Tarikh Episode 570
In this episode Tarikh Nikhil talks about Faxian, also spelled as Fa-Hien or Fa Xian, was a Chinese Buddhist monk and traveler who lived during the 4th and 5th centuries CE. He is renowned for his extensive pilgrimage to India in search of Buddhist scriptures and his detailed accounts of his journey. Faxian's travels took place during the Eastern Jin dynasty in China, a time when Buddhism was flourishing in the country.
Setting out from Chang'an (modern-day Xi'an) in 399 CE, Faxian embarked on a perilous overland journey to India. He faced numerous hardships, including harsh weather conditions, bandits, and treacherous terrain. After a challenging three-year journey, he arrived in India in 402 CE.
During his 10-year stay in India, Faxian visited many sacred Buddhist sites, including Bodh Gaya, the birthplace of Buddhism, and collected a vast collection of Buddhist scriptures. He meticulously recorded his observations and experiences in his travelogue, "Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms," which provides valuable insights into the history, culture, and religious practices of the regions he visited.
Faxian's return to China in 414 CE was equally challenging, as he faced numerous obstacles and dangers. However, his efforts were not in vain, as his documentation of Buddhist texts significantly contributed to the preservation and spread of Buddhism in China. Faxian's journey remains a celebrated chapter in the history of Chinese Buddhism and travel literature.
