A Message From the Future With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

What if we actually pulled off a Green New Deal? What would the future look like? The Intercept presents a film narrated by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and illustrated by Molly Crabapple.
Set a couple of decades from now, the film is a flat-out rejection of the idea that a dystopian future is a forgone conclusion. Instead, it offers a thought experiment: What if we decided not to drive off the climate cliff? What if we chose to radically change course and save both our habitat and ourselves?
We realized that the biggest obstacle to the kind of transformative change the Green New Deal envisions is overcoming the skepticism that humanity could ever pull off something at this scale and speed. That’s the message we’ve been hearing from the “serious” center for four months straight: that it’s too big, too ambitious, that our Twitter-addled brains are incapable of it, and that we are destined to just watch walruses fall to their deaths on Netflix until it’s too late.
This film flips the script. It’s about how, in the nick of time, a critical mass of humanity in the largest economy on earth came to believe that we were actually worth saving. Because, as Ocasio-Cortez says in the film, our future has not been written yet and “we can be whatever we have the courage to see.”

Thanks to "Living on Earth" Sept. 22 interview with Naomi Klein, I went and got her book On Fire and have read about half of it - Skipping to the end (as I often do) I learned about this video and just now watched it. Didn't even know who Ocasio-Cortez was, though I've seen her photo often - I've been so repelled by the divisiveness of Social Media I've turned off to it. We need hopeful, positive messages. We need a more robust imagination. But I believe the support for this is massive and growing. I also recommend The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible by Charles Eisenstein. And any of the Civil Conversations interviews conducted by Krista Tippett. And "YES" magazine. Nourish yourself and build your strength. We need to be there for this movement in any way we can.

It's cheaper to do it 9n the grand scale than the piecemeal bullshit we've been engaging in, but that's if looking at it with the factual perspective of natural and human resources, rather than the artifical and disconnected monetary system we've restricted ourselves by. We're using resources 3x faster than they're able to renew and the current economic philosophy says consuming even faster would be better, the more consumption the better, hence I say we can't afford NOT to afford it which means discarding this archaic economic philosophy for something that's based in the discoveries made in the last century rather than in spite of them.

Fine, that's a few villas, realestate and expensive paintings and jewellery that will rapidly depreciate in value because anyone with the wealth to appreciate those things to the tunes of millions or billions was hounded out of the country and isn't buying it anymore. That'll pay for maybe one year of this ambitious project. What next? Well then, they say, let's tax their businesses instead! Forgetting entirely of course that the only reason those businesses run at all is because they're profitable. Take away the profitability and you take away the reason the rich have to run said companies. They'll buy out or close shop. They don't NEED the money those businesses provide, they're already rich enough to stop making a single dollar today and still have their family and descendants taken care of for generations. Know who does need those businesses? The public. The working class. The government. US. Absolute nonsense. I'd be a lot more sympathetic to the idea of the green new deal if there was anything in it that had even a fly's chance in hell of being achievable. Cortez's only hope for it succeeding is by massacring the top .1 % that largely keep our current economy running and the blind belief that, if given the chance, everyone who lives in the country would immediately and forever become a bleeding heart socialist super hero willing and able to sacrifice their entire lives to the ideals it aspires to make reality. Have you looked around? There are preciously few people like that around. We venerate people like Gandhi and Mother Theresa for a reason - because there are so few people willing to sacrifice their entire existence for a higher cause or ideal that they're remarkable when they happen. For the green new deal to work, we'd have to all turn into that and I just can't see it happen. People might tell me I'm just a grumpy old pessimist. That I see the glass as half empty, but I'm actually pretty willing to give people a chance. I'm just not willing to buy into this fever dream bizarro reality that we'd have to exist in to make that "plan", and I'm being generous here, come to fruition. Having ideals is fine. Running a campaign for presidency on rainbows and pixie dust and promising your constituency the moon isn't.

In a new green deal stores should never be allowed to be open 24/ 7 day and night with their lights on burning fossil fuels. We often talk about banning plastic which is a good thing but we ignore the fact that these lights are also a contributor to Climate change. We also don't think about the employees who need time off to be with there families any more. How can we possibly care about our planet when we treat people this way? Working is important but so is time off. There are a lot of occupations who work Monday to Friday and this is not an issue. But we treat people in stores & restaurants , call centers like they aren't part of the human race. When you've never seen a female president a girl could feel that they can't do that since it's never been done before. So the saying is to explain how people feel when they've never seen themselves in that position. Now we have people fighting for that role so they can encourage people to think they can do it too. The saying isn't stupid to people who've experience it.
