That's a great question. I really think you should start advertising to a defined and specific audience or neighborhoods about 3 weeks before the springs starts popping. Yo Keith I've been watching your videos for a while I had a question if you were to start out from today which side of the business would you invest in landscaping, tree work, cutting lawns, window cleaning etc. When your first start out and you want your profit margins exceptional?
@keith-kalfas3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question but the answer isn't simple because, even though 1.)Tree Trimming is the highest profit margin thing we do. I don't get enough tree trimming work to pack an entire schedule. 2.) Landscape installs in the sweet spot of $7,500 are very profitable, but not without first becoming experienced. 3.) Garden bed maintenance and mulch has always been the "bread and butter". But you need to develop a system to make it profitable, because it's very easy to mis judge the scope of work and end up working your tail off for no money. Lol. 4.) Lawn care also takes a long time to build a solid clientele. Lawn care , to me is "All-In or Get Out". Brian makes great money in lawns because his approach is systematic. 5.) Window cleaning is tricky because it's a "mindset" business. You can work yourself to death and bang your head against the wall. Until you learn that it's a "luxury service". I should make a video on this. But in conclusion. It might be smart to just jump in and go grab ALL of the low hanging fruit you can.. And clean up the mess in year 2 or 3. Lol 👌

Keith I know this is an older video, but around 10:15 you say the burning bush shrubs are 39 a piece so you charge 80 to plant them.. does that 80 include the 39 for the plant or is that just planting services fee? I'm sure it is but wanted to verify.. I'm trying to put together a standardized price chart for my small company an this is very valuable information as always!!
@keith-kalfas19 күн бұрын
You charge triple the retail (which includes the plant) so a $40 plant would cost the customer $120 (transported and installed) and backfilled with compost amended with the existing ground soil. So $500 worth the plants... you charge the customer $1500 total... to have them "appear I'm the garden beds". Hope that helps. I should make an entire video on this

Do you charge more per yard for rock ?
@keith-kalfas3 жыл бұрын
Yep. And it depends on the rock too. There's an entire spreadsheet on where to start and progress when it comes to installing rocks. But you can start out by charging 2.5 - 3 X your materials cost. Make sure your calculating 1.) Prepwork 2.) Delivery 3.) Footsteps 4.) Do you need a machine? 5.) Cleanup time. P.S. if you're just getting started you can use a formula called T&M (Time & Materials). Which means that you charge the client retail price for materials and then tack on your standard man hr. rate on top of that.

I don't want to rain on your parade. Dude? Preen?? As a Master Gardener, that shit is highly toxic to animals, pets, beneficial pollinaters and birds. Sadly, if you're using it near runoff areas that s*** goes into the water systems and kills major aquatic life. It then goes into our waste water treatment. I encourage you to research it, and possible viable alternatives, I can't encourage you to take a master gardener class, or consult with a few, we may have varying opinions on Preen, (believe me I used to use it) but, resorting to harsh destructive pesticides and herbacides, is not cool. Cancer is, huge next accidents the major contributor to death on our industry.

Brother, I had a huge wakeup call when I had been using the preen for several months in several gardens that I was managing and I noticed that within a few months many of the pet owners especially the cats and a couple of small dogs died within months of each other..I researched it, and said to myself it wasn't coincidental.. sad and bad karma for me.
