With the foundry, you thermally decomposed (removed CO2) the chalk from CaCO3 to CaO which is more commonly known as 'Quicklime' which reacts exothermically with water to form Ca(OH)2 :), some chemistry for all. EDIT I wouldn't necessarily touch it with your bare hands as it could react with the water on your hands and Ca(OH)2 is quite basic.

except ... it's not chalk at all. most schoolboard or sidewalk "chalk" is gipsum. This would be confirmed by the fact it pretty much didn't react at all in acid. it it were chalk, it would dissolve in the acid. gipsum otoh isn't an alkaline but a salt so it's already the product of a base and acid reaction.
