The briefcase carries the Respawn Machines core, developed by Helix Tech. During the Gravel Wars they purchased 9 inmates on death row and brought them back to life. From that point onwards they were company property, meant to be cloned and revived as many times as need be. During the respawning process, there was a 1% chance the machine would screw up and produce a defect, hence the engineer with no eyes. Let's go over our main guys. Fritz Ludwig, or 'The Medic'. This version of Fritz left the war life for running a hospital where he regularly hung out with Jeremey (Scout). However, after Jeremey's kidnapping, he heads to the Conagher Slaughterhouse to find him. The Detective or 'The Spy'. Having been Archibald's main man for years, he decided to go looking for the kidnapped governor so that his past of pulling strings in the war wouldn't be revealed. The Soldier. The Spy's new assistant and a variant who actually served in the war. He may be goofy but he's not stupid. Archibald: A rat who double dealed with Red and Blu to get them their own machines so he could extend the Gravel Wars indefinitely and take all their money. Once the respawn machine started to malfunction, he pushed out the Diazepam. but it only seemed to accelerate the side effects like paranoia. The distortions and corpses you see everywhere are from repeated uses of the Respawn Machine. Once its core was removed from the machine itself, it began to create temporal anomalies (rifts in time which is why the Soldier seem to time travel). Upon a mercs death within the vicinity of the core, they enter the bar in the middle of nowhere. It's essentially their purgatory until the machine is used again and brings them back. comment if you want a specific part explained

@Jackson_Assault the core was removed. The failures became more prevalent since its like taking a battery out of a toy. It stops working properly As for Fritz, he most likely developed the dual personality as a result of his respawn machine defect, like with Jeremy's paranoia. The immortality is because his class, originally designed around healing from mortal wounds, reflects in the machines core, which now that its removed, is more potent and volatile, 'respawning him'
