Indians React to European Reacts to Her FIRST American RODEO

I directed an animal hospital for a number of years so I get how people project themselves into what they believe the animals are experiencing. I've been to many rodeos and there are a number of things I'd like to clarify. First, rodeo animals are respected and well treated. Although the rodeo events may appear as being harmful to the animals, I can assure you the humans are taking MUCH greater risks and experience a much greater degree of pain and injury than the animals do. It's very unusual for a rodeo animal to experience a serious injury, unlike horse racing where the horses are bred for speed rather than durability so experience serious injuries that necessitate them being euthanized, which is truly sad. Nonetheless, rodeos are rooted in the livestock culture, i.e., where animals were a mean of support and income, and the rodeo events mirror the skills cowboys and cowgirls had to master to make a living. For me, these cowboys and cowgirls represent what America is all about, and I have a great deal of respect for them.

Very well said! You can punch a horse or cow as hard as you can and it won’t phase it. Ever see horses play in the pasture? They are pretty rough playing horsey games and injure each other. I’ve had my mare horse bitten or kicked when someone put a their gelding horse in the pasture unwittingly.

Some animals even seem to enjoy it too, I've been to a couple rodeos where the bull genuinely seemed like it was having a ton of fun trying to buck people off, it was always itching for the gate to open and practically walked back to the pen on its own.

The roping event where the guy tied up the calf is a display of catching and tying the calf for branding. Rodeos started as competitions between ranches to show off their cowboy's skills.

The idea is to basically hang on for 8 seconds and then dismount without hitting the ground, this sport revolves around common ranching tasks such as getting young horse used to being ridden, catching calves and so on.

calf roping is not just a game, it is a skill to do it quickly and safely for both the cowboy and the calf. If you have to inoculate 50 calves spread out over a large area, you have to be very fast to get the work done in a reasonable time.

99% of everything they do at a rodeo is to be a better cowboy and rancher. When they're catching that calf, it's like them being out on the prairie and they need to get him back. They roll them and tie them up and put them back on there. saddle and carry them back. Everything has a purpose. It's why they start young. Keep up the great work

Forty-two years ago, I took my wife to a rodeo her second month in the United States. Being Japanese, I took her to a Sushi restaurant near the stadium before the event. Much to our surprise, the restaurant was packed with cowboys and cowgirls eating sushi before the rodeo. The TV and movie Westerns are loved around the World. My wife loved this unique American culture. One of the things she wanted to do this Summer was to go to the rodeo, unfortunately she passed away before we could do that.

Having grown up in rural areas of Kansas, I saw a lot of rodeos growing up, so her video of being at one for the first time is honestly one of my favorite videos on KZbin lol. Her reaction to the bull riding still makes me laugh.

By the time you get to the rodeo, any rodeo, you have worked your horse for months and most of the time, years, to Compete. We are a rodeo family in Oklahoma. I’m rodeoing with my grandkids now.

With the bull riding, the horns are the least of their worries or concerns. The feet are what is to be feared. To be trampled is the thing that can cause the most serious injuries. The flak jacket is worn to help guard against serious injury. And the break in activity was indeed a prayer - followed by the national anthem.

I have a cousin in Cheyenne that is/was a Rodeo "Princess"( according to her brothers). She is a barrel racing(?) champion. Her boys are now competing. She still goes out so he shows them how it's done. Lol She has some gorgeous horses! I think she's been competing for around 20 years.

Calves are allowed to freely roam the pastureland. They need to be captured and restrained so they can be cared for, mainly so they don't hurt themselves trying to escape during the procedure.

Exactly. They are gonna get roped and tied down for a few minutes while they give vaccines, hoof care, ear tagging or freeze branding, castration, depolling/horns trimmed, dewormer, etc. then they get to roam the pasture for half the year untouched

The purpose of roping and calf tying is for vaccines and other medical treatment or hoof care. Kind of hard to do some procedures unless you have the cow tied on it’s side. And once you have a cow down you have to work fast to minimize the time it’s tied.

When I was a kid growing up in the mountains of northern California, the rodeo at the Trinity County fair was always the biggest event of the year! When I was little, I wanted to do mutton-busting, but my mom wouldn't let me. Still, my favorite event was always the team roping. I always loved watching the header and the healer work together! Such great memories! 😁

I hate seeing the roping too but they need it to be able to catch them for the doctor, to get their checkups and all kinds of stuff like that or if there is some trouble. It doesn't happen to them very often fortunely. I still can't look tho but I also can't kill ants because I feel bad for them so I'm not the right person to give an opinion but I do see the need. If there is a cow in a herd that they have to get separated from the herd for any reason I guess there are few options. I do know they tie up the legs like that so that the cow doesn't hurt itself trying to get free. So immobilizing them as quickly as possible is the safest option.

