Tarikh Episode 690
In this episode Nikhil talks about The history of Kalinga. Situated on the eastern coast of India, Kalinga's story unfolds over millennia, shaped by its strategic location along major trade routes and its interactions with various dynasties and empires.
The earliest traces of civilization in Kalinga date back to the prehistoric era, with archaeological findings revealing a sophisticated urban culture that flourished along the banks of rivers like the Mahanadi. As the centuries unfolded, Kalinga emerged as a distinct political entity, renowned for its maritime prowess and commercial acumen. Its coastal cities became bustling centers of trade, connecting the Indian subcontinent with Southeast Asia and beyond.
One of the most pivotal moments in Kalinga's history occurred in the 3rd century BCE when it came into conflict with the Mauryan Empire, under the reign of Emperor Ashoka. The brutal Kalinga War, immortalized for its ferocity and the subsequent remorse of Ashoka, left an indelible mark on the region. It is said that Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism was partly inspired by the horrors he witnessed in Kalinga, leading to his adoption of non-violence as a guiding principle.
In the centuries that followed, Kalinga experienced periods of prosperity and political upheaval, as various dynasties vied for control over the region. The Gupta Empire, followed by the Eastern Ganga dynasty, left their imprint on Kalinga's cultural landscape, fostering the development of art, architecture, and literature.
