I didn't vote for him, didn't want him to be my president, but I at least respected him, and after seeing how he handled himself in front of those kids I even admired him a little. And then in the days and weeks to follow I really appreciated his leadership; he was calm, decisive, measured and focused. It felt like the Captain was at the helm, and it's hard to convey to people who weren't alive then how important that was. I never once thought he was going to fly off the handle and "push the button", or do the reverse and crumble under the pressure - and now that I've had four years to experience the anxiety of either or both of those things happening if a day like this one were to happen under the more recent republican, I can definitely appreciate the value in someone like Bush. There are plenty of people who are looking back saying we should never have gone to war and criticizing Bush for the decisions he made then, and honestly I can't say whether or not we should have, but I'm also not going to throw stones, because I remember after the shock started to wear off that I wanted blood just as much as most of us did. My town was a commuter community just outside the city, so practically everyone knew someone or had a loved one involved in one way or another and I could see the way I felt in the faces of everyone I knew. Right or wrong, it's what we wanted.

I remember that day as clear as yesterday. No I was not in any of the cities hit but we were evacuated and released to go home in my State (CA). That day, my former Marine father hugged our American flag and cried for the dead and their families... that is how we all felt. The rest of the week was the most quiet and somber; the skies, the people even nature seemed to be mourning. At one point, I walked to our local firehouse, having made chocolate chip & walnut cookies and printed out the iconic photo of the firemen of NYC at the pile raising the Flag and framed it. Tears streamed as I told them how much I appreciated them and their fallen brothers, handing them my gifts. I was received with respect and given silent hugs. We strangers were an instant family.

It does warm my heart, as an American, that our brothers and sisters around the world grieved along side us on the 9/11 attacks.

I can assure you that good people all around the world stood with America that day. We watched with very similar disbelief, shock and grief. I’m British, but 9/11 is engraved in my mind forever. I was 17 at the time learning the structure of the human heart in biology class when the first plane hit. I knew nothing until my Mum came to pick me up and told me about it. We thought it was an accident. We got home and turned on the tv almost literally just in time to see the second plane hit. I realised then that it was no accident. Our allies were under attack. When the first tower fell I said to my parents and brother that soon the second would fall. But I wished it wouldn’t. I willed that building to stand, and I wondered how many people were like me, desperately wanting that building to defy the odds and stay standing. But.. it didn’t. I remember the sickly horror I felt at the the jumpers, but I respect them for choosing their way out. But even though it was the US that was attacked, it felt like an attack on us too. The US and UK are allies. It felt like an attack on the Western way of life. We felt anger, shock, disbelief and grief too. Everyone I knew around me from family to other students at college felt the same way. Even now I honour 9/11 in the week leading up by rewatching the documentaries and re-reading the events. Then on 9/11 I light a candle in mourning and respect for those who lost their lives that day. And a second one for all the heroes that day. From the firefighters, police and paramedics to the boat crews that worked all day to evacuate people from Manhattan, to those civilians whose stories I don’t know. I remember. I am British, but I never forget.

I've always said it is unfathomable to think of being in Bush's shoes that day. Beyond party lines or decisions afterwards, being in this role would have been hell on Earth. The trauma you would have to live with from the position of power. Your country is being attack, you're also target, figure it out. What a nightmare.

I remember that day from a different perspective. Firstly this was before phones where you could pull up info instantly. I was working that day so I heard over the radio as it happened almost like a pearl harbor type moment because those images were in my conscience through am radio. Its wasnt until I got home that night that I watched the images on tv. It was horrific to watch. Back to the phones. No calls out no calls in. The network was paralyzed until late that evening and the cellphone (albeit early phone and text) still dropped calls into the evening. Then living near an airport the following few days not a plane in the sky. It was eerie. I was amazed at how people came together and was proud to be Americans. They raised their flags half staff or the small ones put outside their front doors.

I'm currently training to be a pilot and when he's talking about those combat style maneuvers known as tactical takeoff/landings, believe me, he's not exaggerating. You think the Delta airlines planes pin you to the seat, you wouldn't believe what a 747 can do when well under max weight and the pilots job is to get it up and down fast.

it's always an interesting perspective to hear from when you hear things from people that were actually involved with the president when all this was going on. I remember when it happened I was in a 7th grade history class, just walking in the door getting ready to start when the teacher had the TV on. One of the first things I heard on TV was... oh my god it's falling down! I thought it was weird how the teacher had the TV on at that time anyway, because it was one of those things that just never happened. The rest of the day just had an eerie feel to it. All the teachers had their TVs on in their classrooms, and nobody really understood the full gravity of the situation until later on.

It was a horrible day. That said, our retaliation was disproportionate to the attack. We rolled over Afghanistan and killed tons of non-combatants just to find one man. Then forcefully overthrew their government and occupied their country for 18 years. There is a difference between paybacks and outright slaughter

And then Bush declared war on Iraq . Huge mistake the terrorist were from Saudi Arabia. Our country would be a lot stronger and better off if we would have stayed home and shored up our borders. Bring our military home and have them patrol our borders. They tell me Christians in Iraq had more freedom before the U.S. declared war on them. And stop the foreign students. No more work visas. If they want to come here and learn they can apply for citizenship. I would be in favor of speeding up the process of foreigners coming to the U.S.
