Built in 1957, Hirakud stands tall in Odisha's Sambalpur district. This earthen giant, once the world's largest, was a marvel of engineering. It aimed to control floods, generate electricity, and irrigate vast swathes of land. India's independence leader, Jawaharlal Nehru, even called such dams "temples of modern India."
However, Hirakud's story goes beyond grandeur. The land where it sits whispers of a hidden past. Legends speak of Shambhala, a mythical city, and historical records mention diamond deposits that once thrived there. The dam's construction submerged this very land, displacing 22,000 families.
