@@Frostrazor I can see both. For anyone that has contemplated suicide, this is a somewhat comforting song... i.e. you aren't alone, lots of people feel like this. On the other hand it's kinda funny to see a regular person react to the words.

Listening to his hour long soliloquy at the Guitar place (forget where), he describes the band was in Denmark (due to cheapness of recording studio time) and everyone was deeply homesick. He describes he just poured all those emotions into the solos in this album , so that would translate well to Fade to Black.

This song literally saved my life more than once. Just knowing that there was someone else in the world that felt like I did was enough to keep me hanging on. It was like I was not alone when I listened to it on the days I was close to ending myself.

One simply could not script this stuff any better. Your enthusiasm and smile in your heart - I knew deep in side that smile was gonna begin to fade....and little by little you realized the depth of the meaning of this song. This song is precisely why I don't understand why so many people try to get reactioners new to Metallica to check out One as their first intro. This song is so much better to feel and heard the profound meaning and hardcore sound in those riffs. Jayy - consider for a moment how much in common rap and metal have - people think from the surface it's two different worlds and two different cultures, but back when rap was truly deep like Pac and Biggie and Dre, their songs were deep and meaningful and heavy and carried a profound message, and when you heard it, you really felt it. Metal heads listen to metal for the same reason. The lyrics are fkn deep and heavy. Both genres help people deal with their personal shit they go through. This song helped so many trouble youth deal with their negative emotions and realize that there are others out feeling as they do, and when those solo kick into drive, that anger and stress is just flooding out of the body just as you let the music take you. Both genres are respectively the most felt music to teens and young people and it's a combo of the profound lyrics and rhythm/bass. Metal adds one more layer with the angst of the guitars. Both are powerful as hell. I cannot count the number of days I came home from school or work and needed to blow off steam so as to not take it out on people. 20 minutes headbanging in the garage or in my car and swear to god its therapy as good as any on the planet.

Meaning of this song The lead singer of the band, James Hetfield, explained that his mother had a hand in helping him pay for an amplifier. Before this album was released his mother passed away and shortly after that amplifier was stolen. “Fade to Black” focuses on a person who has decided the life they are living is not worth the fight.

I have a challenge for you that I’d love for you to do on your own with this song you reacted to. I know you just heard it for your first time. I would love to see if you would listen to it at least once a week for about 4 weeks. I believe if you listen to it multiple times that your understanding and appreciation for it will grow 10 fold. It’s not a lot to ask for. I’m just wanting you to do it as an experiment and see if it truly does have that affect on you. This was a great reaction. Unfortunately I believe the subject of the song did end it all. The final verse being "Death greets me warm, now I will just say "goodbye." Goodbye." I always thought of that final brilliant guitar solo as the act itself fading off into black. However, I've also heard more than one person say over the years that this song may well have saved their lives. There's something about knowing you're not alone that seems to help.

It definitely saved my life. The finality of the final lyrics was a reminder that once you cross that line there's no turning back, no chance to redo or to see what could be.... Knowing that someone else felt that way and had the ability and the guts to express it and expose themselves like that to the world, made my pain just a bit more bearable.

Hi Jayy. Fade to Black is basically a suicide expressed through music. It is one of Metallica's greatest achievements and is amazing considering how young they were when they wrote it. It is such a powerful song. 'I was me but now he's gone' is such a great lyric. After he says goodbye the music perfectly encapsulates the protagonist dying and their spirit being released. The way Lars uses the drums to mimic fibrillation as the heart beats it's last into the final Fade to Black. Remarkable. James is one of the greatest songwriters and Kirk should be given more recognition for his solos. Please do more Metallica as they have so many great songs. Also Rammstein and Tool might blow your mind too! Really love your reactions as they always feel genuine and you connect with the songs emotionally. Look forward to your next one!🤘🤘

I've never heard anyone muse that Kirk doesn't get enough credit. Anyone I've every know always point to Kirk as one of the GOATs for sure. I think Lars is the one who gets too much unjustified hate and criticism.
@Omega-D
@Omega-D 3 жыл бұрын
🤔 I think you are totally right about Lars. Over the years I have often wondered why so many people say he can't play drums. To my ears his drumming adapts to fit the song unlike some metal drummers who just seem to go for speed and power. Lars has his own style in the same way that the likes of Moon/ Bonham/ Grohl/ Carey have. When people criticise Lars I often think of the adage that many shit bands have a brilliant drummer but there are no brilliant bands who have a shit drummer. As to Kirk I concede that within certain circles (Metalheads) his skill is celebrated but I don't know, I still feel that often in a wider sense his consistent jaw dropping solos and general contribution to Metallica often overlooked. No doubt lots of people will feel differently and that is fair enough. Kirk IS recognised as A GOAT without doubt but .......? I don't know maybe I just had another day of people I know generally running down Metal as 'all RAAAHHHHH with people screaming over it', and I had a moment. 🤔🤣🤣🤣 Pretty sure that has happened to us all at some point! 🤘🤘

The lead singer, James Hetfield, was touring and had just started this band when his mother was dying from cancer. She wanted to leave something with him, so used her money to buy him an extremely expensive wonderful set of amplifiers. After she had passed away, and while he was still grieving, some roadie stole them and it felt like he had just lost the last piece he had of her. That was why he wrote this song. The lyrics are quite profound and bittersweet.

Watching the smile fall from your face as you heard the lyrics is absolutely fitting. This song perfectly encapsulates the allure of death to those who are suicidal. It caused quite a stir when it came out as a lot of people took it to be encouraging suicide. It doesn't. Fade to Black is a way for people who are battling to express how they feel, and a way for the people who support them to understand the battle.

First time I heard this I was way too young to fully understand it. I did however develop a deep love for Metallica because of it. Thank you, that song is so deep.

At the time, they were roasted by the media for making a 'pro-suicide' song, but in the years since they have received thousands of letters from people who have thanked them for this song getting them through their dark times and pulling them away from suicide...

I have to admit that I sat with a loaded 9mm pistol on my lap in 1994, done in, finished, spent and more than ready to go, I put Fade To Black on and somewhere in the melody and vocals I changed my mind....funny what a song that "Glorifies" suicide can do to a 16 year old kid on a razors edge....

Fucking 80s media. Remember parents, it's everybody else's fault but your own that your kid is fucked up. God I hated it.

@@kindness81 me too. As crazy as it sounds, not necessarily the lyrics...they helped, but the outro solo is what has kept me here. How could I make the ultimate decision and never be able to hear this again. One of the most beautiful guitar solos ever written!
