My greatest regret in my classic car life was turning down a genuine (and cheap at the time) Capri RS 3100. As soon as I saw you in front of the Capri it all came flooding back! Back in 1980 I was looking at a new job out of Sydney in rural country NSW. I was then driving a VW Beetle so I thought something with a bit more Oomph! might fit the bill if I got the job! As I left Sydney for my initial interview I passed a Toyota dealership selling new Toyotas but I spied a black Capri parked out front (I knew nothing about 3100s then). BINGO - I was offered the job, after the interview and being on a high I stopped at the Toyota dealership on my way back into Sydney and they fell over themselves when I showed interest in the RS 3100 - they wanted it off the forecourt, good riddens ha ha. They said take it, take it for a week! I left the Beetle behind and headed home feeling like a king as only a 20 year old can. What a step up from the VW, lovely motor. My mum hated it, calling it a 'black coffin on wheels' and my elder brother who owned Alfas and Porsches thrashed it on local roads. After a week I realised with my new job I'd need an estate car so returned the Capri sadly. I often wonder were it is now as I believe only a limited number were allowed into Australia at the time only for racing events, mine being a rare example for road use? I believe the black colour was non-factory? Australians who read this of a certain age will recall the 'Super-Roo' decal used on fast Fords here in the 1970s, someone had put these on the front wings of the Capri. www.pinterest.com.au/pin/497718196297568976/

Could someone please explain the significance of the “52 K” number plate as shown on the Smart car for those of us on the other side of the pond who aren’t in the know about such things?
@brendanfleming65849 ай бұрын
Effectively it's a really short plate you can put on whatever you want - once you get rid of the Smart it's currently attached to!!! I say "get rid" but you just apply to put the Smart back on it's original plate, and you get a certificate for the 52 K plate. UK folk love a short dateless plate, and will pay handsomely for it.
@SmallBlogV89 ай бұрын
I don't know what its specific history is, but very short plates like that are generally worth a lot because they'll be extremely early ones that have been passed around over many decades. Most registration systems over here have been very prescriptive 6-or-7-character formats, since the early 1960s, so the registration '52 K' most likely goes back a long, long way. It might even sell for £52k...
@jinxvrs9 ай бұрын
Ah, cherished (or vanity) number plates can be worth a fortune in the UK. Plates have to conform to certain regulations in respect of format of the letters and digits (there have been various formats over the years). However early issues are most valuable, they can (mostly) be transferred from car to car - "A 1" from 1903 is still in use, but would have been attached to many different cars over the years. Apparently the highest price paid for a number plate is £518,000 for "25 O" - "A 1" would sell for far more nowadays, "X 1" sold for £500k in 2012. Regarding "52 K", this is a Liverpool issue from the late 1950s or early '60s. Funnily enough, someone in the town I live in has "526 K" which was originally on a Morris Minor, now gracing something German, the last time I saw it. Their first name starts with a "K". Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) has "250 GTO" on a Ferrari 250 GTO.
@TheLateBrakeShow9 ай бұрын
Low amounts of numbers and letters = worth more.
@VirtualGuth9 ай бұрын
@@TheLateBrakeShow Thanks Jonny and others for the details. So if I understand things correctly, the registration number itself is what is of value here rather than the physical plate itself. I say this because on British car shows that I’ve watched in the past I’ve seen owners having new plates made up for cars before offering them up for sale. This is all quite different to how things are done over here in the States and so it is quite interesting to me. Please know that I enjoy your content very much Jonny. I’m now a subscriber to your channel and wish you a very merry Christmas! P.S. I can hardly believe that there are two different S800’s on offer at this auction. Those are incredibly rare over here and I can’t imagine that you see too many more of them over there. For what it’s worth, I have watched those episodes where your own S600 was featured before you sold it. It is surprising to me how many S2000 fans are unaware of Honda’s S car history and cars such as these.

