In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Aileen Wuornos, an American serial killer who gained notoriety for murdering seven men between 1989 and 1990. Born on February 29, 1956, in Rochester, Michigan, Wuornos endured a troubled childhood marked by abandonment, abuse, and instability. By her teenage years, she was engaging in sex work to support herself, eventually leading a transient lifestyle.
Wuornos targeted her victims while working as a prostitute along Florida highways. She claimed that the killings were acts of self-defense, alleging that the men had attempted to sexually assault her. However, her violent spree was driven by deeper psychological trauma, and her behavior was also influenced by a turbulent relationship with her girlfriend, Tyria Moore, whom she was desperate to support.
Her arrest in 1991 led to a highly publicized trial, where Wuornos was convicted and sentenced to death. She was executed by lethal injection on October 9, 2002, after spending over a decade on death row. Wuornos’ life and crimes have been the subject of several films, documentaries, and books, including the 2003 film Monster, where Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Wuornos earned widespread acclaim. Her case remains controversial, with discussions often focusing on issues of mental illness, trauma, and the societal factors that shaped her violent path.
