The whole "Cinder needed to beat Pyrhha to be an established threat" is even funnier when you consider that she already beat Ozpin. The volume even establishes earlier how strong the headmasters could be with Ironwood. So Cinder's last big obstacle being some random student instead of Headmaster Oz, who was shoruded in so much mystery makes even less sense.

Pyrrha surviving also has the added benefit - from a writing standpoint - of thousands of Remnant citizens having seen her kill Penny live on TV. She was already a little famous so her then having seemingly killed another student during the Vytal Festival and that seeming to have been the catalyst for the Grim invasion would definitely make her a pariah. It would turn the theme of celebrity on its head; before, everyone thought she was too perfect and didn't really see her as a human being, but now people see her as a monster. She never gets to be just Pyrrha.

This also just fits better with the figures they are based on. Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, and Achilles was enraged and motivated by the death of his lover to fight. Jaune gets incinerated by Cinder (maybe even pretending to be Pyrrha like Patroclus pretended to be Achilles), and then Pyrrha is motivated by his death and her unresolved feelings about him to try and get revenge on Cinder. It was all right there.

And also additionally fits Pyrrha's secondary inspiration. Her name is an obvious play on Pyrrhic victory, which is widely understood as 'victory at the unacceptable cost'. This does kinda fit 'the cost is your death', sure, but even more so 'the cost is something that you value more than anything else'. Like, say, your best friend.

I think people forgot that RWBY doesn’t just make fairy tails inspired characters, it specifically makes inversions of them. Ruby is little red riding hood but she kills big bad wolves. Black is beauty that is also a beast and grown to hate somebody she loved. Ironwood and Lionheart are the tin man if he did loose his heart and the cowardly Lion if he wasn’t courageous deep down. Similarly, Jaune is Joan of arc that wasn’t burned but seeks vengeance for his love, while Pyrrha is Achilles that is burned instead of her love and puts his Patroclus in a tent instead.

I know going into fairy tale inspirations isn't _too_ important for early RWBY (but god is it important later on) but having the character based on _Joan of Arc_ become revenge-motivated after his best friend/love interest dies and having the character based on _Achilles_ become the postmortem inspiration to do good and inspire the heroes is kinda ironic huh. I know it's pretty unlikely given the age rating but it would have been _extremely_ cathartic to see Pyrrha lash Cinder's corpse to the back of a bullhead and fly it around Salem's castle like Achilles does to Hector.

Or hell, in the Haven fight have Pyrrha in a complete blind rage, focused solely on Cinder to the point of leaving herself open, screaming out in fury as she attacks with reckless abandon, with nothing on her mind except to tear Cinder apart. I feel like Jaune's death would be so much more effective than Pyrrha's for another reason. With Cinder vs Pyrrha, it was two equally strong opponents in an intense fight for survival. You see, Critter, the only problem with having team Rwby meet more of the Arc sisters in Rwby proper is that it would have been a great idea and incredible story writing. We all know Rt was deathly allergic to great ideas and good writing. Someone in WB probably brought this amazing idea into the boardroom and because Rt was SO allergic in fact, they died as a company. Having any sort of introspection, wholesome dialogue between team members, family relationships, or any kind of emotion beside gasping and standing around for entire scenes at a time was far too difficult beyond jaune being a broody crybaby mf. Having family speak to another member of the main cast?! You're asking too much. lol

And maybe, just like with the Fixing RWBY show, Pyrrha might have a small portion of Amber’s Fall Maiden powers inside her. This would have her Maiden powers lay dormant for a while and have it awaken in Volume 5’s big battle. And having Cinder realized that she was not powerful than she thought, because there was a piece of it missing would make her more power hungry than before. Having that said, now the two “Fall Maidens” would become enemies with different motivations to get the power they desired. Cinder wants to be the Fall Maiden for power, and Pyrrha needs to be the Fall Maiden to protect her friends, her family, and avenge Jaune.

