Hobby Boss 1/48 Scale Model Aircraft by The Inner Nerd
Final instructional time lapse video of the full-build, paint and weathering of the 1/48 scale MIG-31 Foxhound by Hobby Boss as shown by The Inner Nerd
The first part of this video shows the use of Photo etch parts and scratch building techniques to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays.
The second part shows surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with modelling filler and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts. Also basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1200 & 1500" to prime the surface ready for painting.
The third part of the video demonstrates the black-basing technique used to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used at an operating pressure of 15PSI and a 0.15mm needle + nozzle during this process. Salt weathering is also used detailing how to create a worn look on specific areas of the model. Also included in this section is the jet exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect
Decals follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes and panel lines of the surface which you can see in the video.
Next is the weathering of the model. This is started using Abteilung 502 oil paints thinned to a wash consistency. Then used as panel line wash the oil is applied across the model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including unthinned Abteilung 502 oil paints to create streaking and water marks concludes weathering
The final part of the video explains the final assembly of small parts including landing gear, lights, antennas and canopy fitment as the model nears completion. All final assembly is completed with CA superglue.
Items Used Airbrush: Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm
Compressor: Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar)
Paint: Tamiya Acrylics thinned with Tamiya X-20A Thinner Brushes: Pure Sable Brush - Various Sizes
Glue: Tamiya Extra Thin Cement/Loctite 406 Superglue
Sanding: 3M 600p / 800p / 1200p / 2000p / 3000p sheets & sponges

The weathering and the detail work are incredible. This machine looks like it’s had a hardworking life on a Russian airfield, exposed to the elements, but still flying whenever it’s called on. It’s so realistic, if you showed this against a suitable background, I’m not sure I’d be able to tell if it was a model or not. Simply gobsmacked!

The Mirage F1, the Mirage 4 N, the Etendard, the Mirage 2000 and finally the Rafale. If you search on the web, you will find other strange planes like the North 2501 in other. For oils, are you using just dry cloth or cotton swab? Or do you use a little white spirit ?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 5 жыл бұрын
Firstly the model is clear coated with clear gloss varnish (I use Mr Color GX100 in three layers). Next I apply the oil wash and allow to dry until the oils are dry to the touch. It can be left longer and still come off if the clear coat is high-shine (polished). Next it to remove it with a dry paper towel and dry cotton buds to removed the desired amount of oils. If there are areas that need to be cleaned further then a white spirit dampened towel or bud will be sufficient to remove the more stubborn areas of oil. Remember the glossier the clear coat the easier it will come off. Matte clear coats will grab more oil and be harder to clean off making the wash more of a filter than panel line accent.

Whats the salt used for? Please let me know im just starting to get into modeling and im curious as to what it does
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 5 жыл бұрын
Hello and welcome to modelling! So your question... Salt is used as a temporary mask for the paint layers. So the base colour is painted (typically the base colour of the plane) The the salt is applied to create a random mask on top of this layer. The the second colour is applied (typically the base colour with added white/black or other colour) to create an ever-slightly different shade to the previous. Once removed, the salt had protected the layer 1st sprayed and reveals a random weathering pattern normally seen on carrier based aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat or F-18 Hornet. Salt weathering is normally used on the upper surfaces of the wings and spine of the aircraft as this is typically the areas with the largest flat surfaces which salty water can land and evaporate, causing this effect on the real aircraft. It's important to then spray a third layer of paint to harmonise the two layers together. This should be done with yet another mix of the original colour to create the final surface colour you want to achieve - I normally go Light-Dark-Light with the layering, but this depends on what you're trying to achieve. The final blending layer should be very thin as you don't want to hide all the work you've just done with the salt layers. I hope this helps and that my channel is useful in other ways as you progress in modelling! If you have any more questions just leave a comment and I'll happily reply The Inner Nerd

Question can you use clear glue for the glass on the controls in the cockpit?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd Жыл бұрын
You can use PVA and super glue for the canopy without the risk of the canopy glass fogging. You can use Extra thin cement but be careful, this can make the canopy fog if too much is applied so best keep to one of the other two to be safe. Thanks for watching :)
