That changed when the US entered the war in 1917. US soldiers began using shotguns when entering enemy trenches. The worst that could have happened to a soldier during the First World War? The alps. The front line in the Alps was the soldiers' worst nightmare. Imagine having to pull your cannon up to the neck of a mountain during a blizzard. Staying a month with 4 other people in the mountains during a blizzard. Winter in the Alps killed more soldiers than enemy bullets. Anyway, there were no shots at enemy positions. They were fired in such a way as to trigger a snow avalanche. One avalanche killed almost 10,000 people in 5 minutes. Most are still there today.

This is not how the German trenches were... The allies set their trenches up expecting the war to take a few months, maybe a year or two. The Germans set them up expecting to be holding the line for a VERY long time so their trenches were designed with much more forethought and had very limited issues with mud. It was only on the newest sections where there would be issues with mud and those would be remedied fairly quickly considering the active combat right where the work is being done.

I've heard it said that WWI was the more brutal of the two due simply to it being a war where we had not yet completely mastered the rifle but we understood the bomb so it was a picture of mele combat surrounded by explosions that are heating air filled with bullets, sometimes all the way to the sky if there were dog fights overhead. And while not every situation was that exactly it was usually always atleast a cocktail of two or three of those things at a time.