I don't hate Jaune or his screen time in RWBY, but here's an enjoyable idea for this storyline: Jaune, uses his tactical skills and aura to support Pyrrha in battle despite her pleas for him to flee, promising he won't abandon her. Their teamwork holds promise, especially with news of Ruby's arrival. However, Cinder Fall soon overpowers them. She swats Pyrrha aside and fatally wounds Jaune, mocking his hero dreams as he bleeds out, with Ruby arriving just in time to see him die. Pyrrha is devastated. Jaune was her first true friend, who liked her for who she was, and his death shatters her. Consumed by grief, she isolates herself, determined to fight alone to prevent others from getting hurt. She uses her resources to travel to Haven Academy ahead of Team RWBY, arriving early in volume 4. She confronts Headmaster Lionheart, declaring herself the 'True Fall Maiden' and demanding help to find Cinder, whom she despises for Jaune's death. Lionheart, uneasy with Pyrrha's fury, assigns her dangerous missions, hoping they might kill her. But Pyrrha excels, her survival adding to his worries. Meanwhile, her reputation suffers. The public sees her as a nearly lethal competitor who almost killed Penny, unaware Penny was an android. Pyrrha's guilt over Jaune and Penny's deaths drives her to take on the most perilous missions, further tarnishing her image. Pyrrha's relentless presence pressures Lionheart, leading to the villains accelerating their plans. When Team RWBY finally arrives, they find Pyrrha changed-more brutal and unyielding. Ruby, Ren, and Nora work to reconnect with her, showing her she doesn't have to fight alone. Ruby, in particular, reaches out, absolving her of blame for Penny's fate and urging her to honor Jaune's memory by not throwing her life away, and being the hero that he wanted to be, and that means letting people in, and not letting grief and rage consume her. As they join her on missions, Team RWBY witnesses Pyrrha's transformation. Her fighting style is now ruthless and aggressive, her weapons upgraded with parts of Jaune's Crocea Mors.

I wish that they both lived because my headcannon (and to be honest is possibly what the writers may have been going for) was that when Pyrrha kissed Jaune he realised just how much he cared for her and that he had a girl who loved him for him, none of his ridiculous antics or his brave face just who he was and that's what upsets me. Also seeing people who saw her tear a girl apart no matter what she would have said they wouldn't believe her (her team obviously would) but she said about being put on a pedestal and people thinking that she was untouchable to then seeing her as a killer. They might think that what they saw before of her was all an act and her true colours were of a ruthless and unforgiving warrior

I did not watch the video yet, but here's my take on this. It should definitely have been Pyrrha. I hated the argument that the moment Pyrrha's plotline finished was when she kissed Jaune, hence why she is killed off. No, that's not how characters work. Or even how people work. Pyrrha throughout the show has been either the perfect golden girl or the love interest of Jaune, and while there certainly was something going for her when she explained to Jaune how isolated she was during Vol 2's dance scene, there basically was nothing else going for her. If Pyrrha lived on past the fall of Beacon, we could have seen how she would react now to many other things besides being displayed on top of a podium, heck if RT did allow her to get the other half of the maiden powers, we could have a character growth of her growing as a maiden to beat up Cinder, a total "If you did not have these powers, I would have beaten you back then" moment. Also why it should have been Jaune for me, it would have been a good way to end his character arc ngl. Guy wanted to be a huntsman to be a hero, he, even with all the odds against him, somehow enters Beacon, gets strong enough to enter the Vytal Festival, dies saving the literal celebrity huntress, and is then promptly praised as a hero. I'll remove this comment if Judgement Critter covers my topics. Aight finishing the video, I did not realize how much I was missing out on with this. I didn't expect you to cover Jaune's sisters as emotional bumps instead of RT randomly throwing mystery girl at us. Heck, going into even more rewriting territory, we could have had Jaune name drop a sister being a huntress herself, and then have team RWBY promptly meet up with said sister later on, with Pyrrha being noticeably distressed by how much Jaune's sister looks like him/ressembles an ideal version of him, or that she still blames herself for Jaune's death.

Finally, a Jaune dies AU that isn't just about being fed up with how he was written. Jaune is far from the only character with writing problems, so I never really got why he got singled out as a character to get rid of over rewriting to get better use out of him. I feel like more could've been done with the schools before things escalated to the point that they did, so expanding on that would likely change things a lot by the time the fall of Beacon happens. You could absolutely make a version where neither die. A lot of tragedy happens in other ways. One of the things you can do with both of them alive would be Pyrrha dealing with having just the faintest traces of the maiden powers and Cinder having it out for her over it. You could have conflict between how she and Jaune feel about the whole maiden and secrets situation and how that affects their team while they work through it. Also Pyrrha meeting Penny again.