Damn. I had two Integra Type R’s. One was black and the most recent was Milano Red. I purchased it from the first owner, it had a full Honda service history with every receipt since new. It has only run Mobil 1 0W40 since new and burnt zero oil even at 170k when I sold it. I serviced it every 1500 miles as I am OCD, and totally rebuilt it with £25,000 spent including two full repaints. In its last incarnation, it left me with Tein Type Flex coil overs, Whiteline adjustable front and rear roll bars, strut braces, Spoon N1, Tegiwa manifold, buddy club shirt shifter, Retrimmed recaro seat, Seibon carbon bonnet, 16” light alloys, Tarox brakes. It was like a banshee on full chat! I even put a custom baffled sump on, and inspection of the bottom end showed it to be brand new. In hindsight, it was better as a stock car with factory suspension and 15” wheels. A truly epic car. Better than my E30 M3 for sure.
@danielwooster50639 ай бұрын
Sounds like an absolutely epic car! I've also owned two DC2 Integras both white UK cars like the one in the auction. The first one was #00018 - the second one would have been one of the last UK cars & didn't have a number on the plaque - both were pretty much kept standard - the last one I sold back to Honda for their heritage fleet - & since been featured in a number of magazines & on KZbin footage, sadly it met it's demise in the hands of one of the aforementioned KZbinrs - though its still registered as SORN on the DVLA site? They are incredibly raw cars (even in standard trim) & can definately be described as a 'Cult Car' - I remember having a discussion on one of the forums that the ITR was as much a drivers car as any Porsche or Lotus Elise etc - I think time has proven this to be true, especially as cars like this are just not manfactured anymore. I'm sure the car I sold to Honda was in much better condition than the one shown here in Jonny's video & was sold for a lot less than the end auction price (£15750) - despite the low miles some work (& £££s) would be needed to bring it back to A1 condition - the front of the inner wheel arches could be hiding a real horror if the famous 'slot' hasn't been filled!

I bought an Ital estate for my wife in that colour ,when I brought it home she refused to look at it and slammed the door in my face leaving me and the car outside. When we came to sell it 4 years later she cried at its passing, she still compares all car headlights to those on that car stating that they were the best she has ever driven behind, it was crap but she loved it, it transported kids dogs baby and associated gear all over the place, and she would move my Range Rover classic out of the way to take it out. Nice to see cars 20 years old being classed as a classic. I passed my driving test two years ago at the age of 53 and I bought a 2003 Honda CR-V SE Sport. We’ve replaced anything it has needed when it’s broke inc the Condenser,Compressor and Aux belt. A third party CAT and o2 sensors. But even the simple things like the heated wing mirrors and sun roof still work. It comes with the all important picnic table 😂 and is an ex Honda dealer car for its first 12 months. Only downside is that it’s done 132,500 but that K20A engine is bullet proof as well you know 😉

Man, I'd be all over that V6-swapped MX5 if I could. All the power you could want in an MX5, plus a sweet V6 exhaust note to go with it.
@markythegreat9 ай бұрын
honestly, it's too much money though. You can get a rock solid, forged turbo mx5 for £10k with just as much power and equal reliability really if tuned correctly. The mileage isn't what kills these cars anyway it's chassis leg (mk2.5 like this one) or sill (all of them) rust. So yeah, get a £10k 250whp turbo mx5, or if you do have £30k...many other options exist (I'd get a supercharged S2 elise with spare change for trackdays). Or a Z4M, or very tidy Boxster S....absolute MX5 fanboy here but the rocketeer conversion, I don't get it personally.
@jamesellsworth96739 ай бұрын
I would wonder why the swap was made and then the car barely driven. Did they create a problem?
@markythegreat9 ай бұрын
@@jamesellsworth9673 there's a lot I don't get about this car. The conversion almost certainly cost close to £20k without the donor. But a brand spanking 800 mile old MK2.5 that's been kept garaged is going to be worth mega money on its own left standard. Not £100k like Jonny suggests the teg will be, but still, there will not be many if any sub 10k mile MK1 or MK2 mx5's on the market in 10 years time. So to rocketeer convert it at vast expense and then never drive it doesn't sound like it had problems, so much as a buyer who bought the hype and thought you'd get a completely transformed experience that could rival a £30k car, then realised it's still just a MK2.5 mx5 which until you sort the suspension, chassis stiffness, seats and brakes, will feel and drive like a cheap, floppy Japanese car that now has a ford engine in it.

The Type Rs are already approaching 100k in the US market. No one wants the RHD imports from Japan so the domestic LHD versions are $$$.
@MrGrentch9 ай бұрын
US buyers are importing RHD JDM's to beat the band, Integras and others. The second they pass 25 years old and can be imported into the US, JDM cars are sought out. JDM Type R's are 20k plus and until recently they were only able to import the 96 spec versions because of their 25 year rule. Their domestic versions are high priced because they only sold 3000 in the US and many were wrecked/modded/stolen so they're rare and the US classic market is a bit nuts and fetches higher prices anyway. They also seem oddly myopic as buyers and only seem to think US or JDM. They forget/don't know a fair number of such cars were sold in Europe and are LHD including DC2 Type R's. So they could import a LHD Type R from say Germany for around 20k$, which is also better specced than the US ones were as they were built down to a price(detuned engine, no Recaros, momo wheel). It's ironic that the worst spec Integra R's are now the most valuable.
