Camelot, Act 1 Scenes 9-11 ("Before I Gaze at You Again", 1960) - Julie Andrews, Richard Burton, Robert Goulet
--------------------------
[...]
Guinevere is torn between her new love for Lancelot and her love and loyalty for Arthur, and wishes Lancelot would leave Camelot ("Before I Gaze at You Again"). By some unfortunate twist of fate, Lancelot, in spite of his boasts that he is immune to pleasures of the flesh, is also madly in love with Guinevere and is similarly torn by the conflict between this love and his devotion to Arthur.
Arthur makes Lancelot a Knight of the Round Table.
As it happens, the shrewd King Arthur guesses that Lancelot and Guinevere have feelings for each other, but hopes it will blow over, as he does not wish to upset the tranquility of Camelot. He soliloquizes to his sword Excalibur, that they will rise to the challenges they will all face, together.

I didn't know this existed! I saw the Richard Harris movie recently and just LONGED to hear those lines coming out of Richard Burton's mouth, especially the "This is the time of King Arthur" speech. And yes, he does it better than anyone ever could.

Thanks for adding the script! Its a smart thing to do. Also, Whomever did the original recording, thank you! So many people owe so much for your one evening decision to take, probably, a large recorder into the theater hidden from the managers! LOL.

The device must have been rather obvious in 1960. But I’m happy someone did do it.

I have a copy of the original printed version of the script of Camelot, which I read many, many years ago. I was deeply ,moved by Arthur's speech that closes Act One and wished I could have heard Richard Burton speaking it. Now, after waiting six decades, I have been wiping tears from my eyes for the past few minutes after listening to it. He is as good as I always hoped and imagined.

Thank you so much! I've watched all of your Camelot videos...it must have been incredible to watch this cast in person. Thank you for putting together sections of the audio and videos with the songs, with the script! I keep coming back to them, especially this one and "what do the simple folk do."

How great is this!! This is a real treasure!! This is where you can see once and for all why the film failed. It changed the tone too much. In the show you get the feeling that the love between Guinevere and Lancelot could be chaste. If you can find some full color shots from the original production check them out. It was so beautiful to look at.

I enjoy your comments. Maybe I just have a dirty mind but to me Lancelot being in her bed chamber and brushing her hair is a way of indicating that they have been intimate. Also, after watching this video several times I just noticed Julie's face at the time of 10:20. For me, the look of shame on her face is so revealing. It is one second. What an actress!! Thanks again for your comments.

Julie wrote in her first memoir that Guinevere and Lancelot haven't been "intimate" indeed. They love Arthur, too. In fact, all of them three want to keep balance and make the things better, but they are trapped at last……That strengthen the tragedy ending of Camelot.
@danielsmith9814

Yes Julie Andrews wrote that in her memoir but she also stated that she thought it was wrong to remain chaise and that Guinevere and Lancelot should have consummated their relationship to make them have a reason to actually feel guilty.

A bit of trivia on this song: Julie was handed this song overnight as a scene change and she had it ready to go the next morning as good as ever.

Dear Archive, thank you for your wonderful job👍! I have listened to the recording of "I loved you once in silence" in KZbin and I bet you have listened to it, too. Could you remove the background noises and post it like this✨? My gratitude is beyond description💝…

The point of spending hours compiling these videos are not to have a recorded version the songs, but something that makes it easier for us to imagine what the stage production would have looked like. Background noise and all.

Honestly, I really very appreciate for your wonderful job👍✨…… God bless you🙏!

为了缩减Camelot的时间,这首歌后来在正式演出一段时间之后被删了。而这些现场录音据说是在1961年理查德•伯顿的最后一场演出时录的,那么就不太可能有这首歌,可能已经被删了😔……

Arthur's speech at the end of ACT I is a testament to Richard Burton's GREATNESS as an actor. Doing the same speech, Richard Harris seems like an amateur.