Even more delicious AU thought to go with this: Pyrrha doesn't support locker Jaune and agrees to go fight Cinder together, showing that she trusts him, and how far he's actually come. They _actually_ pose a threat to Cinder not because of Pyrrha being the GOAT, but because they work together, all of Jaune's training pays off. Jaune gets in close, and Pyrrha provides long range support with the rifle, and using the environment with her magnetic semblance. Cinder could take either of them on their own easy with the maiden power, but has difficulty because of the newness of it and the teamwork. Ruby arrives from the run up the tower and lands. Cinder's two arrow attack already underway flickers in a third before Ruby can recover from her super hero landing, and the arrows fly, one for Pyrrha (deflected by her shield), one for Jaune, and one for a flat footed Ruby... who we zoom back to show an arrow embedded in both Jaune's shield in front of her... and Jaune's heart. Cue RWBY silver eye scream. Now Jaune gets his payoff (plus showing that competence, teamwork, and cooperation can make up for raw power), Ruby and Pyrrha have interesting character dynamics going forward, and all the wonderful things you talked about. Plus it shows how Cinder's goal of power can be dealt with by lesser powers working together, and the cracks in Salem's armor. She can't take over the world if all of Remnant stands against her regardless of how powerful she is, but rather has to turn them against each other, widen the cracks in their alliance instead.

Maybe during the Salem reveal Pyrrha ends up feeling kind of empathetic towards her and maybe even wonders if she would have done the same thing if their positions had been switched. Both felt sorrow after losing someone they were in love with and it feels completely unfair that they were taken from the world even though they were kind people, and if you wanted you could even create more similarities between them to drive home how alike they are. But then that would probably cause Pyrrha to take to much of the spotlight away from team Rwby, but a villain and a hero having similarities to each other is always interesting.

Edit I read some comments saw it pionted out that losing the guy she likes could still count as a Pyric Victory and was remined that it would perfectly fit their Joan of Arc and Achilles inspiration and am now completely convinced that this was the originally the plane and the Jaune became someone important darling so they changed plans.

I’ve actually been toying around with a concept for an Isekai AU where a guy from our world finds himself at Beacon at the beginning of V2. The idea was that things start going differently from the show around the halfway mark of V3, namely Weiss going to the finals instead of Yang, so he’s doing what he can to not only set the story back on track, but also save some folks who died. This unfortunately leads to him being the one to kill Penny and the rest of Team JNPR fighting and being slaughtered by Cinder instead of Pyrrha.

I've been saying this for years! Pyrrha had the potential for a much better story arc with Jaune's death than Jaune hand with hers.
@Mach56gss

