Seeing Gollum especially hurts me, as someone who has seen and played many of Daedalic Entertainments early games. Deponia is one of my all time favourite game series out there, it is full of wit and humor and it has a great, timeless art style. Occasionally I still go back and rewatch it on KZbin when I'm bored. God knows what came over Daedalic Entertainment to make Gollum. It is the complete opposite of what they are great at doing! They are known for their great point and click style adventure games, that is what they have ample experience with and that is what they know to do best - and then they just suddenly decide to create a 3D plattformer? On one of the largest franchises in the world that, just as the cherry on top, is already extremely pissed off at how Amazon has been handling the franchise up till now and is therefore guaranteed to be extre critical? What in the world were they thinking?! Who made that decision? Honestly to me this feels like some executive put them under contract and only afterwards revealed that they were to make a 3D plattformer game, because that's what's popular with the kids these days. And then when the entire thing, expectedly, came crashing down they dumped the entire blame on Daedalic Entertainment. Or maybe I'm just trying to cope with the fact that one of my favouite indie companies from back then would make a product as terrible as this. Anyway, I hope that, if the company survives this disaster, they learn from it and stick to what they do well in the future.

As a German I feel compelled to tell the story of how Daedalic has already been dead, when starting to develop Gollum. There once were two young men with a passion for story-driven games, a passion for point and click adventures in particular. They founded Daedalic and created some beautiful pieces of work. The German industry noticed and Daedalic was bought by a publishing house mostly known for children's books. German officials also started subsidizing Daedalic to grow the domestic video game market. And this was how the best modern point and click adventure studio became a publisher for lesser games and projects too big to handle. One of its founders, the intelligent and creative one, went his own way, since he could not handle how the very soul of the company was sold, so that investors would bite. Daedalic was already creatively bankrupt and only a shell of its former self, when they started developing Gollum. The publishing house even sold them to some video game company in France, which had only published one mediocre final fantasy rip-off then. Under these circumstances it should've been clear Gollum would be a disaster, but the German video game journalists, who could've told us about it, probably didn't want to proactively doom one of the possibly largest (when judging by IP) German video game releases ever.

My first ever preorder experience was with Need For Speed 2015. And while the launch wasn't disastrous in comparison, it certainly was for me personally As someone who was always a big fan of the franchise, back in 2014 after years of no NFS game about illegal street racing and car tuning and Need for Speed World shutting down. I was extremely hyped when I saw NFS 2015 being teased, especially when they said the game would have no DLCs, only free content uprates. Which was amazing by EA standards. And When I heard that the 70$ deluxe edition would include the iconic player car from Most Wanted, 14 year old me saved up all the money in the world to pre-order the deluxe edition using a non-refundable payment method due to a lack of bank account. Without playing a demo or the beta (because those were console only and I pre-ordered the PC version) A few weeks after my preorder, a blog post was released that the PC version of the game would be delayed for a whole 6 MONTHS, all just to remove a frame rate limiter. Something that usually wouldn't take more than a week. And so the game launched for PS4 and XB1 with a 30 FPS lock and as the 6 long months passed and the PC version finally released, I had 0 hype left for the game, it was buggy despite a 6 month long extra development time and by that time the game had a whopping 2 minor content Updates. A week after the PC launch a third one was dropped which added 2 cars and after that nothing else. After this I told myself to never preorder anything again unless it's like the game of the century. So fast forward 4 years and the only other game I would ever preorder in my life was Cyberpunk...

Pre-ordering games has become a common practice in the gaming industry, but it's essential to stay informed about the potential drawbacks. This video serves as an excellent reminder of why we should think twice before hitting that pre-order button. Bug-Ridden Launches: It's frustrating to buy a game and encounter game-breaking bugs or performance issues on launch day. Let's demand developers prioritize quality over rushed releases. Unfulfilled Promises: Pre-order bonuses can be tempting, but remember, sometimes these incentives don't live up to the hype. We deserve the content we were promised. Incomplete Games: Developers may release games in an unfinished state and patch them later. We should encourage a commitment to delivering complete experiences from the start. Impulse Spending: Pre-ordering can lead to impulsive purchases that we might later regret. It's wise to wait for reviews and gameplay footage to make an informed decision. Supporting the Right Practices: By being cautious with pre-orders, we can encourage the gaming industry to focus on player satisfaction and ethical business practices. Let's keep these reminders in mind and strive for a gaming industry that consistently delivers top-quality experiences to its players. Thanks for the insightful video! 🎮👍 #GamingCommunity #PreOrderAwareness

