You start a new world in your favorite game, Subnutica, you can’t wait for that feeling of a fresh start. Going from killing sea dragons to desperately chasing a bladder fish to get water . You are sitting there staring at the stupidly long loading screen of the aurora crashing and then finally it finishes loading. You go through the regular cutscene of you in the pod “oh no I’m crashing aaaaaa” you jokingly say as the pod shakes on entry to the atmosphere. “Hey sir get back in your set or I wiaisididjduenejf” you say as the cover of the thing flies off and hits you knocking you out. “Hua is that burning ring of fire” you say as your character wakes up and puts it out. You then finally get to exit the pod you walk over to the ladder expecting the usual bird creature cutscene as you exit but this time there are no birds. “Strange must be just a glitch” you say as you get on top of the pod and dive into the water. You look around to see the fishes but there is nothing there “okay this is getting creepy” you say as you start your journey. In the caves there is no crash fish. When you finally get the suit to get to the aurora and you swim over. You expect to hear the signature roar of the reaper leviathan. *but there is nothing there* “why am I still playing” you wander through the aurora to find crawlers. BUT THERE IS NOTHING THERE you swim all the way to the void to try to find the ghost leviathans *BUT THERE IS NOTHING THERE* suddenly you hear the voice of the P D A for the first time and it says “ gone gone gone gone gone”

This was genuinely really creepy! I think that while the isolation in Subnautica is a huge part of the game's fear-factor, the idea of being stalked by something actually intelligent and malicious adds something really unsettling to it. The idea of home invasion is scary enough, but when your home is being invaded when you're supposed to be the only person alive on the planet... chills. I wonder if the... thing was a human, or if it was some kind of other entity. The random half-finished tube and the seamoth thefts feel like a new consciousness coming to grips with its environment rather than an experienced human using a malicious multiplayer mod. Very well done Edit: just saw there's more, guess I'll see if I was right or not 😁😁