I'm somewhat split. In my opinion, Jaune is a splendid character because he is so tragic. Everything he's done is to try and live up to Pyrrha's memory, to make up for her absence... but he's never been able to have a moment of redemption. It's been one painful defeat after another, so much so that when Jaune says "I couldn't even be the make-believe hero", you can't help but pity and grasp the depth of his despair. It's true: Jaune has done nothing but fail, despite all of his efforts, he hasn't really made any difference on his own. It's great storytelling and a very well done subversion of the 0-to-hero trope... and really, really frustrating. Because he takes all of this screentime - for NOTHING! I just don't know if that fits all that well in the sort of story RWBY is meant to be. It's a bit too grim and realistic - and if the writers try to hard to course-correct, Jaune's heroic moments will only feel more forced and trivialized. But for Pyrrha.... It wouldn't be the same if Pyrrha lived instead. She wouldn't waste our time. Being defeated by Cinder and Jaune dying as a result? She would be so much more driven, so much more consequential: She's not a character you can write off to the side as a hapless support character - she's a fighter through and through, and she'd take an active role in the story. It's that difference that makes this possibility all the more engaging and compelling, and a shame that we never got to see it and got stuck with Jaune himself. Her suffering would be all the more compelling as a perfect warrior brought low - and her redemption would actually occur. I love the idea of coming across multiple Jaune sisters during the journey and each of them contributing to the heroes' quest - it would almost be an extension and proof that Jaune's death had meaning - it gave these sisters the resolve and the need to aid RWBY, to recognize the friends that accepted Jaune for who he was and had helped him reach for something greater... had his life not been taken from him. I gotta push back on the "Jaune didn't know about Pyrrha" - but I think Pyrrha living still has great storytelling potential. From what I saw in Volume 3, Jaune had become much more mature about romance and pushing his feelings on others. When Pyrrha was depressed, he didn't make it about himself or his weakness at the tournament - he tried to help her. And this makes logical sense, because it was only since the dance in Volume 2 that Jaune actually started doing things for Pyrrha. It was finally a chance for Jaune to do what he always wanted - to help others. And in Volume 3 - he wanted to help Pyrrha, and it is was clear that he was doing his best not make it about him and whatever feelings he had. ...and really: "You were the first person to ever believe in me"? Holding hands? How he kissed her back? Based off of how he dramatic he was since Volume 3, and how present Pyrrha is as a part of him, I think it's fair to say he had feelings for her. That's not to say Pyrrha losing Jaune and her grief wouldn't be a lesser plot point. I think it's even greater because while Jaune knew Pyrrha had feelings for her, I don't think it was the same until Pyrrha kissed him. I think that if Jaune had died, Pyrrha would have only just realized - or never realized - that Jaune reciprocated her feelings. I'm not sure which is worse, losing someone who you knew had loved you, or losing someone without having the chance to confess - or before they had a chance to respond. Both are very compelling stories of loss. Finally, it's tough to say which death would be sadder. Jaune would die without the chance to be a hero, but in a sense, so did Pyrrha. She never really made the difference she could have made (and what RWBY will accomplish). Jaune is more pitiful, but Pyrrha's death is more tragic in the sense that people actually wanted her to have a story like Jaune's, have a chance to own the spotlight, and in dying it was made apparent that she would never have that chance - she would always just be a device for Jaune's story. I guess the best way of saying it is - Jaune's death would be sadder for the characters, who were actually given time to attach to Jaune, whereas Pyrrha's death is sadder to the audience because as opposed to RWBY + JNR, *we* were the ones who suffered the most grief having to come to terms with the fact that this incredibly beloved character was doomed by the narrative to never have a story, or a happy ending.

Let’s not also forget that Pyrrha was the first to find out about Jaune faking his transcripts to get into Beacon. It could have been a point of origin for her guilt she would feel after his death. She would be having thoughts like “I should have just reported him. He would hate me, but he would still be alive” “He was never going to be ready for this line of work” “I always follow the rules, so why did I break them for him”. You know just layer that guilt on thick.

I always hated Jaune because of the amount of screen time he got. All this time, I kept wondering why Jaune persisted narrative-wise and it greatly annoyed me. After watching this video, I realize it's because Jaune should have served his purpose a long time ago. Pyrrha's popularity shouldn't have been a reason to kill off. It was purely shock value. Jaune dying instead makes more sense thematically. Still shocking, but at least he'll die a hero, like how Joan of Arc was recognized as a saint after her death. On a personal note, I'd probably be glad to see him go because we wouldn't have to deal with his baggage screen-hogging anymore.

I was always under the impression that her eyes activated because of 1: Nearby GRIM, I've always been under the impression that is kind of a requirement 2: It isn't just Pyrrha dying but thousands of others, her city, and her school being overrun. The straw that broke the camels back so to say. 3: Pyrrha didn't have anywhere to go with her story, and this is a natural end to it. 4: Cinder needed to be established as an actual threat. And an unseen fight with the Headmaster who doesn't die isn't the finality that puts it in the back of your mind of how scary she is. 5: It also wouldn't be much fun watching some guy die in like 2 seconds before Ruby even gets to the elevator shaft. EDI: To add onto this my ideal solution to the problem would be to have both to go in and fight her. Maybe Juane slightly behind Pyrhaa.

