This video explains my process in the building, painting and weathering of Academy RAF Phantom II FGR.2 in 1/48 scale. I start the video by building the scale model kit using Tamiya and AK Interactive glues and Mr Hobby tools. The key to building the Academy RAF Phantom II FGR.2 in 1/48 scale is to carefully read the instructions and assemble, using the tutorial as a guide. Take care in assembling the scale model kit so the the parts fit accurately and align as intended, this is the easiest way of speeding up the build.
To paint the Academy RAF Phantom II FGR.2 in 1/48 scale it is best to use an airbrush. This video is designed to cover the airbrush basics so that you can see the thinning of paint and application onto the scale model kit. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used in this video along with Ak Interactive Real Colors, Tamiya Acrylics, Mr Hobby Lacquer and Alclad II Metal effect Lacquers. Thinning paint is very importan so I will explain how to do that using the correct thinners for each paint type.
Decals are applied with the aid of Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. This is a much more inetnse product than Micro Sol an Set solution and helps conform even the thickest decals onto the Academy RAF Phantom II FGR.2 in 1/48 scale model kit details.
The final part is the weathering using more AK Interactive weathering products as well as artists oil paints from Winsor & Newton and Abteilung 502, weathering washes from AMMO by Mig Jimenez and finally VMS Pigments. I start the weathering process using an enamel wash to bring out the panel lines on the scale model kit. Here I use oil washes from AMMO. To seal those in I use a clear acrylic coat from VMS Matte varnish. Further and more detailed weathering follows using artist oil paints which enable me to add streaks, grime and bleaching onto the model to give it a more aged, used and weathered effect. The VMS matte clearcoat varnish is airbrushed onto the Academy RAF Phantom II FGR.2 in 1/48 scale. This matte varnish will help the weathering process as the matte finish allows more oil paint to stain the model surface. Dust and mud weathering effects are created using VMS pigments to imitate the weathering on tyres and undercarriage/landing gear.
Final assembly of the Academy RAF Phantom II FGR.2 in 1/48 scale model kit is completed using VMS super glue. All of the final small parts and lights are added onto the model kit to complete the model build.

I'm a prop guy myself but the Phantom is iconic! It just yells "Give it your best shot!" Truly one of the most recognizable fuselages out there. In Vietnam they used to put the Transponders from the slower American Bombers on the Phantoms so the Enemy jets showed up and lost half their Airforce in a few minutes. While Tech is important, the human mind is still a great weapon. You have done a great job paying tribute to this beautiful jet! Yep, going to hang around awhile. I like ships. In 1968 when I had Measles and Pneumonia, I was 11. My parents bought me The SS France for Christmas.

Nice job. Wish you had chosen a f-4j UK scheme though. The fgr. 2 is a completely different aircraft to the f-4j in order to get its Rolls Royce engines to fit!

I'd done some research prior to the build like I always do, but hadn't read this deeply into it. It was only pointed out to me when I'd already got to the decals stage when it was too late to go back. Had to stick with it really but another 56mm wider on the intakes wasn't going to be that visible on a model in the scale. Looking at the references it had me fooled anyway. If you know you know...

First jobs I had as a airframe tech at St Athan was removal of arrester hook, jet blast panels the curved ones that shape the rear underside and the shingle panels the tapering side panels, these came off with large penny washers and 6 mm screws cask. Your weathering was just about spot on , all this area was textured sooty black especially the hook and fairings the exception was the underside of the hook block which would be scratched stainless steel where it slid on the runway sometimes. Also the engine panels underside look particularly effective rendition, well impressed

I grew up with the f4. At the time a very nice aircraft ! What's more I was best friends with boy two doors down that his dad had a great big part in McDonald Douglas ! ! ! F4 F15. F18 etc ! And on the side he'd built many rc aircraft from groun3 up. Very intelligent man. And so down to earth. ! The f4 has been one of my favorite aircraft of the jet era

Hello and welcome to to hobby then :) It's not entirely necessary to to have all of this equipment, nor is it necessary to complete a model. Starting cheaply and simply is a good method. The basic tools in my opinion would be; Snips, Tweezers, Sandpaper, Extra Thin Cement, Paint, Brushes and that's about it. All of the other stuff is to add effects like weathering and to get the decals to sit properly - but isn't entirely necessary if you don't want to. I'm glad to see that my videos are helping you out and I'll try to get as many techniques into my future videos to build on this :) Thanks for watching and good luck with your builds :)

Hi everyone. For the model stand I'm using please visit www.theinnernerd.com :) Thank you for watching the video, I hope you enjoyed it and stuck around for (most of) it. Had some fun with this one although it was my largest and longest project so far, mainly down to the fact that *I didn't quite realise the differences until I'd got the decals on and someone pointed out them all - then it was too late. I'd read that F4-Js were exported to the UK but then lost the thread of what happened after that until this later point when I'd got too far. The intakes were only 56mm a side wider than the J so would be barely visible on a kit of this size. I know the rear was different* but I would be interested to see if it would have been spotted if I hadn't shown or mentioned the box? Because looking at the references I used it had me fooled right up until it was pointed out elsewere. Maybe I should have stayed with an F4J from the RAF... It's definately got me more inspired to make some miniatures and get back to my old Warhammer 40K days, so who knows we might be seeing a Games Workshop tank appearing on here at some point! I can highly recommend the Model Stand. Ordered it on a Tuesday, it was delivered that Friday. Simple to Build, and makes life so much easier. Currently building an Airfix Phantom FG 1 in 1/72, and it is balanced perfectly. Makes the pylons Undercarriage etc a doddle to fit, and the model is stable when airbrushing.

Ageing beginner here! That was stunning, the Phantom is my favourite post war plane by far and my son purchased the Academy 1/48 "Jolly Roger" for me. Won't be touching that until I get rid of my nervousness.

I can recommend you masking fluid, if you want to attach canopy during painting. It holds part pretty good, and it's easily removable, so you don't scratch already coloured parts

The British Phantoms have a real unique look and even though yours isn't a rivet counter happy maker it looks awesome. I've been an avid modeller for over 35yrs and just recently got into jets, did prop stuff before. For me the Phantom is an animal unto itself but dam she's a mean lookin bird. I remember seeing them fly out of Dobbins and Hollywood A.F.B. back in the day. Had a buddy who's dad flew F4s and got to crawl all over them many times. In fact at the time they were still flying OV-1s, Hueys and Cobra in the air national guard. But nothing beat watching the F4 in full burner blast over ur head laying on the dike at the end of the runway.

THANK GOD! Someone finally shows how great the VMS product line is! I tell people to use it in forums and it'a like nobody knows about it or ever takes my advice. I love their flexy 5K and am using their varnishes as well. I just used clean slate last night. Their products just work as advertised and bail me out sometimes. I don't even see VMS talked about in SMCG much either. I think they believe I'm some VMS salesman. Your F-4 looks great by the way. Your skills are just very solid. I'm trying to use gloss gray for a base on my bright aluminum these days. It isn't as dark. Of course, on exhaust, it isn't as important. Great video. I enjoy you, Champion Scale Modelling, Plasmo, and Night Shift the most out of all the You Tube channels. Great work and effort.

Thank you. The method is relatively easy when you break it down, it's just the amount of layering when it comes to weathering in particular. The build up of effects that we see is many layers of various colours, streaks and stains which all work together to give that overall effect. Try one, then add one.
