I think the bear line was beneficial for Elenor to truly understand Merida. Not only did they learn to truly understand each other, but Elenor also learned why Merida put so much effort in learning how to survive outside of royal life. She did almost kill herself with nightshade berries and worm-infested water.

1) I know it doesn’t really need to be said, but thank you Jon for being up front and honest with your mistake- especially for those of us like myself who also didn’t know you even made one and learned some cool facts anyways. I mean that genuinely and not in a sarcastic or “stroke his ego” way. I was also one of those people who truly had no clue about Brenda being removed from the project so you truly do learn something new everyday. 2) In regards to the trip, as a person who hates beer, has tried many different base types beers too since the saying is “there’s a beer out there for everyone”, and my body literally rejects it, does Ireland have anything else besides beer and whiskey to drink? Water maybe? I’m joking but also serious cause what are the other main drinks there? I feel like I won’t even be allowed off the plane if the locals knew I hate beer. 3) I’m shocked people disliked Brave- AT ALL. Even if you’re not a complete nerd that will bend over for magic, myths, and folklore, it’s just a good story that is beautifully animated and super enriched of the culture it’s based in. Sometimes a language barrier is the only way to communicate with someone; the language barrier *actually* *makes* / *go* *out* *of* *their* *way* to not only properly communicate, but understand and respect that person’s perceptive on the matter. Hell, there are people fluent in their native language/ multiple languages and still refuse to properly communicate or listen to their important people- and they actually have the option to go “what language do you need me to say it in for you to understand?” Merida is more nature based and respects the *actual* *land* she has to rule one day, so her mom turning into a bear ~or any animal really~ makes sense and levels Elinor to Merida’s playing field. Elinor sees that there is more to being a queen besides ruling over your subjects, the government, the laws, traditions and appearances; she literally saw the beauty of where history is made. Elinor literally needs her ability to speak and demand orders taken away so she can be brought down and listen to her daughter instead of always being above her. Plus there is a slight element and undertone about hunting vs over hunting and respecting nature as well with this transformation. Also it’s just a cute pun- when you think of an overly protective mom you think “mother bear” or “momma bear” which is true in actual nature because mother bears are ruthless in protecting their cubs and also as an idiom for extremely maternal mothers~ it’s a very cute play on words. For Merida, when her mother turns into a bear, she finally gets out of her own head and thinks about her mother for once. She learns to put someone else’s needs before her own which is part of a queen’s job. Because of the language barrier, Merida actually listens to her mom ~even when she has no clue what she’s trying to say~ which in turn helps her reflect on how wrong she was when she said her mother was never there for her. Now it’s her chance to return the favor and be there for her; she (the child) now gets to protect her mother after finally being grateful for all the years of protection her mom provided her but couldn’t see it since she was busy being selfish/focusing on the negatives. They realize their both right and both wrong and that two things can be true at once which enhances their bonding regardless of the mishaps where the spell is taking place. It’s a physical manifest of the “those who teach the most about humanity aren't always humans” quote by Donald L. Hicks. Also the animal/beast morphing just adds to the classic fairytale feeling since after all- that in and of itself is a major trope in some of the most well known and beloved fairytales: Beauty and the Beast, Princess of Swan Lake, Little Mermaid, Princess and the Frog, Brother Bear, and even more modern takes that have become classics like Shrek, Emperor’s New Groove, and Spirited Away to name a few. So again I’m really failing to see how Elinor turning into a bear ruins the movie when transformation is pretty much a staple in fairytale stories. I do agree there’s plenty of different ways it could have been done, but personally I love the bear touch.

Irish person here We really don’t care if you don’t like the taste of alcohol and a good amount of Irish people don’t like the taste of Guinness anyway, the storehouse tour is still a great place to visit and as for the other drinks there’s really nothing special outside of alcohol and don’t trust any pub that claims to sell “authentic Irish food” it’s gonna be a tourist trap
@AdamIshak01

@@marvelismylife946 thank you for actually responding! I wasn’t sure how true the drinking Irish stereotype is. Especially as someone who works in airport/ travel, a lot of the Irish and Scottish advertising besides the dances, castles and cliffs, are drinking and pubs- which usually means beer, whiskey and the occasi-onal Irish Coffee. There’s even a DL Poitiers list 🥲

I was surprised too! It wasn't until I read those comments that I learned there's a whole subsection of Brave fans who wanted to like it but ended up let down. I also watched a whole 50 minute video essay where some guy complains endlessly about how bad the bear plot is and while I think his argument is extremely flawed that's his opinion and it seems like a lot of people in his comments agreed. I think it kind of makes sense that someone who strives for perfection after being transformed into an animal, who is still of the mind set to be graceful will always be clumsy if she does not adhere to the rules of animal behavior, which what was happening to queen Elenore, she still thinks she can maintain "Human" perfection, but the end result is that no matter how many times she tries being graceful like a human winds up being clumsy as an animal. Your only graceful as an animal if you knew how animals move and behave, something the queen refused to learn.