If i could go further on this: Theres something that keeps being brought up in the show, and that is Jaune having a LOT of semblance power, to the point where hes basically a white mage on top of being a paladin in a pinch (even though we still have no effing clue what it is). The fan theory that phyrra could somehow be brought back in as a pawn would make far more sense for jaune, seeing as how hes a big enough battery to be of some use after a perceived death.
@Soapiesthorse
@Soapiesthorse 3 ай бұрын
I genuinely think they killed Pyrrha off because her semblance was way too strong for the show. The writers didn't know what to do so they figured to just perma-kill her. But you are completely correct in that it should have been Jaune that died. It would have made the show much more interesting, and if the writers wanted Pyrrha gone, they could have just had her go back home since she'd definitely need a mental break.

Since Pyrrha did get even the smallest amount of the Fall Maiden's power before she died. It be plot point in this AU idea that Pyrrha and Cinder would become mentally linked in someway. That way whenever the bad guys plan for something Pyrrha is able to tell the main cast and they can plan against it. Which in turn will make Salem leave Cinder out of 'the loop' which will push Cinder to become an independent threat. &/OR further push Pyrrha into keeping more secrets from the cast until its revealed that Cinder was actually spying on them thanks to their mental connection & have an early version of the 'no lies, no half truths' conversation a volume or 2 before the Ozpin one.

I think it would have to be well written on how Juane died instead of Pyrrha. I'm not a good writer, but way I see it is, that Juane manages to get the locker to fly up to were fight is. His months of been bullied he learned how to somewhat control them and called ruby while on route. While cinder dose not take his arrival seriously, they use their team work training and Jaune having faced cinder before are able to hold their own for abit, but cinder overpowers them. And while they separated, cinder drains more of the maiden power away from Phyrra just to make her suffer more. Before she can get off the killing blow, Jaune comes in and the white flash that happened last time in the forest happens again and cinder is seen screaming,seemingly falling to her death. This has exhausted Jaune, but he looks into her eyes and says " Phyrra... I..." before getting stabbed from behind through the chest just as rwby got there to see it all. Then silver eyes happens. Think the dynamic of Ruby and Phyrra would be very tense. Ruby seeing Phyrra as responsible for death of 2 of her best friends and phyrra feeling that guilt. Think there would be alot of Nora thing to get them to be friends but rei wanting them to come together naturally when they ready. Think Phyrra would be more sympathy to Oscar too as while she chose to have maiden powers, she understands the burden being put on him. I do think it be interesting to have phyrra kill penny again and dealing with that in Jaune's place. And in ever after the rusty knight did look like Juane too. Just a reminder of the hero he want and could have been.

Not only would it have hit WAY harder since we got a lot more screen time with Jaune, but we could've gotten a lot more interesting development with Pyrrha Pyrrha could've gone through something similar to what Katara went through in The Southern Raiders, a character who's usually kind and motherly become more serious and aggressive as they let their desire for revenge towards the person who killed a love consume them. But while Katara's arc lasted one episode, Pyrrha's could've lasted munch longer in Volume 4 to 5

I think people forgot that RWBY doesn’t just make fairy tails inspired characters, it specifically makes inversions of them. Ruby is little red riding hood but she kills big bad wolves. Black is beauty that is also a beast and grew to hate somebody she loved.

Judgmental Critter back at it again with another AU idea that's way more interesting than what we had canonically in RWBY. As many have pointed out, not only does it just make more narrative sense to keep Pyrrha, (because she has more plotlines going for her like being the future maiden and having unfinished business with Cinder) but also can you imagine the strained relationship and long lasting conflict she'd have with Ruby?? Ruby watching first hand at Pyrrha (accidentally) killing/indirectly failing to save her two best friends. First with Penny, AND THEN in the battle of Beacon, she sees Jaune killed by Cinder, meaning that Pyrrha was not able to protect him. That could've brung so many amazing stakes personal conflicts between Ruby and Pyrrha, something that could develop both their relationship and Ruby's entire character in the long run. Because while people have also given warranted criticism that it was weird that Ruby reacted so heavily to Pyrrha's death during and after the event, you wouldn't even need to justify Ruby unlocking her sliver eyes when facing Penny's death AND Jaune's death back to back. ESPECIALLY WITH JAUNE because that's the first person she talked to at Beacon AND someone she could relate with as inexperienced leaders, it wouldn't even need an explanation just GAHHH THE POTENTIAL!

