Ellen Kelly never worked her 88 acres, as she used her place to sell sly grog and as a place for prostitution. The Royal Commission found that the police acted properly regarding the Kelly's criminal behaviours. If you say the police were not very good, show us some evidence to support your view. ceej The spelling “gaol” was the accepted spelling in Australian English until the 1990’s when it was changed to “jail” as evidenced by the change in the Third Edition of the Macquarie Dictionary in 1997. The spelling “jail” is the most common spelling now in Australian English, However both are accepted - but “jail” is preferred. The Macquarie Dictionary goes on to add that, “gaol remains fossilised in the names of jails, as Berrima & Parramatta Gaol, and in some government usage”. However, the solution for state governments has been to rename these institutions as correctional centres. The spelling has also changed in British English to “jail” with gaol as a lowly placed variant.

Ned Kelly’s last words were ‘Such is life’. Many believe that the last utterance by Ned Kelly just before his hanging were three simple word, ‘Such is life’. Whether uttered with weary resignation or an acceptance of misfortune, the notion that the quote is attributed to Ned Kelly survives today (even inspiring one or two tattoos!) But what Ned Kelly actually said as his last words is uncertain. Some newspapers at the time certainly reported the words ‘Such is life’, while a reporter standing on the gaol floor wrote that Ned’s last words were, ‘Ah well! It’s come to this at last.’ But one of the closest persons to Ned on the gallows, the gaol warden, wrote in his diary that Kelly opened his mouth and mumbled something that he couldn’t hear. We will never know exactly what Ned’s last words were - such is life.

As an Australian, I've weighed the pros and cons of Ned Kelly, and every time it comes to an Australian Robin Hood. Ned Kelly is a hero to all of us here in Oz, moreso to the fact that corruption was at an all time high. When a man is pushed unequivocally, there are times when he will push back just the same. Ned Kelly is an antihero, and I love him for his stature and genius when it comes to the modern day Kevlar.

While he lived the high life from the proceeds of his criminal activities, his mother and sisters remained in poverty. Ned Kelly robbed extensively from poor settlers, often stealing their work horses in the dead of night, effectively sending many bankrupt. Ned Kelly's sisters were seen in Benalla dressed in rags.
