Feijoa Growing Tips and 1 Year Update - (Pineapple Guava)

Now we need a 4 year update! We planted a few feijoas on our property here in Oregon over the past couple years, and our first fruit is hanging on one of them right now! I keep checking it every couple days to see if its on the ground or shakes off. Can't wait to try it!

Nice to see growing feijoas growing over there! I am from Argentina, and I planted 3 feijoas 2 years ago not sure which variety it is (recently here we plant feijoas for consumption again, in the past during the colonial settlement of the Spanish it was in every house besides lack of variety of fruits specialy in autumn, but then with european Immigration was left) . Today walking around in the middle of reserved area I found 2 wild large feijoas trees when I pick up the fruits I realized the peel is quite thicker! Now I let them mature a bit more how the wild feijoas taste!

Willie Watson (The NZ cricketer) used to have a tree in his front yard that his old man used to let us pick from on our way home from school, they were the best. I'd never seen them here in Australia until recently and my eye's lit up, lol. Most of my Aussie mates had never seen, heard or tasted them before. Certainly one of those unique tasting fruits

Indeed, mine is 2 years on and still no fruit. Thinking it just is not getting enough sun, although it does get about 6 hours a day full sun, which I would've thought was enough. It looks very healthy otherwise, just no fruit.

W o w! Thanks! I love mulching but have never seen such a great demo of why and how it’s so good! I planted a feijoa a few years ago, maybe four? First year two flowers beautiful but no fruit. Second and third years more flowers and last year (year 3) two fruit….that dropped off early! Grr! Btw I am a retired Brit living northern Portugal and had never tasted a feijoa! This spring….dozens of flowers! So very pretty, and I’d keep them for the flowers alone! Then…our spring was terrible and it rained. Heavily. All the time. We thought we’d lost the fruits. But no much later we noticed a couple! Fingers crossed 🤞 and now, lo and behold it’s apparent there are quite a number out there and they are now falling off ready! I tried the first one. Hm. Odd…tried the second and wow! Super love it! I’d been told they were guava like and I adore them…so now I’m very happy with my feijoas! I think I should be trimming them back a bit to keep them sort of 5ft tall and airy. Not sure when I should be doing that..I now need to mulch more in the spring and…find a sheep..or at least it’s dropping. Hmm perhaps my friend’s rabbit droppings in their bedding would be ok? Awesome. You should be able to find some trees in the US. Quite a few people grow them there. They're often referred to as Pineapple guava too

I grew my own feijoa plant from seeds. Mine is producing fruits this year and one didn't. The ones I gave out to people are fruiting as well. I selected the biggest and best flavour to grow. It took 4 years to fruit from seedling. I live in Hamilton in the Waikato area. They grow really well here.

Mines is about 8 feet tall, shaped like a mushroom, and it's a very resilient plant. I need to add compost and fertilizer so the fruit grows larger. I currently have 4 types of Guavas. This one, a "Strawberry guava plant, and 2 others I'm not exactly sure what they are but one will grow softball size fruit.

Wow I only had 3 feijoa trees and I had so many feijoas I didn't know what to do with them. I hope you will have an outlet for your surplus fruit. Some fruit is better to eat with skin than others. I found the Unique a bit too coarse, but Apollo and Mammoth were much better.

I wonder if they can be grown in containers in colder climates. Our summers are reasonably warm, but winter gets down to -20C or even -25C or colder. However, my garage is warmer (around -10C to 5C in winter) and my basement cellar is even warmer (5-10C, but no windows).

Our feijoas are in an unheated greenhouse. They started producing fruit three years ago and what's interesting to me is that they are flowering earlier each year. The resulting fruit seemed to be ripening earlier and tasting better each year, as well.

Nice.i bought 55 nazemetz plus different varieties.a few snapped by the wind.i didn't stake them for 4-5 years and had to pruned a bunch.they definitely love sheep manure,they will blow up with that fertilizer.the branches are brittle and will continue to snap in high winds.what material is the one holding the tree to the stakes?

I bought some seeds from Florida and am growing some inside. It's too cold in Canada to grow them. The tree is two years old and no signs of fruit yet :( I do put it outside in May when its warm enough and hopefully I get fruit soon. Hey, sounds good! Since they’re grown from seed they can take longer to flower and fruit than grafted or cutting grown trees. Some say around 5-6 years to fruit from seed. I would just keep your trees healthy and protected in winter like you’re doing and make sure the pot is big enough and they’re well fed and they will hopefully do well :)

I got unnamed variety (from seeding) in a 1 gallon bucket (probably 1 year old) last fall, and it grew pretty good over summer, of course no flowers or fruit yet. and today got another small tree of Takaka variety for 40usd! bigger ones are going for 90, 120 and 230$ I think I’ll get some more of the smaller ones and plant them in pairs unnamed-named variety so they help each other grow. hopefully they’ll catch up in a year or two to those big ones they sell.