Much like with Pyrrha, it's the headcanon for the character that we like, and a heartbroken knight is a great concept. Even in the show proper, we need more of the Arc Sisters. The two you portrayed are easily recognizable from the family photo with their personalities and color palettes. Thank you for more of your wonderful content. Have an awesome day! P.s. Wait, what are the age-gapes between the Arc siblings? I honestly thought Saphron was the Mother before counting the sisters. We also get a set of twins, a rarity in RWBY, but that only helps the math a little.

I like this “rewrite” of yours and it would make much more sense for not only the entire cast, but for Pyrrha as a whole. I also like the idea of Pyrrha living instead of Jaune and how to see her trying to overcome the guilt she has over Jaune's death and that Jaune's sister have more screen time and interact more with the cast rather than what we got. Keep up the good work!

Also, you could keep some of the impact of Pyrrha losing to Cinder anyway. Her and Jaune both fight Cinder and lose, either together or one after the other. Maybe they’re really in-sync, maybe he’s getting in the way, maybe he’s just watching at first because he isn’t confident enough, or maybe she sends him away and it takes most of the battle to get back to her. Depends on what flavor of angst you want. Pyrrha gets knocked down because Cinder was focus firing the biggest threat, and now she’s close to being killed. Jaune jumps in to distract Cinder and fight her himself. Mixing in stuff like him using Pyrrha’s lessons or making moves that are recognizably adapted from her could show how much he’s grown in his last hoorah. Cinder’s seen him around school, so maybe she tries to make him feel inadequate during the fight and there are some cool moments where you think, just for a moment, that he can prove her wrong. That with Pyrrha weakening her, Jaune can finish her off. Only to have that hope cut short when she starts taking him seriously and bodies him right before Ruby arrives. It gives him a chance to actually make a difference before his death by saving Pyrrha, and keeps the feeling of hopelessness because it wasn’t just Jaune who lost, it was both of them. Pyrrha has been beaten and he knows she’s better than him, but this is his only chance to save the people he cares about. He held her off until the cavalry got there and that’s genuinely a hero’s death. It’s no longer “Ruby got there too late” but “Jaune kept Cinder there long enough.” It’s not the fast Ruby not being fast enough, but who we thought was the weak Jaune being strong enough. A bittersweet death where he’s grown, he’s useful, and he’s saved the day. It feels like an actual Pyrrhic victory when Cinder goes down instead of just a loss.

At the statue scene, we could have Pyrrha giving the gear back to the sister and finally start moving on.

I just wish we had seen more from Pyrrha. She feels the most human out of all of the characters, and compared to Jaune, she's much more interesting. You're definitely right about the fandom loving the idea of her rather than who she actually is, because she was a character absolutely filled with untapped potential. Being the strongest fighter, you can imagine the amount of guilt she'd be carrying after Jaune's death. I imagine it to be a similar situation to Jaune and his outburst in Volume 9, "I was the only one that could do it." Pyrrha feeling responsible for his death would have opened doors for a lot of character development. Being the only one truly capable of saving Jaune, yet still being forced to watch him die would have been a lot more intriguing than Jaune's situation.

I... never thought about Jaune being the one to die but it makes a ton of sense. I also wanted to see more of his sisters! Especially with the whole "all of my family are warriors" thing he had going on. In the early days, I thought he'd have a similar situation to Weiss as being the runt amongst golden child huntresses.

There's a bittersweetness to the idea that Jaune becomes a martyr. I love the idea of him becoming the "saviour of Beacon" and given plaques and statues. Another symbol of hope (or Beacon...harhar). And his sisters sadly remarking that they always thought of him as worthy/heroic through his kindness.

Also I just feel that Pyrrha had more importance to the plot over Janue. She sense of Duty over what she really wants. looking for a friend who look pass her celebrity status. While Janue became a 1 to 2 note character when each additional volume passes. Pyrrha has more emotional impact with Ozma deceptions than Jaune. Sorry, I'm such a Pyrrha fan I got carried away

This is exactly why I want a RWBY AU reboot. Get another studio to tackle the potential of this world and its characters. Ice Queendom would've been better if its animation hadn't crashed and burned AND its story wasn't so rushed.
