Romesh ranganathan has tamil srilankan roots. Besides the fact that his parents didn,t speak to him, there,s the other complication that, during his childhood, he wouldn,t have been able to visit most tamil speaking parts of sri lanka because of the civil war that was going on between the ltte and the sri lankan army. My roots are in the indian part of tamil nadu. I still speak some tamil, because my parents spoke some tamil with me, we were able to visit the tamil speaking parts of india, and I was motivated to learn.

@@JV-ut4fi I agree totally. When I visit TamilNadu & speak in Tamil, many heads turn. They ask me how can I speak better Tamil, although I left 40 years ago. I am 68. Also in TamilNadu if u speak in good Tamil, u r being looked down as some1 without a good education. India is the only country where people mix up more english words in their vernacular language conversation. I hv lived in Japan and china and now in many countries of latinamerica for buz, all of them speak only in their tongue.. Romesh lives in England and speaks European. His parents lived in srilanka and speak Indian. I love his comedy but he has never been really clear about his actual mother tongue Tamil. Romesh is naturally funny. If you look into his eyes, it is there. He is a born stand up comic. He has the same talent that the American comic John Belushi had. John could look into a camera, and it was funny. He didn't even have to speak. Romesh has that same gift. His mother is hilarious too. I think Romesh from her side of their family. I really hope Romesh does a few Hollywood films, soon. He could be a comedy giant, like Eddie Murphy.

Its easy to distinguísh among different Spanish speaking LatinAmerican countries too. All serve the fundamental purpose of expressing ones thoughts to others.

Really relatable. My dad likes to camplain and to criticize me, but I'm the way I am because he fucked up as a father, being physically and emotionally absent. He doesn't like what he created, but has now the audacity to blame me while I suffered throug my whole adult life, and started to recover only recently. The coconut bit might be funny, but there is no better example to show the hypocracy of parents who fucked up, and refuse to own their mistakes.

I mean, it's your responsibility as a parent to pass down your language and culture to your kids. When they are small they might not show too much interest in it because they just want to play or do other stuff, but the older they get, the more they will appreciate the efforts you did to teach them their own cultural roots. You can't expect your kid to learn Sinhala on their own if they live abroad, plus there is little resources online to learn the language properly, so help your daughter out, I'm sure she will appreciate it.

I believe language chooses you instead of the other way around. I took my first real inspiration for writing from a lady who wrote a novel with heavy puritanical views and i, though barely sixteen at that time, could understand the language of 1800s, and while i suspect a quite a lot of guesswork involved at that point, i still would say i was feeling so related with the content and narrative. The reason why i love English language more is that it's chosen by outer elements to give this world a vast treasure of literature and culture. One cannot think that the USA has come to choose English over others by accident, and it's inevitable English speakers come to get the upper hand in guiding the cultural aspects of the entire world. There are people with ambitions to elevate a language of their preference to political gains and from what i gather in the experiments they try to pull off in midst of people who never really have a care for reading and writing it's turned out no less than a farce. A language belongs and tends to grow among people only there's a fine refined culture in affluence with the land. About being a coconut, now exactly what is a mother tongue? In India i believe English can be easily called as a mother tongue too, since mothers have a fancy to make their babies call them mommy. Hilarious but true. Jokes aside, i would say English is very well in the category where you can call it a mother tongue. English is infact the one real official language in the country, right?
@vickrant3523

You are right. The language that you speak originally is your mother tongue not your mother's tongue. Many people whose mother tongue is not english find the language far superior in expression of ideas than their own native languages. It's no surprise that it is the only language to have crossed one million words in usage

It's actually not funny that people forget their roots and don't know how to speak their mother tongue. Many of those who immigrate to other countries for a better life face this challenge of losing their cultural identity. While at home, the family speaks to the kids in the native language and teach them everything but once they turn 18 and leave home they communicate mostly in English with others and the touch with native language lessens gradually and after a point they start speaking English even to family members. This is the case in most immigrant families. All I said was the mother's worry is justified and same is felt by many immigrant families as well.

@@VK_BeautifulLife yeah I mean I find it funny, I’m British, it’s hard to explain exsacly why it’s funny. I think the reason the audience laughed is sort of his delivery, it’s super sarcastic and sorta hints that he’s annoyed by it but also doesn’t care overly much. Then there’s also the sort of depiction of his mother like the idea that he doesn’t understand what she’s saying and then it’s just the word “coconut” and sort of the exsageration of it all. I think those play into the joke the most, he was deliberately trying to be funny, that’s how he delivers jokes and I suppose if you’ve not grown up around that you can’t pick up on it.

People really bothered that a man who was literally born and raised in England his whole life doesn't speak Tamil? (My parents brought me up using both languages and I'm still not fluent). The real atrocity is all the desi guys in the motherland sending pervy messages to every woman in the U.K./U.S., hoping it'll score them a green card. Probably shouldn't complain about this guy when you're sending "Hello maaam show can i see more photos" to every girl on Facebook.

actually, Romesh is actually, and no idea why, doing a south INDIAN accent, not at all a Lankan accent. While both Sinhalese and Eelam Tamils migrated from India in ancient times, Lankans, whether Tamil or Sinhalese speaking, speak English with a very distinct accent that has a melodic lilt that almost sounds like a blend of South Indian and Carribean English......The Sinhalese version might be a tiny bit more melodic, as Sinhalese is itself quite melodic....

Just Jonathan Ross telling Romesh that he thought he was Indian is the fact that Brits only consider white people as British. Romesh is clearly English no matter what he looks like. At least that's what his mother wanted him to be, by not teaching him his mother tongue. Tamil actually has more speakers in India alone than several central European languages combined, is an official language in 3 countries, and has quite a huge movie industry. There's no way Romesh was not exposed to the language in one way or another. If he doesn't know the language, it means his parents went out of their way to prevent him from getting exposed to the language so he can be identified as English.

I eat so much food and never had an issue, regarding options. But I also don't go to mainstream places to eat, generally. Because they're fucking gross. ..and I grew up with an Italian / romanian dad taking me to his friend's restaurants where they made me legit food that tastes gorgeous. Also I'd rather give actual families etc money, vs places like McDonald's and so on. And as a result, I get to have many options and generally better health, whilst being in pleasant company etc.