I don't agree with you on everything and that's fine lol but I never thought you meant to be malicious and I see where you're coming from, we all make mistakes sometimes. I'm glad you acknowledged Brenda though and that's really all my original comment was about. I did learn from this video a little more about what happened behind the scenes. Thank you. I also hope Brenda's niece sees this video, I know she was in the previous comment section. I wonder what she would think. I think that maybe where WE (myself and the other commenters) were wrong is from another creators video on brave and the situation behind it. He framed it as the bear plot being less of Brenda's idea. Now, I wonder why he did that but anyway I do think her story would have had more of a punch than it already does and I don't hate the film by any means! I just wish she had been able to see it through. Even if it didn't turn out all that different, I still wonder what WOULD be different lol if that makes sense.
@JonSolo

Hey, we can't all agree on everything! I think that you worded your critique of my original video well and I appreciate you sharing your opinion because it motivated me to make this video even bigger and better than it would have been originally, so thank you :) As for that other KZbinr's video, I saw you and someone else discussing his video in the comments so I went and watched it myself! My biggest critique of it mirrors what you said: he spent 30 minutes ragging on the Bear plot, and blamed it almost entirely on Mark Andrews when it was Brenda's idea. The really weird thing is he even shows a clip where the producer Katherine Serafian (spelling?) says that the bear plot was developed in the earliest stages of the story so it seems like he contradicts his entire argument there? I kind of want to make a rebuttal video in defense of Brave but at this point it's probably moot lol. Regardless I agree with you that I still would love to see what direction Brenda would have taken the story! Anyway, thanks again for your original comment and for watching Part 2!

This ones a bit of a stretch. Apart from "wood" and "bear" I don't really think these two stories have anything linking them together. Brave's bear story could more easily be linked to the phrase "momma bear" and it would be a lot more fitting given that a major part of the conflict is the queen being a "momma bear" in the metaphorical sense then being turned into a literal momma bear so that the two of them could learn an important lesson. Also: mildly disappointed that you didn't even mention the potential inspiration for the clans sacred relics from the shorts. though they do seem to be more closely related to Irish mythology and you mainly dove into the Scottish inspirations in the last video.

I love Merida's dad in the movie he loves his daughter for who she is because she reminds him of himself & he isn't chauvinistic because his first-born child is a girl. Sure, he went onto have three other sons but Merida is his heart & soul besides his wife but at the same time he tries to appease both his wife & daughter & see things from both their perspective. He also jumps on any man who disrespects his daughter because she's a girl this was also shown in Once Upon A Time when we meet the live version of Merida for the first time. He tells Merida that she will be taught how to fight & other skills for battle by someone he has brought to his kingdom & that someone turns out to be Mulan. King Fergus must not have an issue with women being warriors & he was likely told of Mulan's skills & bravery that he had her come to his kingdom to help teach his daughter & heir this shows what a super cool, smart, chill, cunning & brave dad he is.

I loved this video. Keep up the good work. By the way, I think you should do a review Oliver twist.

I never understood why people think Brave is a bad movie. I can understand why people maybe don't like it, especially if they don't have that kind of relationship with their mom, but I don't get why people say it's bad or not cohesive. I feel like the plot makes a lot of sense, I love the humor, I love Scottish history and folklore, and I really relate with Merida. It's just sad that people don't recognize this movie and how good it actually is, at least in my opinion.

The mom really gave her son permission to make out with a bear and sat there and watched the whole time and then was only weirded out when she transitions back to being a human girl 💀

I would love to go to Ireland, but I don't know if I'll be alive a year from now... I'm old. Now, I'm kind of tough to get to laugh, but the comment about OSHA violation animating the make-out session got one out of me.

Can't wait for when you share about The African Cinderella story it's combination of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Hey even the Bible has a mirror Story that could begin with Once upon a Time! The Book of Esther!

In my opinion Brave is one of the best Disney movies made, i think that its better than both Frozen movies and rivals Tangled and Treasure Planet for my favourite movie made by Disney
