Ikea Skådis Review: Better than a DIY Pegboard?

Skådis pegboard is a pegboard inspired storage system from Ikea. But how does it compare to a DIY pegboard system? And is it worth extra cost?
Pros:
The biggest advantage of using the Skådis system over a DIY pegboard is the convenience and the nice range of accessories.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Skådis accessories, most are made of metal and not plastic and the quality feels sturdy.
I think it is worth the cost
Cons
The range of well-fitting accessories will be smaller compared to a regular round shaped pegboard.
Note that the board is only attached at the top with two little screws, this could definitely be an issue if you want to use the board for heavy stuff.
I wish that the range of accessories was bigger

Thank you for your video on this system. Good information. I have almost all Ikea pieces in my sewing room and am very pleased with how everything came out. on one wall I have a Kallax 4 units x 4 units and used the drona cubes to store all my fabrics. I like this because my fabrics are stored neatly and out of site. on another wall I have another Kallax , 2 x 4 units wide, in which I store books, magazines and my pressing tools. One thing I did was to take Ikea casters and install them under a tall 4 drawer filing cabinet for which I also installed an Ikea mirror on the side. On the other side I want to install cork board. My room is only 10 x 10 1/2 feet, but with Ikea pieces it is very efficient.

Yes Ikea really excels when it comes to clever storage solutions that are also pleasing to the eye. I too have Kallax in my sewing corner and love it!

I bought these this month for my sewing room - really really happy with them. And the accessories are perfect. Especially loving the letter holders which I’ve used for holding pattern instructions from both magazine & books (and printed patterns!). Just ordered some more accessories too because my Ikea didn’t have stock when I went in.

Last Stitch with the letter holders, I’ve found if I’m following instructions off a magazine then the stretchy bungee cords are great for holding down the pages too. It’s all just so practical! I was initially concerned about being “tied in” to the system because of the shape of the holes, but the price of them is so good compared to regular peg boards it was definitely worth a shot.

Thank you for the review. Agree with your concern regarding mounting with only 2 screws. Suspect that can be reinforced by drilling appropriately placed holes through the mounting bracket and adding additional screws. Add long screws, using washers as spacers, to the bottom edge, as well. Personally prefer traditional pegboard & hooks. Not a log more work to add the support frame. Freedom to add load bearing shelves and other purchased & DIY accessories. Thank you, again, for sharing your opinion.

you might consider printing a bottom bracks and the mounts as well as a solution. In my case I am using Skadis as decoration on Dormers which are at inward facing 45 degree angles and need the bottom brcket to be mounted to hold the panel against the wall

**One serious CON** -- Ikea pegboards are only compatible with Ikea peg accessories. The oval shaped hole spacing is different than standard pegboard holes which makes the pegboard not compatible with generic pegboard accessories. For further annoyance the ikea skadis hooks are not a shippable item -- you have to go to the store to get them. Frustrating if you bought their pegboard and had it shipped to you.

Your sewing space looks really nice with skådis in place. I actually bought this system, but for my kitchen. But I have concrete walls, and haven't had the energy to mount them yet. It's no walk in the park to make holes in concrete 😬. Back in the nineties I used pegboard in my sewing room and I've got to warn you all, things get very dusty! These days I keep everything in containers with lids, but it sure doesn't look as nice!

Oh, I feel you, concrete walls are the worst to drill! And great point about the dust, I'm not a huge fan of having open storage either, so I'm primarily only using it for things like rulers, manuals and most used tools.

Yay. We don't have IKEA in New Zealand, a huge sadness for me😢. I get my IKEA fix through visits to friends and family in Australia and sometimes Singapore and have this system on my list for my next trip. Not sure I need it but WANT it (pretty much my approach to all my purchases from IKEA 😗😍

Hehe, creating cravings for things we don't need is pretty much Ikea whole businesses model 😀I don't ever stroll in the stores, I just get in quick with a purpose and then leave again. Does not work with regular pegboard- it uses hooks. Very versatile, and there are loads of designs on Thingyverse to print your own fittings and accessories

A screw can easy hang a metric ton (more than 2 actually for an M5 bolt made of decent steal, IIRC).

I have an IKEA near me. The accessories for this pegboard are rarely stocked. They generally have a lot of one particular accessory in one color. Perhaps it’s fallout from COVID-19 issues at factories? Inventory of many things in the store are low/gone. Perhaps accessories can be found elsewhere online?

Madusonkeeper, can you tell me how you've found the desk connector? Does the board flap around at the top where it's unsupported, or does it feel solid and sturdy? I'm worried it will snap off with pressure!

@@katewilliams4982 Yes it wiggles at the top, when you move the table. I have it on my sewing table and it also wiggles when I use my machine. But you have only problems with the clear boxes. I taped them. It does not snap off.

Depending on your wall surface and the weight of things you are going to hang on the board, you can also use 3M Command strips to attach the board to the wall.

No not really, they are made for the big oval holes and will not be easy to attach to regular peg board holes

As I am a Swede I can tell you that "Skådis" is the swedish word for actor and to "Skåda" is to watch/see
