It’s crazy how much comfort I got from listening to the weather radio. Brings back memories of my Poppa, who’s recently passed away. He always carried an old timer, then a Winchester after he broke the old timer.

Same here, my father also had the weather report playing in the back ground, back in the 70's & 80's. Put's me back on the farm, at the kitchen table, with the smell of Pall-Mall or hand rolled Bugler in the air.

Well done. It's sometimes sad to see how the good old things are neglected or even thrown away - and it's so gratifying to rescue them and bring them back to life. My oldest knife is from around 1890 and was used as a sidepocket knife in a Bavarian Lederhose. Only yesterday I rescued old brass handles (around 1900) from doors somebody threw out during a renovation. The doors themselves were done and I have a couple of beautiful wooden ones at home for my own renovation project.

Any time steel has been stamped, if you can heat the steel until it discolors from the heat, even if the stamping has been sanded or polished off, the stamping will reappear. It will discolor a slightly different color from the heat treatment.

You can chemicly remove a lot of rust on old knives with vinegar this way you don't have to use scrapers and abrasives so much and take a chance of damaging them. I have cleaned up a number of old knives with vinegar and a plastic cleaning brush. Sometimes I use a metal polish with a sonic toothbrush too. Weenol and an old Sonicare tooth brush works great.

I recently got some of those little plastic wheels that chuck up in a Dremel tool... They're kind of pinwheel looking deals that come in several color coordinated grits. Good for cleaning up blades and such without being as harsh as a wire wheel. They seem to work really good so far. Those things and a little Flitz is a good way to go without doing too much.

Beautiful old case knife Kevin. Cleaned up nice! Books like that give you a reference to go by, but the reality is in the market of Case knife collecting, the Real serious collectors are very experienced and only lay down top cash for Mint examples. They can tell if the blade has even the slightest sharpening done etc. that being said.-There are knife guys like myself that don’t particularly seek out the Mint stuff. I prefer old valuable folders that are in the 80% -95% condition. To me they have that mojo! Your Awesome old Barlow’ there is what I prefer in a Classic pocket knife. When they’re Mint you don’t carry them and you gotta fuss to keep them polished. I don’t blame you for saying hey!!! I wouldn’t take less than $400. That old workhorse Barlow you saved from the Box means more because of its circumstance and love you put into it! You go to a knife show and lay down $475 for a Mint one in some guys glass - will not mean the same to your Heart and Soul. Enjoy that beautiful old Barlow. I scored on a beautiful old Case tested green bone Jack 2 months ago for $14 . Not mint - probably 90% and that’s the way I like em! God Bless

The best knife purchase I made recently was getting two Case Classics for $75 each. I didn't realize that they were Case Classic, and the prices kept on dropping. One day I realized that they were Case Classics. I they were just on the site a Case knife. For those who don't know Queen Cutlery made most of the Case Classic that Parker contracted when he owned Case. When Bill Howard worked at Queen, he was in charge of the Case Classics and Winchesters. If you can't afford a GEC, get a Case Classic or a Winchester. The only problem with the two Classics I bought is that Queen was still using celluloid or some such material for scales. There is significant shrinkage, but I don't want to replace the scales because Bill Howard may have applied them.

I've always felt grinder wheels where to abrasive sometimes and can ruin the surface of certain metals. So i just use fine steel wool to polish up older knives or i will just let em set in some evaporust that stuff works wonders and it cleans em up real good but. My favorite wadding polish to use is Eagle One "Nevr-dull" it comes with a cleaning/ polish agent soaked into it and really shines up whatever ur cleaning. Its great on a bunch of metals brass, chrome, steel and more.

I think Case knifes are nice but I also think they are very overpriced and because of that I also feel like that is a bit “Un-American”. The culture of buying a product and paying more just because of a brand name is def not a true American heritage idea, it’s a modern corporate American idea. So not buying China made I feel is more of a brand name thing rather than being about American made loyalty. We should pressure Case and other name brand knives to lower their cost so that Americans can more widely enjoy them.

Unfortunately it costs too much to provide those Americans with good paying jobs and insurance. For that alone I think Case provides a good knife at a decent price. Especially something like a Sod Buster. $40-$50 is fine for a good knife. Their QC is what needs to improve.

I hate to go along with the crowd… not my cup of tea. Spyderco for everyday carry here .. traditional collecting : Camillus. Heavy duty users : BECKERS! Of course if I find something in the street or at a garage sale for giveaway price……. Lol

@@BrandonGavin_EDC I really try to support and purchase American made goods but sometimes I don’t. I think many companies like Case can offer better pricing, their knifes are also smaller but it is what it is.

Search for Author Houston Price. Collecting Knives. They made 15 editions. 15th is the best one and it’s the last one made. It was published in 2008.

I totally agree that Barlow has been round the block and now it's going to be appreciated let it be old and graceful got one just the same come down the family over 100 years old and it nose is position what is telling you don't fix that don't want fixing that's what mine tells me anyway thumbs up but I suppose a little bit of spit and Polish doesn't hurt

I really liked the weather radio in the back. I kind of thought he was going to do more to polish up that old knife but i guess it didn’t call for it, cool old pocket knife.

To clean an old knife, I dose it with WD40. After that the dirt is easy to clean off.

Very interesting. Things I didn't know, but am glad I happened across them. Makes me wish you were a neighbor. It'd be fun to see you drop by and play in my shop. I have cabinet (filtered air) buffers, a four wheel, variable speed grinder, several Dremel like tools (Foredom, RAM, dental (400,000 RPM) grinders and a chest full of bits. It'd give me a chance to learn a few more things.
