Adele feels like the relationship is fake. She’s unable to continue a superficial relationship with this person any longer because of the pain it’s causing her. The pain causes drifting, and the farther they drift there becomes only one way down: crash landing. The constant lying-personified by darkness-have pushed them farther and farther apart to the point where there is no hope for them anymore. Adele feel’s as if there’s no return from the dark place they’re in. When people start to drift, you start to lose touch with them and stop truly knowing them. She realizes that she is no longer the same person she was when this relationship first began; she has matured. They’ve lost touch with each other, making a lot of space between them: mentally and physically. Adele now understands through experience that loving someone in the dark is just delaying the inevitable heartbreak. She know’s its time to move on as she doesn’t want to endure or inflict any more suffering then she already has with her own darkness.
