Agreed; the old man was pleased with everything, but when his children came out, he simply beamed.

You can read his lips saying”son of a bitch” when his sons are announced. Pure amazement and joy.

This brought tears to my eyes. His innovative jazz style, consistent life with family friends and associates were inspirational. There’s hardly a piece he wrote I don’t love. My youth echos with that off beat beat and sway. A good man. A great musician. A gift rarely seen. My his rest be sweet.

My favorite moment comes at 3:30, when Brubeck's four sons are introduced to the stage at the Kennedy Center, and Dave can be seen clearly muttering "son of a bitch!"

If anyone wonders what a jazz cello sounds like, here's Exhibit A. The "Happy Birthday" bit at the end was for Dave Brubeck---The actual date of the performance was Dec. 6, 2009, Brubeck's 89th birthday. Brubeck would pass away three years later on Dec 5, 2012---one day before his 92nd birthday.

Long ago my brother raved about seeing Brubeck when he was touring college campuses. My brother talked about one piece where drummer Joe Morello played about a 20 minute solo and the other three simply walked off and took a break. Dave Brubeck was the person who brought jazz into mainstream American music. I hope people remember that. While my brother saw him earlier in his career, I was fortunate to see him near the end of his career. He seemed a bit feeble coming onto the stage at his older age - until he started playing. Always first rate. He said only one song was sort of hard for him to play and that was "London Flat, London Sharp" because one hand was playing in a key with many flats and the other hand in a key with many sharps. He said it made his brain hurt (which is doubtful).

This is without a doubt my favorite year (2009) of all the Kennedy Center Honors broadcasts I have seen! Between this segment and the utterly brilliant introduction of Bruce Springsteen delivered by Jon Stewart that same evening.... I have no further words that could do it justice! In the hopes that someone high up at the Kennedy Center sees my comment, I would like to plead again for the release of a complete DVD Box Set of the Kennedy Center Honors broadcasts! I know that a very substantial market exists for just such an item!

Take Five was the first jazz song I could remember the title to. I've added a few more to that list since then, but Brubeck's jazz is a rainy day in late October/ early November and that's what I always look forward to.

Favorite moment: Son of a b****m, Brubeck says as his sons are revealed to being there. I bet they told him lame excuses for why they could not attend the ceremony and show. Genius. That fruit does not fall far from the tree. I also love that they all played different instruments, although they could all probably play all the instruments.

The moment at 3:30 becomes sweeter and funnier if you know the backstory. In a piece one of Dave's sons wrote after his father's death, he explained that he and his three brothers had told their dad they would not be able to attend Dave's receiving the Kennedy Center Honors. Dave was obviously very upset and sad at the news, but as it turns out, it was a planned setup and surprise by the sons. They were not only attending but performing for the tribute. That explains Dave's "son of a bitch" moment when his sons were introduced.

Nos Estados Unidos, costuma-se homenagear artistas. Tom Jobim, por exemplo, recebeu algumas homenagens antes de falecer. Mas, aqui no Brasil não existe esse reconhecimento.

Watching Mr. Brubeck mouthing "SON OF A BITCH!" is one of the best parts. Read somewhere that he was kind of crossed none of his sons were going to be with him on the tribute, on the seats, because the plan was that they would be performers that night, lol
