quaters combat inside the trenches than bolt action rifles
@davidarango4679
@davidarango4679 Жыл бұрын
That changed when the US entered the war in 1917. US soldiers began using shotguns when entering enemy trenches. It proved super effective at close quarters to clear out a trench, and extremely deadly at taking out several men at a time in a trench. So deadly in fact, that even Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II protested its use. Saying it was "barbaric" and "ungentlmanly warfare."

The paranoia suffered by the soldiers of WW1 was brilliantly depicted in the episode "Yellow", from the tv series "Tales from the Crypt" (although that episode was originally made as part of a movie that served as the pilot for a spin-off that was cancelled), in which a General, played by Kirk Douglas, tries at all costs to stop his son, played by Eric Douglas, from being a coward in the front

Depends on what part of WW2 you're talking about. Some of it was less brutal then WW1 but trench tactics were still used in the Italian campaign, and the bloodiest battle in history, Stalingrad was fought between the Nazi's and the Soviets and lasted for 5 months. There was also the Bataan death march in the Phillipines and some of the island campaigns in the Pacific like Okinawa and Iwo Jima were such bloodbaths that America decided to use a nuclear weapon rather than invade Japan and go through that again

On my mothers side there’s more after that. On that side, my great grandfather was also in WW2. My mum’s uncle was in Vietnam. So yeah. “The war to end all wars” didn’t end a single thing. That’s just my family, there are millions others all across the planet. With similar experiences. I hope this is relevant.

Yes indeed this is relevant. Not sure if I have any family who served in a world war, but my dad served in the Army for a short time, in the 80s I believe. The worst that could have happened to a soldier during the First World War? The alps. The front line in the Alps was the soldiers' worst nightmare. Imagine having to pull your cannon up to the neck of a mountain during a blizzard. Staying a month with 4 other people in the mountains during a blizzard. Winter in the Alps killed more soldiers than enemy bullets. Anyway, there were no shots at enemy positions. They were fired in such a way as to trigger a snow avalanche. One avalanche killed almost 10,000 people in 5 minutes. Most are still there today.

A lot worst happened. People drowned in that mud. They'd fall in and just sink down with the weight of their backpacks. Also it's where the saying "getting cold feet" comes from. This is not how the German trenches were... The allies set their trenches up expecting the war to take a few months, maybe a year or two. The Germans set them up expecting to be holding the line for a VERY long time so their trenches were designed with much more forethought and had very limited issues with mud. It was only on the newest sections where there would be issues with mud and those would be remedied fairly quickly considering the active combat right where the work is being done.

I've heard it said that WWI was the more brutal of the two due simply to it being a war where we had not yet completely mastered the rifle but we understood the bomb so it was a picture of mele combat surrounded by explosions that are heating air filled with bullets, sometimes all the way to the sky if there were dog fights overhead. And while not every situation was that exactly it was usually always atleast a cocktail of two or three of those things at a time.
