As a church choir boy for years, I can attest--the power of a chorus is that it doesn't matter how YOU might feel about your singing ability. People aren't going to hear you. They're going to hear ALL of you. The choir holds each other up. And when you get that harmony, that just-so timed power of hundreds of voices singing in unison, there is nothing else humanity has ever invented that sounds as powerful.

I went on a cruise a long time ago as a kid during the middle of the school year, so there were only about 7 teens in total on a cruise full of people. We all became really fast friends despite our different backgrounds. We got up to all sorts of trouble in the 7 days the cruise went for, so much that the staff would just smile and shake their heads and let us do whatever it was we were scheming. There was one kid who took a ukelele with him everywhere and oftentimes we'd all sing sea shanties together since some of the kids were really into assassins creed. This was one of the main songs we sung and I always remember how hard it hit us singing it on the last day of the cruise when we knew we'd probably never see each other again. To this day I dont think ill ever have such a great group of friends and its bittersweet remembering the time spent on the boat. But at the end of the day it was time for us to leave her and go our separate ways. Very awesome project. I loved seeing how diverse the singers were from all ages and different walks of life. It reminded me a lot of my old friends and brought back fond memories, thank you ♥

@@Nessixify there are different sign languages, but none of them translate directly word-for-word into spoken language very well--the grammar and structure is very different. So, especially for music and poetry, people aren't looking up each individual word and replacing it with a synonymous sign, but rather finding an interpretation they feel captures the spirit and meaning of the original, also taking into account rhythm and musicality. I was part of a security detail in 2013 for a ship off the Ivory Coast. Nothing was more depressing than getting stuck on a ship thousands of miles away from home with guns and ammo. But after getting comfortable with the crew. Best time of my life. Getting told your purpose is to sit on a ship with a rifle hoping for pirates to try to board sucks. Your CO in your ear, telling you “if we stop anything on this job we all walk away with money “ isn’t fun. I wasn’t military, I was an employee of a contracting/bounty hunting firm. But once you meet these life long sea men, it changes everything. The fun these guys have on their off time was unrivaled.

She took every bit of the 8 hour pounding and didn't even spring a leak. I sold her a year later and it was not until after she had gone that it hit me. I genuine grief - that little boat had kept me alive when the weather turned bad. @@aqswd6825They could be partially deaf, which would allow them to hear a bit, but it's still considered being deaf. They could have a cochlear implant which is a device that can allow them to hear. They can still see, so they could have captions on and still enjoy the song. A few of my friends are deaf and one of the coolest things I've seen is they hooked up a subwoofer so they could play music and feel the vibrations from the beat as they watch music videos.

From a sailor (me): This is a quite an accurate portrayal of how sailors view their job as there's a love/hate relationship with sailing. On one hand there's the beauty of being at sea and travelling to new places but on the other hand theres a disdain for the long stints at sea. the bad food and the sadness of leaving loved ones behind. it's an old song but still rings true for those at sea.

