That's a shallow understanding. Manufacturing in US is expensive by multi folds. There is also not enough labour here. I am writing this sitting in the US. American companies had made trillions by outsourcing Manufacturing. It is exactly same as why US IT jobs are outsourced to India. The problem was not outsourcing Manufacturing to other countries but it was transfer of technology and Chinese blatantly not following copyrights.

Sir 26:00 here cheapest Walmart shoes are $25. Fine shoes are $200. Yr point is correct, tariffs will affect currencies. The cost factor is not 4x in US. It's closer to 20x. Very uncompetitive to produce here. It's already 2 late 4 them do an adjustment. Could have worked pre-20. Now that ship has sailed. Only way whole reindustrialazation can work is this >> Weaken USD against other currencies>>> will reduce capital flows in the US >>> will lower stock markets n cause recession >>> will lower bond yields >>> can subsidize industries using lower rates. So it can work but they have to go thru a painful phase first n go thru a equities crash. Problem is nobody wants 2 take pain.

In addition he also used import duties as an instrument to accelerate US industrial development. By late 1890s America had surpassed Britain in total and per capita GDP involving both industrial and farm production.. During the first term of Trump no inflation occurred despite he put high import tariffs on China and other countries because China and other countries absorbed the difference by either decreasing the price or devaluation of their currencies. It is possible that same situation may not happen this time however. When one reads the comments of British who visited US in late 1800s they marveled at the automation and streamlining in steel production and use of machinery in the production of wooden items.
