This type of video is what got me into tiling window managers and really made me fall in love with Linux. Keep up the great work brother! 💪😎

Nice video. I keep DWM and I3-gaps both on my Arco system. I started using using I3 more since your video about Bumblebee-status. Also, I installed auto-tiling on I3 and I get all the dynamic tiling functionality that I need. You have a very informative channel, I'm glad to see how much it has grown lately, well deserved.

You can use the autotiling script from nwg-piotr and get the dynamic tiling functionality in i3 and sway

I tried i3 and dwm, end up installing dwm on a cli debian. I keep it stock abd It took me 15mins to figure out a good work flow with dwm, a few keyboard shortcuts is all I needed. Now I keep workspaces, 1 and 2 for cl, 3-9 for individual gui apps. Oh also this setup, its on Termux @android tablet. It just feels so pleasant, considering I can use gimp and code on a 250 dollar tablet.

i3 is going to be better for new users because you'll get more support from a larger user base + better documentation, and the config is user friendly. Dwm out of the box doesn't give much functionality so you're gonna have to learn how to patch to get something working to your liking (and you prob won't know what you like/don't like yet as a new user). That said, in general dynamic tilers seem simpler because there's going to be less to think about and fewer key-bindings to remember. Manual tilers seem more geared toward advanced users, but really comes down to personal preference at the end of the day.

I used dwn and then i3. I have used extensive customization in both. I would chose i3 everyday all day.

I tried i3 and its a mature product. But I don't like its manual tiling, I wanted a dynamic one. But Qtile won my heart as a Python written and configured system, plus all its out of the box layouts with different behaviors and logic. I use the monadtall layout/logic now. Speaking of Xmonad. Its really good system too, but I did not like Haskell configuration. I may try DWM someday, but for now Qtile is good enough for me, especially because of Python.

I couldn't get my head around haskell either. Honestly, Python still gives me headaches.

Cool topic. BSPWM is pretty sweet. I like that BSPWM is JUST a window manager and you have to add a bar and key binding program (i.e. sxhkd). That's what you call minimal. DWM brags about being minimal but it comes with a bar and key bindings. To ME, I think the suckless folks are way too narrow minded almost like a cult. I use SpectrWM on a low spec machine but I also use Plasma on my beast of a machine. Gnome sucks because of the politics....those guys are weird ah.

I have tried to rice dwm applying alpha patch on top of system tray patch. dwm compiled with no issues but I could not start dwm with system tray flag enabled. So ricing dwm isn't really an easy task. So i sticked to the minimum patched dwm to get essential functionality. I3 manual tiling in vertical mode only is really inconvenient. Dwindle, monad, spiral automatic tiling layouts are not available in i3, or I'm no aware of.
@TheLinuxCast

The alpha patch is broken. I just use picom to handle all opacity.

I use 2018 version of dwm6.2 and it does work. U may try that version also. Of course your preapplied dwm version may clash with alpha patch I am specified

Picom causes foreground being transparent. Doesn't it?
@TheLinuxCast
@TheLinuxCast 3 жыл бұрын
@@Robertass2000 Picom can be configured to pretty much make anything transparent. Bars, windows, whatever. As long as it has a class, it can be put in picom.conf as transparent.

You have done as much to _evangelizing_ Linux to a new user as much as anyone. What you do has given linux a human face, rather than some nerd typing away in his terminal and showing off his skills

I can see that if they go by the documentation of DWM. I definitely should have covered that in the vid, because i3 has way better docs than any of suckless' stuff.

Qtile is great, but for noobs I don't think it's the best. Though I think it's better than awesome. Maybe I just haven't been around it enough (just one day so far), but I couldn't get my head around lua at all.

@@TheLinuxCast Agreed. I wouldn't recommend Qtile to beginners. It does not handle errors well. That is one big plus for i3, against Qtile. Edit: Also I have a big complain about the documentation to Qtile, which is *not* very well done.
@TheLinuxCast
@TheLinuxCast 3 жыл бұрын
@@thingsiplay The error thing is better in qtile than it used to be. Now there's a big shutdown button at the bottom, so you can at least quit out of it.
@thingsiplay

@@TheLinuxCast Yes, but once you restart in place with a defunctional (is that even a word?) configuration, then you lose the ability to do anything and have to wait before getting control back. Here a quick tip for any Qtile beginner: Run your config file with Python3, to see if there is a problem with it before restarting Qtile in place. I still think this should be done automatically by Qtile itself. Edit: I forgot to add the command to show what I am talking exactly. Running the config.py will just show errors, if any otherwise nothing happens. python3 ~/.config/qtile/config.py