I doubt that this is the case for every single studio out there but from my very little time in the video game industry I've come to realize that it's usually not the devs fault that games are bad its typically the corporate higher ups that rush shit out the door or force devs to change their game entirely. I assume a lot of people know this information already but I figured it's interesting and important to put out there. I hope that these companies eventually listen to us. I know that I've been getting better at how I spend my money video game wise.

Graphics/ technology are also a large part to blame. Competition these days (to publishing studios) means putting out a game that looks better than other games. There was even a story back when Metro Exodus was still coming out where I think the CEO or lead developer or some high ranking person saw the live action trailer for Far Cry 5 and thought it was in-game footage and had a meltdown because Exodus didn't look as good, which I think sums this up pretty well. So this makes development very expensive which leads to execs wanting to get the game out ASAP to start making back their money, forcing devs to release unfinished broken products. Also why so many games are so heavily monetized.
@robbytobby878 Жыл бұрын
@plaguepandemic5651 hard agree I definitely like when a game looks good but good dosen't mean most realistic or graphically advanced, and studio higher ups need to realize that. Good art direction is way better than the best, most realistic graphics.

To follow up on the previous video and how this one started: I personally think the issue with No Man's Sky was the audience allowing themselves to get overhyped. Like you said, it is on us to not get suckered by marketing speech and keep some level of skepticism. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." That's not to say a lot of these were 100% on the developer, though. I think Redfall and Gollum were the best recent examples. I personally never looked at them and was like, "yeah, those sound amazing" but I saw other people online raving about how cool they sounded. I even tried to give Redfall a chance, and there is a framework of an ok game there...but it will need a lot of work and I doubt Microsoft has any interest in saving it.

I agree that no IP or dev should blindly be trusted because of previous successes, but I desperately want to continue to hold onto the hope that FromSoftware might just be the one studio that understands the players and what they want. Never played anything older than Demons' Souls but everything from that point onwards has been IT.
@DJCPreston Жыл бұрын
FromSoftware are one of the few companies I do classify as relatively safe to preorder from, as they have been making games with a similar level of polish and balance for almost 30 years, long before patching a game was an option really. That combined with a culture of seemingly promoting from within, means that its unlikely they are close to losing the culture of needing the game to be mostly polished on release . Plus the fact that they usually self publish in their home region means that they shouldn't fall foul of the publisher enforcing an strict launch deadline that can sometimes cripple a game. So yeah you're probably still safe to preorder Fires of Rubicon and get the great big mech statue and art book if you want. (Not completely safe mind, remember "Steel Battalion: Heavy Armour" came out after Demon Souls, and that game was a near unplayable mess at launch and I think still is.)

I asked this question in numerous comment sections and forums and never got a good answer. Why do people pre-order games at all? Is there ANY advantage rather than just waiting? Or worse, why still preorder after getting disappointed/cheated/mislead numerous times already? As soon a game is a "service" rather than a "product", you have no power, the company is in charge.
@Real_Xwisdom Жыл бұрын
It’s difficult to tell if a preorder will be good by which developer is behind it now. Rockstar and cd project red both have some highly awarded games, yet both of them have followed in the pattern of other developers and released, buggy, unfinished and unenjoyable games that don’t meet up to what people expect. I expect in the future we are going to see more and more unfinished games being released to be patched later down the line. The focus seems to be shifting from finished enjoyable games to unfinished games that maximise profit and micro transactions.

