@TeamFlamingStones
@TeamFlamingStones 9 жыл бұрын
hockeygoal101 I used to think that too, before I started studying music. Electronic music opens up a world of possibilities for interesting sounds, yet most modern pop only use it to copy others' sounds and apply extremely rigid beats. Because that genre isn't about creativity at the core. When you look back at Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc. you get the impression that everything used to be better, but that's simply because we've forgotten all those pure-pop bands at the time. When people say that we should stop using machines - or rather computers, because I assume that you don't wish us to go back to strictly acoustic music with no recording or mixing whatsoever, it's mainly because that seems like the only possible culprit that explains the lack of good music. The real answer to this problem is simply this: Pop is available everywhere, but to find music that actually can mean something to you, it's necessary to actually spend some effort looking for it.
@StopwatchRobert
@StopwatchRobert 9 жыл бұрын
TeamFlamingStones This is a good response. Hip hop and electronic music are every bit as musical as any genre, and certainly don't need to sound generic; in fact, the ability to use any sound you want opens up a lot more possibilities than guitar, bass, drums and piano. The issue lies with the people making the music, not the tools used to make it, and this doesn't even apply to all pop.
@TeamFlamingStones
@TeamFlamingStones 9 жыл бұрын
Mockingbirch Of course it doesn't apply to all pop, because our genre categorizations aren't nearly accurate or objective enough. The way I think about pop is that it consists of phases, where no songs stay popular for more than a couple of years, and where they only affect the progression of music as a group. With that definition, Michael Jackson and the Beatles doesn't fit in though, so it's really quite subjective. And then there's the tiny little remark I have that both the guitar and bass are electronic instruments, though not digital, and that the range of instruments used in say impressionist, neoromantic and expressionist music allowed for some really intricate musical landscapes. You could say that electronic/ digital music gives you more control over the sounds, yet we're stil at the point where a synth can't reproduce a violin sound perfectly, despite being able to have a tremolo effect that follows a LFO modulated pattern based on its original waveform. I argue that they suppliment each other more than anything.

Morti 1 Some pop songs are pretty nice anyway, so I dunno if it's worth ignoring them entirely... But, of course, I wouldn't enjoy the samey stuff as much as the more interesting and new stuff... It's kinda the same with Video games and movies too ^_^;;
@NorbertSD
@NorbertSD 9 жыл бұрын
Morti 1 If you're not used to something, you have a tendency to think it all sounds the same. I listen to pop, and I don't think it sounds the same at all. What kind of music do you like to listen to?
@mortyjames5897
@mortyjames5897 9 жыл бұрын
P0CK3TB00K it sounds the same because they literally copy melodies from each other, riffs, etc. They just mix it differently and edit it just enough so that they won't get sued for it. I actually saw a documentary about this - it really happens. I listen to a lot of genres of music: blues, hip hop, rock, classical, electronic. It doesn't matter as long as its good. The only exception is pop music which i really don't like. Which artists do you listen to?
@NorbertSD
@NorbertSD 9 жыл бұрын
Morti 1 I like pop because it's catchy. That's what I look for in a song. It's not bad--it's entertainment. So what if it has repetitive lyrics and riffs and has lyrics about love and dancing? Music from the 80's was like that too! It's only thanks to the Internet where people have a place to rant on and on about how horrible they think pop music is, and shove their opinions down the throats of anyone who doesn't think the same way. Styles come and go--it's always been that way. It's been that way for pretty much as long as the music industry has existed. Maybe we're in a trend that you don't like, but hey, the world doesn't revolve around you. There are other people here with opinions as well. Whatever documentary you allegedly watched gave you the wrong impression.

You can listen to underground shit if you want, it's good, but when you turn into a special snowflake and constantly have to reassure your music taste is better and assert your dominance in the music consumer base by bashing pop songs no one likes. Like you're doing now.

The truth, wow. Sadly, so often the name on the album should be the producer who then thanks the musicians for helping out because sadly, it's become an industry where producers just want to pre-mix and pretend they're Tiesto with songs that haven't even been written yet. I know there's a place for that but it shouldn't crowd out the many genuine musicians who deserve better than to be over-produced into something so inauthentic.

Katy perry is actually pretty awesome in my opinion. Her songs are down to earth and really nice. She is legendary. Her songs all have different feels and vibes to them and they are not about the same old things. She raises the bar every album and every single, her sound is unique. And her music is really personal and beautiful.

While it may be true that after X songs most of the mainstream musicians lack originality nowadays, I have to say that it is not that easy making a catchy and original song anymore. I used to criticize pop singers and electro music writers a lot, but I just bought myself cubase 8 and some hardware and I have to say that it is very hard to produce something orighinal, yet anything at all. This is why when I see videos about "this music is so unoriginal" and "not even made by real musicians", well, it makes me cringe a littel, because I sometimes spend two weeks - or even a month - of hard work on a song until I obtain something "hearable", typing on both my real and MIDI instruments, singing, synthetising, mixing, etc. And it is not an easy science. I actually find it easier to explain the cohomology theory than to use all this stuff, on which I spend a hell of a lot more time. It is hard to produce a creative, unique sound with a computer, and it is as hard to create music with a DAW that it is with instruments. People take things for granted nowadays (not only in music) and they think musicians and producers can just pooop unique songs as easy as a baker bakes bread. But it is not the case. This is why, and despite the fact that I agree a few people are indeed overrated for the work they seem to produce, I have respect for all kind of musicians, in every style of music.

kschmadeka I don't make youtube videos, and if you knew anything about strip clubs you'd know filming isn't allowed in them. If I said I was a waitress would I need to 'prove' I'm a waitress? It's not that uncommon a job you know.

Gvf77x Calm yourself, I'm not trolling you, just giving you a mildly bad time! In point of fact I have worked in strip clubs (at the door). If you claim to be in a glamour profession you kind of do have to prove it, and there would be nothing wrong with making a quick pole dancing video suitable for youtube after closing. If you post one I'll send you a tip. :)