As a sailor myself and someone who holds the sea in high regard, I have heard many a rendition of this song by professionals. Yet nothing came close to the sound of this by a ships crew. I first saw this video in my feed when they made it and was worried it would be mistreated by people looking for 5 minutes of fame. I can safely say, after listening to it now, well over 100 times in the last two years, not only was the shanty treated with the grace and respect it deserves. But I have never felt so close to the sea when at my home upon land as I do listening to this beautiful rendition of "Leave Her Johnny." And the emotions here feel so much like the parting of a crew. Even after so long. Well done to everyone involved, and thank you specifically to the "Longest Johns" one lead shanty man is all this shanty needs. @Kordon C. have you ever read the lyrics? It's basically the constitution for C.H.A.Z. No government, no house, no car, no art, no countries, no planning ahead, no morals, no hope for peaceful afterlife, nothing. Just nihilistic dreary existence pretending everything's better. All that wrapped up in a slow beat and a pretentious tone makes for a perfect symphony of ass.
@thewarden13983 жыл бұрын
@Kordon C. first of all, I'm as small government as a man can be, and even I recognize the need for at least a basic form of law and rights enforcement. Remove that, and immediately its Darwinism and survival of the fittest. People simply brutalize each other as we please. Anyone who thinks that's a system where they'd thrive is precisely the kind of person who's first on the meat wagon. Remember, this song isn't advocating government reform, but the permanent abolition of it. Secondly, "Imagine no possessions". Seems pretty clear to me. Kiss your car, your land, your house, your toaster oven, all of it, good bye. It's all community owned, so when someone squats in your living room or drives off in your hellcat there's nothing you can do about it. Thirdly "Imagine no religion". I think one can disagree on the existence of God and an afterlife and point out the numerous flaws and questions about the subject. The problem is that a society without morals is a dead one. There has to be a common set of basic rules by which everyone abides peaceably and that our laws are derived from. And those rules must have an unassailable anchor point. Otherwise, you have fractious groups of people simply running around doing what feels good. What feels good for one man might be charity while what feels good for another might be rape. Without that anchorpoint, whos to say the rapist is wrong? Not science, which asserts that the male is doing the natural thing by attempting to spread his genes as far as possible. Not the social majority, which until relatively recently was perfectly comfortable with such things like slavery and child labor. All this to say that if you can find at least as good an anchorpoint, please let me know, but until then it seems pretty inadvisable to unmoor ourselves from the first one. And the current trendy replacement for God, Nihilism, seems a pretty poor substitute. Read the essay "The Madman" by its founder, Friedrich Nietzsche. Even he recognized its ultimately disastrous ends. Fourthly, the reason I call it pretentious and trite is that in the music video hes sitting at his grand piano in his expansive home on his sprawling estate swimming in money whilst simultaneously singing how everyone else should give away their shit. And any musically attuned ear will tell you that that "melody" is simplistic to the point of insult, and personally, I happily saddle it with the blame for the scourge of pop and rap music under which we labor today.

@@jameskovar for people who are simply mute there is no purpose, but sign language is mainly used by the deaf community and as someone who can hear we tend to forget that they can't actually hear the songs we know and love. The use of sign language in song is giving them a chance to "hear" it themselves. And while in this case it's usefulness is slightly redundant because of the way they edited the video, by still including sign it shows that we are including others as well. Considering that this is a community collaboration it makes sense that they have included Sign language because the people who rely on it are also part of the community (Sea shanties are also about community even if said community is just the sailors on one ship...)

Thank you so much for this!! I’m using this in my dnd campaign for a very quiet sad moment. My players failed to save a group of “pirates” in time during their huge quest and they’re sitting in the main ale house in the thief city by the sea and a brother of one of those who died is the one who begins to sing. The entire bar sings in unison somberly to remember the sailors. I intend on making my players tear up lol

Now THATS good DM-ing. Thats simply genius. How did they take it?
@benester4225 Жыл бұрын
@@JapetoYT I try lol. They actually got really upset which was intended but what I didn’t think would happen was that they became super bloodthirsty. The reason the group of npc’s died is bc they were attacked at sea by an enemy type we made up called Hobgoblins. They are really dangerous in large numbers. One of my players stood up after the song and asked the ale house who would go with them to Twilight Island where the hobgoblins make base and wipe them out. So I basically had to make a dungeon on the fly, but thankfully I still had some unused ship combat maps and some puzzle rooms for once they were on land

This song really, really hit me. The day it was released was the day I was preparing to pack up and leave my life as I’d known it for the past 22 years of my life behind. I moved across the country, left everything and everyone I’d ever known behind. And though it was incredibly hard, it was in my best interest because what I was so desperately clinging to for the comfort of familiarity wasn’t good for me. Coming back to this after I’ve done so for a reminder that I’ve made the right choice. Thank you longest Johns, I’ve been a fan of yours for about a year and am so glad to see you getting the recognition you absolutely deserve.

Imagine you was a captain of an old ship. You've been sailing with her for as long as you can remember. You remember the joy you had, all of the hardship you have to endure as you sail the treacherous ocean with her and your crew. But at one point in your life, you've become too old to sail and your beloved ship is too old and too broken to set sail. There are a lot of patch on her hull and her sail. One of the mast are just outright broken. The rudder are just not responsive anymore. Your adventurous spirit are still burning ever brightly, but it's time to say goodbye to your old ship, and even with all of the money you've amassed through your entire life, you can't ever hope to fix her. You refuse to let go, but your first mate was right, it's time to leave her for your voyage has finally reached its end. As you sail for one last time to the harbor, this was the last song you sing with your crew as you remembered everything you've went through with your ship and your crew.