Great response! You summed it up very well. The might get roped and tied on the ground for 5 minutes once every 6 months or longer for medical procedures like deworming. Yes it looks rough but these animals are very strong and can kill you with one kick. So as a rancher if you have a sick animal that can infect the rest of your herd(business) what are you gonna do?

I live in Texas and I love going to the Rodeo. Its sooo fun to see the kids along with the adult men and women doing what they do. Of course there is competion, but the biggest competition is simply to stay mounted on the bucking horses and bulls. If I had to choose a favorite event, it would be women's barrel racing. Man it's so exciting and those girls can flat out ride a galloping horse! Whew!

The amount of videos that she made being openly and blatantly disrespectful of other people's space and property is kind of gross... And most of her complaints about her time in the US had to do with her being upset that people didn't change what they usually do to accommodate her. It all starts with geography. East of the Mississippi cattle can thrive in fairly small pastures; because east of the Mississippi there's plenty of water.. In much of the West there's not much water so cattle have to range widely to find enough to eat, Therefore they have to be collected when they're taken to market and doing that, as well as just looking after the herd, meant that cowboys had to operate on horseback (you can travel on foot out west but in a lot of places you'll die of thirst before you get anywhere). So roping, riding, and just staying on your horse were job requirements. Rodeo events showcase those skills. You might notice that during the horse riding there are men standing by on horseback, while during the bull riding there are men on horseback but also men on foot. They're there to distract the bull and to pull the rider clear when (not if) he gets thrown. You might also notice that during the trick riding the horses hold to a steady course, and while Eva is talking to the cowboys and cowgirls, their horses don't move around or fidget at all. During the team-roping, as soon as the cowboy dismounts his horse comes to a dead stop. These are working animals and they know and do exactly what's expected of them.

Good thing she left that hat behind. That wasn’t a cowboy hat. I’m a 66 yr old woman. We have 400 head of cattle and use our roping (cowboy) skills often to doctor a sick cow or help them deliver their calves. The rodeo is for fun and using our skills. Riding sheep is pretty tame for the kids and fun to watch.

The animals used in rodeos are pretty much pros. There is a strap placed around the flank of the horses and the bulls to make them buck. Once the rider comes off and the strap comes off the animal just looks for the gate to get out of the arena. Some animals are prized more than others to be ridden. They are known to be better buckers and your score will be higher if you ride it.

Like someone else said, for the bronc and bull riding, the rider has to stay on for 8 seconds for the ride to qualify. Qualifying rides are judged on how well the animal jumped and moved, and how well the rider rode his animal. Calf roping and barrel racing are timed events.

Even though I was born in the U.S., I also had the dream of seeing a real rodeo with real cowboys. I did go to one in San Francisco. It was too much to see the animal roping there, for me too. There’s a big event in Alberta Canada called the Calgary Stampede. That’s a huge annual event, if you want to see a lot of rodeo culture.

Tying the calves legs comes from the days of branding cattle with an iron. They tied the legs so they can brand them.

Most restaurant fries and package chips are made with a special varieties of potato that are both low water and low sugar. The low sugar prevents them from browning too quickly. This stand apparently used Russset potatoes which are low moisture but not low sugar, that is why they were so much more brown that you might have seen before. Low water potatoes are often referred to as starchy and those with a higher water content are called waxy. The low sugar variety that might be most available to home cooks in the U.S. would be Kennebek.

If anything, I think you guys need to see a thing called "mutton busting". Basically kids up to six years old are riding a sheep wearing helmet and a protective vest. Sounds crazy but then again, I don't see many pictures from India that show kids doing it. I think I saw kids riding the back of cows here and there growing up but never kids on sheep.

The animals in these events are not hurt. The different activities are actually a reflection of the life of someone who has cattle herds or needs to break in a wild horse. The roping of the calf is something they have to do each year when they go out into the open fields and have to capture those new calves that were born each year, give them necessary inoculations, tag them or brand them and check them for any disease. It looks harmful, but it actually is not. Animals that perform in rodeos and especially those who are in the professional circuit are treated extremely well. They are fed well, groomed and are very healthy animals. Trust me, the people are more in danger of getting hurt than the animals are.

