I love the kelpie, it's almost identical to the Scandinavian bäckahästen ("brook horse") and tales of the water being the nøkk when he appears in horse form. I think there was definitely some cultural exchange that happened when the Vikings settled in areas of Scotland and the Northern Isles - though where the legend of the creature originated from is unclear 🐎😍

Indeed. It's almost identical. I sat there going: "It sounds like a mix of bäckahästen and näcken". Makes me wonder which one was created first/which culture influenced the other. Impossible to find out today, I would think.

Kelpie were used in a book I read once where people race with Kelpie during the time of the year when they resurface. What made the book interesting was it was a tale between a girl who only have a regular horse but need the prize money and an expert who inherit his father's loyal Kelpie, which the girl won because of the stereotypical privilege kid who uses the most powerful and undispline kelpie that nearly ruin everything. You should cover Selkies though, because there's a movie where they're featured in "Song of the sea"

I really like your videos. I have been watching for a couple years now and I was wondering if you could do a video about Lithuanian folklore/mythology? Lithuanians were the last people to convert from paganism in Europe. We still celebrate some pagan holidays like užgavienės (pancake day). Anyways I heard stories about folklore creatures like the Aitvaras (Kite) and pinčiukas (little devil) and our extensive greek related pagan gods. I would love to hear your take on it.

This episode is especially fascinating to me all round because Celtic mythology is a major interest of mine and particularly the creatures and various sidhe that appear (less so the actual stories). I’ve never heard of Caorthannnach which both does and doesn’t surprise me since she seems to be specific to a single story/stories rather than having influence across various times and episodes (if you get what I mean? I almost don’t. It makes sense in my head). Leannan Sidhe was one of the first creatures to intrigue me . The version mentioned is similar to what I’ve read but differs also in the ending of those she inspires. The tales I’m familiar with agree that she chooses those that are already naturally gifted artistically and are merely struggling for recognition (for whatever reason) - this is what draws her. She then appears and seduces them into accepting her deal - she will be their muse but in return they will belong to her forevermore. She will then leave them and they will create and create the greatest works (in their field) in history and when they are at the height of their greatness and their success she will return for them and spirit them away to continue creating solely for her for eternity. Sometimes this takes the form of the artist just disappearing, sometimes this is through death and then their soul will instead be tied to her. I’ve read some suggestions that there is a link between Taliesin and Leannan Sidhe which makes more sense hearing the version mentioned in the video, given that Taliesin’s gift originated from Cerridwen’s brew (he drank from her cauldron - Leannan’s victim’s blood [which in some cultures is their actual essence of who they are] are deposited in her cauldron which is tied to the gifts she bestows, etc). I don’t believe I’ve ever heard an actual ‘out-clause’ with Leannan Sidhe. I have theories, personally, but have never heard/read anything explicitly. The Kelpie is another one that particularly fascinated me. The versions I’ve encountered - again - are slightly different (as pretty much all stories invariably are), however they are much more similar than the Leannan Sidhe tales. The Kelpie also shares some similarities between other creatures including Will’o’Wisps, Jenny Greenteeth and, surprisingly, Pegasus. The Kelpie appears to travellers who are lost and exhausted and encourages them to mount them as a (mostly) ordinary if friendly and intelligent horse. It leads them further astray without before carrying them below their home-body of water sometimes and lake/pond/river/creek and sometimes even a well (the specific types of choices of lair including wells are similar to stories of Jenny Greenteeth while the leading weary travellers astray are closer to Will’o’Wisps - differences being Jenny Greenteeth specifically preying on small children while Will’o’Wisps occasionally being legitimately helpful). Once a Kelpie is mounted, the rider is completely stuck to the Kelpie and entirely unable to escape. Similar to Pegasus however, the Kelpie (while not initially bridled) can be bridled and subdued by the rider (if they can do that while attached to the Kelpie’s back and before they reach the water) Once the Kelpie is bridled, the Kelpie becomes entirely docile and the one who attached the bridle has control for as long as they are holding it and so are able to dismount. The Kelpie (from my understanding) will then leave the person alone and they may escape. If they are unsuccessful, they will be dragged to the bottom of the water and devoured entirely leaving little to no remains behind. Not only is the requirement for attaching a bridle personally similar to the story of Pegasus and Bellerophon but also the way that once it is attached, the Kelpie/Pegasus becomes docile and obedient for their rider. So yeah, similarities across pantheons (they’re everywhere, particularly between the Celts and the Greeks - interesting because I personally would imagine that the Romans had more similarities while most actually occur between Celtic creatures/stories and stories specific to the Greeks - I’m unfamiliar with any equivalent Roman tales though I’d be interested to hear some.)

The current myth of the Druids has been gaining popularity. But, Ireland was already in the process of converting when he went there. He was not the first missionary there. Ireland was also one of the only, if not the only country that converted without being forced. You can read the Confessio of St. Patrick and he never mentions any of that. Also, that wasn't added to his legend until several hundred years after he died. He lived in the 5th Century and snakes were added to his legend in the 12th Century. The snake thing is believed to have started in the Pale, the area of Ireland controlled by the English around that time.

I'm into DnD, and when I did some googling, I came across a DnD monster called a "vampire muse", which I now see was inspired by the leanan sidhe. Strangely though, leanan sidhe also appear directly as a DnD monster, but now without the bit where they drain your blood and store some of it in a cauldron, instead they just leave you depressed. The vampire muse does have that blood cauldron, and is much more like what you described the leanan sidhe as in this video.

My great grandpa didn't help when he said the iron bars were trying to attack him when he was thrown in jail after they found his bartender (he owned a tavern) naked and insane in a swamp, and he shot someone for talking crap about him. He got sent to an asylum. We can't find his grave. 4 headstones with his name and birthday are in my state, but they all have different days/ years of death lmao. My family is special lmao

Feasgar Math! Hey I really enjoy your videos. Especially this one. I grew up with Irish and Scottish Gaelic culture. And I grew up on the water and miss the water. I joke around with my kids and tell them I am a selkie, and that their father hid my skin to prevent me from returning to the sea. I do not know if you have done a video on the Selkie yet but would love to see one.

If and when you and your lovely wife have children. You'll have so many kinds of folk and fairy tales to share with them, not to mention lots of material for their mythology and folk tales class homework assignments. I took a mythology class in highschool. Your content in this channel is definitely college level information!😉🧜🧚🧞🎓

The snake bit of the last of the video reminded me of my gameplay in AC: Valhalla during the Wrath of the Druids DLC, and legit remembered there was but only one--literally ONE snake in all of Ireland. Never would've guessed that they were making a joke about Ireland and their lack of snakes.

Tale Foundry did a list of Celtic creatures a few years ago. The Fomorian isn't just a monster in modern D&D, the original that inspired it can be found in Irish mythology and they're pretty terrifying; Also, from the Isle of Man comes the Nuckalavee, and that is a nightmare that will haunt you for quite some time.

I have also heard this about the Kelpie. It would also try and mimic the sound of someone drowning. Once you try and save the person, the tables will flip and now you're the one who's drowning and the Kelpie would jump out and pund you into the water and stand on your back and back of yourhead to make sure you don't get up and will get off of you once you are dead. It's something I heard. I'm not sure if I described another creture but I heard this about the Kelpie. I could be wrong but it's okay to be wrong.

I'm most familiar with the kelpie and know how to deal with it should the need arise, but it's the caorthannach that most terrifies me. Also, the muse fairy reminds me of the DS9 episode where (teenaged) Jake is being physically devoured by a similar (adult) alien. And here we all thought the showrunner was just being his usual creepy self. I mean, it could've been both.
