Lyrics:
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
For the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came riding from the south side slowly lookin' all around
He's an outlaw loose and running, came the whisper from each lip
And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
He was vicious and a killer though a youth of 24
And the notches on his pistol numbered one and 19 more
One and 19 more
Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around
Was an Arizona ranger, wouldn't be too long in town
He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead
And he said it didn't matter he was after Texas Red
After Texas Red
Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red
But the outlaw didn't worry men that tried before were dead
20 men had tried to take him, 20 men had made a slip
21 would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
Well the morning passed so quickly, it was time for them to meet
It was 20 past 11 when they walked out in the street
Folks were watching from the windows, everybody held their breath
They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death
About to meet his death
There was 40 feet between them when they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather 'fore a bullet fairly ripped
And the ranger's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh, he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
Big iron, big iron
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

@@fionasabreNooo... But I know about "The Valley of the Sun!" other wise know as THE PHOENIX METROPOLITAN AREA!!! Why is this relevant? Well, did you know that there really is a town called Agua Fria, Arizona? I didn't until hearing this song. And do you know where that song is located? In the Phoenix Metropolitan Area... Next to Sun City, Youngtown, El Mirage... And reasonably close to, oh, I don't know. Phoenix Arizona! Yeah, My home town. the place I lived MOST of my life. (I really need to get out more and do some traveling.) Except that Phoenix isn't IN the Mojave Desert. It's in The Sonoran Desert. Want to know a big clue? You know all those big cacti with the upraised arm like they've participated in one too many KZbin comment sections and just given up? The Saguaro? Yeah, you don't find those in the Mojave. You only find them in the Sonora: Arizona, New Mexico, and the Mexican State of Sonora.

@@Mildcat743 Personally, I think it sounds a bit like an older resident of Agua Frea recounting the tale to the young'uns. A man who's old enough to realize that what happened that day wasn't good-Texas Red may have been vicious and a killer, but he was only a youth of twenty-four. He hadn't yet hit his thirties, yet he'd already made the choices that led to his untimely and tragic demise. Hell, it could be Red's father or his brother still mourning Red's loss despite everything.

The original really makes you feel the enormity and finality of taking a life, like the singer saw the shooting and is still traumatized by it. This version sounds more relaxed, like the singer's son or grandson is singing it as a way of honoring his ancestors and their way of life.

On top of being a wonderful tune, this song is also a brilliantly constructed story. It doesn't simply describe a gunfight, it takes its time building the mythos of each of the participants. It finely details both their skill and willingness to kill, and painting both participants as being so skilled and with a strong reputation makes the encounter more gripping. Not only that, but it also creates a beautifully executed tension. Notice how, although the song clearly respects both of its main characters, it bets *against* the ranger in its language. It understates, but doesn't under*estimate*, the skill of the ranger, but commits lines to the viciousness and body count of Texas Red. It also condemns the Ranger to be the 21st notch on Red's gun. You can even tell that the locals of Agua Fria had lived under the shadow of the unkillable Texas Red for so long that they had no hope that the Ranger would ever match him, to the point that they prematurely mourn him. This seeding of tension is part of what makes the payoff so satisfying. The other part is how the latter half of the song seems to be narrating the standoff in real time. It does a great deal to convince the audience of the swiftness of the Ranger by spending very few words on the actual gunfight, snapping quickly to the aftermath, as if everything happened too fast to even be described. Stories told in song are so wonderful when done carefully and with the elegance that this song was. Others that come to mind are "If It Means a Lot to You" by A Day To Remember, or "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" by Gorillaz.

The 4 th verse is just so good about being after an outlaw & he was going to take him in alive or maybe dead & that it didn’t matter. Now that’s badass !

The fact that it specifically tells the story of an Arizona Ranger makes it all the more appropriate for the Fallout game that most obviously draws from the Wasteland series. Another fantastic design choice by Obsidian.

As a Bitish fan of country music, cowboy ballads, and old time folk music from the old and new worlds in general, I can honestly say I love the shanty harmonies on this song! Well done lads and keep up the good work. By the way, check out The Sons of the Pioneers if you fancy trying some more cowboy ballads, they pretty much founded "Western" music.