Solution is simple: *Don't. Preorder. No matter. What.* Especially not from triple A companies. Even if you remember them fondly, they aren't same as what you remember. They are businesses often hellbent on milking out as much cash out of their customers for as little effort and/or risk as possible, and what helps them is that they are considered triple A and got tons of marketting budget. They don't care as much about making a good game, because they got marketting to sell it. It's why trend chasing is such a thing. If something works *really* well for one company, others will copy it one way or another for easy money. It happened with battle royale. It happened with open world games. It's happening with pushing graphics to the limits, screenshots and trailers that look pretty are way easier to sell to general masses for them then trying to sell the game by gameplay alone. And it absolutely keeps happening with all sorts of microtransactions, battlepasses, overpriced skins with prices you could instead use to buy some really freaking solid games with, sea of DLCs, pay 2 win mechanics, free 2 play model being used to try and justify the scummy practices, using f2p practices in fully fucking priced games, releasing buggy games with perfectly stable in-gme stores.

These games are one dimensional objects. Doesn’t matter if a game is made good after a year or …three of release. I’m not buying ‘No Mans Sky’. Because if I bought it now having been “made good” it promotes the lies, delays, mediocrity, buy now finish later and eventual unearned success of a product as a package. It’s promoting the process not the finished product just for them to do it again. Why do people keep doing this with Todd Howard? You know he lies. There's a strange sub set of the gaming community which seems to thrive on opposing people who complain about the state of the industry. It's truly fascinating and seems particularly unique to gaming. Looking at some of my other passions, if your football team isn't doing well the fans are screaming for change, people are ditching craft beer that doesn't live up to their standards, and people vote with their feet all the time with entertainment or general consumerism. There may be a few in those areas that support a brand no matter what but the scale of this issue in gaming and the whole whale issue in free to play business models just leaves me totally baffled. They would go crazy if they don't feel they are getting a full batch of fries at McDonald's but relish in telling others not to complain about half baked games and lazy practices like the Red Dead Redemption playstation port at nearly double the price for the same game on Xbox.

This is purely conjecture, it might be because of how intrinsically linked with the online sphere gaming is. Folks online will tie their entire identity to a franchise or a game to the point where it's actually become difficult to tell the difference between bots and genuine people. Couple that with the amount of money that can be sunk into gaming, and it's a recipe for disaster. Apologies for the boomer sounding rant btw.

I wanna share this here too since I mentioned it on a couple other videos talking about Cyberpunk 2077. I live in poland and I knew the second I read the interviews about how the game was gonna be so much bigger, so much more impressive, so much more in every sense of the word, than witcher 3, that they would not be able to deliver and were exaggerating purely for hype that they absolutely did not need and that ended up biting them in the ass. I told my friend about it and he as usual called me a pessimist and proceeded to pre-order. He got lucky with his monster of a PC that it ran, but other than the lack of bugs there, they couldn't keep practically any of the aformentioned features. It wasn't that hard to see, people just refused to. Before release, ads and billboards for the game were practically on every bus stop, every intersection etc. After release, there was absolutely nothing, except: didn't it sell great? The other thing was the simultaneous release on every system, with the development being restarted from scratch and the pandemic they should've counted losses and released for consoles later or outright delayed until everything was resolved, but since people care more about money than delivering a working product, we got what we got.

What I have learned above all else in the last 5-6 years, is that games are not going to suddenly disappear off the deep end if I do not pre-order them or buy them at launch day. Give games time. Wait a bit. Starfield just came out, for instance. And I am keeping it at an arms length, because I KNOW just how Bethesda works. I know better than to jump on it and let the hypetrain take me all the way. Whenever new games comes out now, I always give them a month or three to linger to let that "honeymoon" phase ride itself out. If the game is still amazing and absolutely incredible? Hey, great! Maybe I should buy it soon then! But me, and many others out there, are tired of giving our money to half-baked products and overpromised things. If we want gaming to become better and climb out of the hellhole it currently is stuck in with microtransactions, scummy practices and not even half-way done games being sold for outrageous prices... Then we need to show that we do not stand for it. That we are skeptical and not taking the bait so easily. Easier said than done of course...

@@Zodroo_Tint I pre-order games that I both want a physical copy of and want to play as soon as possible. A recent example would be RE4 remake. It was the first game I pre-ordered in a couple of years, and it was the first time in a long time that I've truly been hyped for a game. I thought about it for nine months straight, from the time it was announced until it was released. I didn’t care if it ended up being good or bad, I was going to play it regardless. It's one of the few times I actually didn't bother looking at the reviews first. I wanted to form my own opinion without being influenced by others. With that being said, this is a very rare occurrence for me. I'm not the type of person who pre-orders every single game that catches my interest. If it's a game or a company I'm not familiar with, I'll wait for reviews and gameplay footage. That's exactly what I plan to do with the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake. Regardless, I personally don't see the problem with pre-ordering games as long as you do your research on the game and the company developing it. I don't pre-order often, but when I do I never regret it. The games I pre-order are good quality.