One thing to understand about roping calves is that it's not about hurting the animal or killing the animal it's about making sure that you tie the animal up so that you can give them the correct vaccinations or ear tags so that when they're roaming free in the pasture land they're not susceptible to disease and if they get away you can get them back. It's kind of similar to the way that they put babies in a tube to give them x-rays so that they'll stay still it doesn't harm the baby, it's just necessary for them to be able to do the medical procedure and make sure that they're okay. It doesnt hurt them, it's just uncomfortable for a little while and is for safety on the ranch.

A good bucking horse or bull is extremely valuable, so they are not abused in any way. They buck, because there is a strap around their testicles. It irritates them, but doesn'tdamage them in any way. After the rider jumps or is thrown off, the other riders in the arena ride up next to the animals and hit the quick-release catch so they settle down enough to herd back into the staging area.

The flank strap goes around their flank (the ticklish part of the belly in front of the hip. They buck naturally but it induces more leg extension and a better ride. It doesn't matter if a horse is gelded and lacks testes, he'll still buck the same

I understand that cultural appropriation is a big issue (especially in America), but white people don't care if you do it to them. It doesn't matter if you've been in the country for three seconds, you can wear the cowboy hat wherever and whenever you want. It's not a religious or exclusively cultural hat. You can wear it no matter where you come from, no matter what your race is, you can wear it. We see it as influence, not appropriation. Which I personally think is a better outlook on things like this. Yes, if it's an item specifically used for a purpose and you're not using it that way, or if you're using something as a costume, that's bad. Anything else, I would say is influence and not appropriation. And even in the case of a costume, if one of my Indian neighbors brought their kid around at Halloween dressed as a cowboy/cowgirl, I would not be offended. I would only say how cute they look, give them candy, and wave to the parents. Now, if you're wearing them in the cities (specifically in the Northeast), you might get some funny looks, but even there no one will confront you about not being allowed to wear that hat because you're not part of that culture.

One part that she jumped over, or the video editing did, was when everyone got quiet and she wondered what was goin on. The people were praying. It's an important part of the opening ceremony because Americans are still, especially in the "heartland" of America, a very religious people. During that prayer, lead by a respected member of the community's clergy, everyone is asking God to protect the riders and give His blessing to the entire rodeo. Many public events and meetings in America are opened with prayer. Normally a non-sectarian prayer to the God of the Bible. I am a member of Toastmasters International, a community service organization that teaches people to overcome their fear of public speaking, and for the 44 years of our club's existence, every meeting has been opened with prayer. Than the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. I'm not sure how many other countries in the world do that, even though I've lived outside the U.S. off and on for approximately ten years. In this rodeo, she doesn't record them saying the Pledge, but the very next thing they do after praying is sing of the Star Spangled Banner, the American National Anthem, which is also extremely important to Americans. Americans' faith in God is usually very quiet and hidden. Yet its traditions are so deep that many credit that faith for Americans' optimistic attitude. We believe God will more than likely bless us in our efforts if we are honest and diligent. But we are also a bit self-deprecating about our faith, as well. There is a famous saying among Americans, that "God watches over Fool, Drunks, and the United States of America!" It's hard to say that and be 100% arrogant!

The Canadians have one of the biggest in Calgary every year but its basically just found in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba I believe. But yes it comes from the ranches of Northern Mexico, New Mexico and Texas who invented the sport by competing against each other in the skills a ranch hand needs.

There is no typical Ametican guy. Admittedly we're less than a quarter the population of India, but we're spread over more than three times the area. With a huge ethnic diversity. So its really impossible to quantify universal traits... or sometimes even common ones. Climate, race, religion, most popular sport, average education level, core beliefs on social issues, etc. all vary widely. Rodeos, as one example, isnt even a "thing" in most of the US. Its stereotypically "American" mostly because of the Cowboy legends, and Western movies. Similarly, I know India isnt one thing, although you do have less ethnic diversity. But even within a population who are all ethnically closer, you've got huge divergence in beliefs and culture. The same is true in the US... maybe agressively so because of that diversity. To be honest, I'd be just as befuddled by parents letting 12 year olds ride bucking broncos, bulls, or even sheep, as Eva was in her video. But I'm not from Montana.

I don’t get hurting animals for entertainment. They buck because they are in pain. And then they’ll tell you how well the animals are treated, they aren’t. I hope the animals hurt the humans. It’s just showing off torturing animals. 😢

They are not in pain anymore than a horse with a rider is in pain or a human giving piggy back is. They buck instinctively because in nature if some animal is on your back and it's not a member of your own species its probably a lion, leopard, or tiger. If we assume that animals and humans are of equal value then you are saying that if someone scares or annoys someone else then they deserve injury, mutilation or even death.
