There are also about 10,000 Yazidi, 1,000 Mandeans, 80-120,000 Circassians in addition to the 600,000 Druze living in Syria who may be at risk of persecution and even genocide if fighting continues in Syria. And that's not counting the Christian population. Israel did the right thing, and it's not unprecedented. Winston Churchill did a very similar thing after the Fall of France in 1940. France at that time had a powerful navy with ships that could have been converted to German service, and Churchill knew that could only mean their use against the British navy. As France fell, the French ships were in port and before the French Vichy (who aligned with the Nazis) or Germans could take possession of them, Churchill ordered his fleet to open fire and destroy the ships. This was a very controversial decision because just days earlier, France had been an ally of Britain. But France had fallen to Germany, and Churchill had to make that decision or face those weapons in battle.