My father in law got burned so hard by No Man's Sky. Even with FF16 this year I waited for reviews. The only preorder I ever really do is FFXIV expansions. Even with all my trust in Yoshi-P (the director of both FF14 and FF16) because of their track record... I'm still prepared to lose my money there. People shouldn't be so insecure about their preorder gambles just because some KZbinr made a video giving some solid pro-consumer advice. Wonderful list of examples yet again and shown with some entertaining quips.

@@Zodroo_Tint I agree with you. Many reasons go with it. Early access is another reason. Selling an unfinished game and making a juicy "roadmap" that makes the game look like it's bound for greatness, only for the devs to make millions of dollars then development to mysteriously slow down a lot. People defend this and the developers like they can't take care of themselves and it is our moral responsibility to make them millionaires.

I'll admit a lot of my preorders as of late were on the Nintendo Switch with a small handful of exceptions here and there so I haven't felt very ripped off from preordering a game as of late, with the only real exception being Fire Emblem Engage. So I think there is still merit to preordering, especially if it's a series you're especially fond of, but things like these remind everyone that there is always a risk in doing so.

"Player standards are shrinking" BEYOND WORDS! Imagine how many people go buy a RTX High-End GPU.... but turn all their game graphics down, don't care how a game looks or care about bugs. But they'll brag more about a high-end video card while their game still looks bad. I'm still amazed how people throw money at games known for poor releases, content, graphics or graphic performance issues. I recall a conversation in Discord a years back when a new player in our guild bought a new GPU, if not mistake a 2080 Ti which just came out, and bragged how amazing his game looked and performed. He streamed it for us on Twitch and we all said "why are your graphics all turned down?" and he said "I want the highest FPS possible". First thing out the next person's mouth "why did you spend XXX amount of dollars only to not increase how your looks?". His response "I don't care how my game looks". The logic behind some people is not worth the time and effort...

If you really want the pre-order bonuses and can’t help but pre-order digital, then do it and turn off automatic downloads. If the game turns out to be bad from looking at reviews, ask for a refund as they can’t say no if you haven’t downloaded yet.

I usually "pre-order" the day before the game releases. Once the reviews are out and people have an idea of how well the game runs and stuff. You can literally pre-order a game 30 minutes before it releases and still get all the pre-order bonuses, so I don't understand why people part with their money 6 months in advance.

Great series. I wanted to let you know that as I was watching your video, I was wavering between putting down $99.99 USD on Starfield so that I could preload it and be able to play it during Labor Day weekend as well have access to the OST and digital art book. After watching this second video…how about no. I was drawn to Starfield because the game combines the space exploration of No Man’s Sky with the gunfights of Borderlands with the open story of Skyrim. What could go wrong? Well, your videos reminded me that EVERYTHING could go wrong. And what good is it spending $100 USD to play a game early if it’s broken? I think I’ll purchase the Cyberpunk DLC instead. It’s only $30, a safer purchase, and I can buy and enjoy some Labor Day grub while I wait for Starfield reviews. Thanks.

I am in the same boat as you with Starfield. My friends are SCREECHING about how amazing of a game it is. 11/10 masterpiece! Its the BEST GAME ever made! They perfected it all! This is a game people will talk about for decades! etc. I'm... Not buying it. No. I know Bethesda. I know them so damn well. I loved and adored their stuff since the days of Morrowind and Oblivion, but I can't forget the bad they have done. I am absolutely sure Starfield is a great game. So many people are loving it! Great! Maybe I will too, come next year in a 5-6 months time, after the "honeymoon phase" has died down a bit - and I know I will get peoples slightly more sober opinions on it. Its so easy and so dangerous to get pulled along hype trains these days - I know that too well myself. Starfield is not going anywhere. It will be there for me in half a year's time - and so will many other games to come. No rush. No pressure. Thats my mindset at least.
